Paraguay is a country which many travelers skip because of the lack of big sights. Exactly this made me curious and so I went to checkout if it is really that boring and got to experience so many cool things: from the old town in Asuncion, a football match in the national stadium and the beach in Encarnacion over to the Jesuit Ruins of Trinidad I could explore this country in a really relaxed way and totally off the beaten tourist routes.

The tranquility and the lovely people of Paraguay alone are a great reason to check it out - another is the Terere, a cold version of the Maté which is the national drink here. The lack of tourism creates avery own charm traveling through Paraguay and turns it into a very special experience in Latin America!

Things to do in Paraguay featured in this episode:
- old town of Asunción, the capital of Paraguay
- preparing and drinking Tereré, the national drink of Paraguay
- watching a football match in the national stadium of Asunción (Cerro Porteño vs Santa Fe)
- the beach in Encarnación
- Jesuit ruins near Trinidad
- Jesuti ruins Jesus de Tavarangue

Encarnacion Paraguay city walk tour ????????

Welcome to the travel adventures of Mister abroad. In the previous episode we toured through Asuncion, the historic center and the modern villa morra neighborhood.
This time let's discover the small city of Encarnacion. It's the Paraguayan destination for leisure beach time along the Parana river as well as the annual Carnaval parade.

The similiarties between Encarnacion and Asuncion are the driving and the daytime closures of many restaurants. There's one supermarket in centro so it's difficult to eat if you don't cook at home.
What's different here are the people which are friendlier and more inviting.

Hotels and airbnbs are really limited in Encarnacion so it's best to reserve early.

The nightlife in Encarnacion is very also very limited with just one nightclub by the beach and a few bars in the center. In the next episode we will walk through la costanera, the country's most popular beach.

This is a travel channel about life, culture, languages and seeking paradise. Experience local cultures and learn languages to see different perspectives.

Main Destinations

Outisde Asuncion

San Bernardino- (45 minutes)Paraguay´s liveliest balneario, a summer destination for the young and beautiful. Originally settled by German immigrants, you can still see some houses remaining from that period. The Lago Ypacarai used to be known as the blue lake, is no longer blue, but filled with people doing water sports during December-February.

Aregua- (45 minutes) laid back town with a nice church and lake. Home to many artists and writers, which have set up nice galleries and museums. Outdoor street market selling colorful ceramics. You can visit the Museo del Mueble, Centro Cultural del Lago and El Cantaro Galería de Arte.

San Lorenzo (30 minutes) Museo Etnografico Guido Bogiani- indigenous wood carvings and feather pieces. Nice and cheap store selling indigenous handicrafts. Call before going. Located in nearby San Lorenzo, be sure to take a taxi driver who knows the place, as most people in San Lorenzo do not even know of its existence.

Encarnación (4 hours) On the way, stop at ruins and churches along the Jesuit trail. Santa maria de fe is a small town where you can see women embroidering in a sisterhood community.

Pilar- (3,5 hours) riverside city where the countries biggest cotton manufacturing industry is located. Very relaxed atmosphere.

Nueva Australia- Settled by disgruntled and idealistic Australians in October, 1893. About 700 people set up a colony without money or bosses based on the theories of Karl Marx. The tiny town with some of the descendants of the original settlers still exists about 5km West of Villarrica. Villarrica is an interesting town with a square that comes alive on a Friday night. very cheap wares sold. A second town, again with descendants, was founded by the same group of Australians at Cosme, 90km South, near Ca azapa.

Itaipu Dam, Asuncion, Hotel Tirol and Jesuit Missions - Encarnacion — Paraguay

After a incredible few days in Foz do Iguacu seeing the beautiful waterfalls we took a very educational tour around Itaipu Dam, the world's second largest hydro electric dam in the world! We learnt so many facts and it was a lot more interesting than we had imagined.

From here we headed on an overnight bus journey to Asuncion - the capital of Paraguay, where we mostly just lazed about, although we did visit a few museums and visit the zoo (which was a dodgy, poor standard zoo!).

After thoroughly lazing around we took another bus journey to Encarnacion which is a much nicer city, it has a new artificial beach, but the best bits are the jesuit mission tours and nature/wildlife trails around the Hotel Tirol and Jesús de Tavarangue

A Tourist's Guide to Asuncion, Paraguay

Part 6 of our South America Trip

We fly into Asuncion, captial of Paraguay.

Ruinas jesuiticas de Jesus de Tavarangue in Encarnacion, Paraguay

The Guaraní Jesuit mission of Jesus de Tavarangüé is one of the reductions that are still preserved, among many villages founded by Jesuit missionaries in the framework of their colonization work in South America in the seventeenth century. It is located in the department of Itapúa , Paraguay .

It was founded in 1685 on the banks of the River Monday by the Jesuit Gerónimo Delfín, although the settlement had to move several times because of the hostility of the Brazilians who attacked and carried them as slaves, until reaching what is now 38 km from the city of Incarnation . It had about 3000 inhabitants by 1750 .

In this mission one of the largest churches of the time began to be built, which had to be left unfinished by the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768 by Carlos III of Spain .

The ruins of these religious missions reflect a way of life and education marked by a unique style. It was rediscovered almost two centuries later, declaring a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993 .

This temple would be a replica of the Loyola Church, located in Italy . The architectural design of this reduction was in charge of the architect Antonio Forcada, of Spanish origin, who imposed his own style with trilobed arches characteristic of Muslim culture that at that time predominated in Spain.

The Jesuit Route is a circuit that recreates the passage of the Society of Jesus through our lands, who formed, together with the natives of the place, populations nestled in the middle of the South American jungles, which surpassed the rest of the colony in art and culture.

Although the foundations were more than 50, only 30 were the towns that managed to consolidate, 8 of which are in the territory of Paraguay and are: San Ignacio Guazú, Santa María de Fe, Santa Rosa, Santiago, San Cosme and San Damián , Itapúa (the current city of Encarnación), Santísima Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangué.
