17:22 - Conclusion

Hey guys, today we are going to look at the mysterious Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia, which has many strange secrets hidden inside. Historians say it was built about 900 years ago with simple tools , but by the end of this video, I think you will agree with me that this is not true at all.
You may have already known that this is the largest religious monument in the world, but how big is this temple? The temple stretches more than 400 acres, that is more than three times the size of the entire Vatican city, or about 300 times the size of an American football field. So you can imagine the size of this temple. Even if we take out all the walking space and empty land, the sheer area covered by stone blocks is at least 10 Million Square Feet. And we are not looking at just a 2 dimensional ground area, we have to look at the volume in 3D because it is made of layers and layers of stone blocks, pillars, ceiling, and towers. The Iconic central towers in the middle, which almost look like drill bits, they are still the tallest structures in this city, even after all these years. The central tower is 213 feet tall, and this view is actually printed on the Flag of Cambodia.
So imagine what would be the sheer volume of rocks needed to build a temple which stretches for 10 million square feet and has a pyramidal height of more than 200 feet. If we calculate the weight of all the sandstone blocks which make up this pyramid, we get about 52 Million tons of rock. I have used a calculator to calculate this weight, using the density of sandstone. Now, we have already not included the rocks in the foundation, we have not included the millions of stone blocks going many feet deep in the moat, and the rocks placed around the moat. And that is already 52 Million tons of rock. Now what I am going to do is take only 20% of this number, so this way we know this is a very very conservative estimate, because Angkor Wat is not a true solid pyramid, there are lots of hollow spaces in between. Let us actually take even less than 20%, we will only take 10,000,000 tons. So this way we know at least this much of rocks would have been used to build the temple.
Okay, so why are we calculating the weight of the stone blocks in this temple? Because, archeologists and historians argue that the entire temple was built in just 37 years. You know the standard theory, people using chisels and hammers to build temples.
Now let us assume that these people worked from sunrise to sunset everyday for 37 years. So they worked straight for 12 hours with no breaks, they don't eat, they don't even blink, and no rainy days, no war, no festivals for 37 years. That is a total of 162,060 hours. So if you do the math, if you divide the amount of rocks by the number of hours, this is the answer we get, approximately 60 tons. This means that they would have to cut and place at least 60 tons of rock every hour. This is 1 Ton of rock every minute. So for every minute they have to measure, cut, carve, lift, place and align one ton of rock. This is simply IMPOSSIBLE. We cannot accomplish this even today, even with modern machinery, we have not yet developed the technology to cut, position and polish one ton of rock of every minute. That is more than 2000 pounds of rock every minute, or 1000 kilograms every minute.

What We WISH We’d Known BEFORE Visiting Angkor Wat [Sunrise Tour] ????????

In today's video, we embark on a journey to visit the iconic Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia. We had heard so much about the beauty of Angkor Wat at sunrise, so we decided to wake up early and experience it for ourselves. But what we discovered was not what we expected.

As we arrived at the temple, the sky was still dark, and we were surrounded by the sounds of nature. As the sun began to rise, we were amazed to see the temple slowly coming to life with the golden light of dawn. The intricate carvings and architecture of Angkor Wat were breathtaking, and we couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder.

But what surprised us the most was the number of visitors that had arrived to witness the sunrise. We had expected a peaceful and quiet experience, but instead, we were surrounded by a large crowd of tourists. However, despite the crowds, the magic of Angkor Wat at sunrise was not lost on us.

We also learned about the rich history of Angkor Wat, which was built in the 12th century as a Hindu temple and later converted to a Buddhist temple. The temple complex is vast, and it takes at least three days to fully explore all the temples, each with its unique charm and beauty.

Overall, we recommend getting a three-day pass to Angkor Wat to fully appreciate its splendor and history. Despite the crowds, witnessing Angkor Wat at sunrise was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we'll never forget. Join us on our journey to Angkor Wat and discover its magic for yourself!

05:44 - Lava Rocks behind Sandstone blocks
08:13 - Laterite Quarry
10:44 - Secret Ingredient
12:38 - Conclusion

Hey guys, today we are going to solve the puzzle of Angkor Wat's Stone Work. In a previous video, I had estimated that Angkor Wat would have needed at least 10 Million tons of sandstone blocks to build the temple. As you can see, Angkor Wat is entirely made of sandstone, and it is so big that it would have needed at least that many rocks. But there is a fundamental problem with this, if you look at the quarry sites of Angkor Wat, we can be sure that 10,000,000 tons of rocks were not removed from here. And experts confirm there are no other sandstone quarries nearby from which the rocks have been taken. So where did ancient builders magically get these sandstone blocks from? If you watch till the end of the video, you will know.
So that is where the tourists are, that is where the main temple is. This is almost the edge of the temple but this is where all information is. See this is sandstone, this is this rock basically. You can see the blocks that were used to make this temple. I don't think these were leftovers. These are parts taken out and put here. So you can see these blocks of sandstone - this is what the entire temple is made of. These are the sandstone blocks that made the temple and you can see a bunch of them here and there is a pile of blocks which goes all the way and this is all sandstone. These are sandstone blocks, parts of pillars, I can tell right away, some make up the other structures. But you see those rocks there, that is where it gets really interesting. Can you see the difference between that rock and this rock? This rock is sandstone but that is not sandstone. I think that is volcanic basalt, that's - Cambodians call this Lava Rock, you see how porous it is. Let us go take a look and see how this was used. See how these rocks are, right? You can tell right away that you cannot put these rocks as front pieces of a temple right? Because you see how porous they are and how rough they are. If they are carved, this is not going to look good. But why do you see these huge rectangular blocks right? You can see how many blocks here right? This entire area is full of these Lava Rocks. But these rocks were also used in the construction of the temple. Nobody understands this, people think it is made of sandstone but these rocks were key to the construction of the Angkor Wat temple. So let's go take a look and see where these were used.
We are on the other edge of the temple, you can see tourists and tour guides walking into the temple, but remember, the information is always in places where people do not look. So I start exploring the woods nearby, normal people do not venture into this area.
And you can see something very exciting, the Angkor Wat temple is not only protected by a moat, but it has a giant compound wall, not only now, even a thousand years ago, most people would not visit this area, but this giant temple is protected by a 16 foot wall on all 4 sides. But the most important feature is the material used here.
So this where the lava rocks were used. There is no need for dressing this up, there is no need for this compound wall to look beautiful, it was created for protective purposes, and this is why we have blocks and blocks of lava rocks. You can tell - it is not beautiful, but it will absolutely serve the purpose. And we are able to find this only if we go deep, where there is nobody.
This material is called basaltic laterite, and it is created as a result of volcanic eruption. I examine this wall which stretches for miles, and when I start returning back to the main premises, something hits me, this wall made of laterite does not solve the mystery of Angkor Wat's volume of rocks. This wall probably accounts for 1 percent of Angkor Wat's stone blocks. So, just because I found out that this 1% is made of laterite, it does not explain where 99% of the rocks, the sandstone blocks came from.

Angkor Wat, located in northwest Cambodia, is the largest religious structure in the form of a temple complex in the world by land area, measuring 162.6 hectares. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of four towers surrounding a central spire that rises to a height of 65 m above the ground.

360 video: Inside Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia

This iconic temple complex is an absolute must-see. Being the largest religious monument in the world, it is a wonderful showcase of grandeur.

Angkor Temple is the most stunning and the best-preserved temple in the complex. It was built at the end of the 12th century by the Khmer King Suryavarman II, probably as his funerary temple. The temple represents Mount Meru, which is a sacred mountain and the centre of all universes according to Hindu mythology.

The temple is considered to be the masterpiece of Khmer architecture as well as the centre of Khmer civilisation. It was also listed as a UNESCO monument in 1992. No wonder it became a national symbol and you can find it on the national flag of Cambodia.

You have to carry your ticket with you at all times because you will be checked upon entering every temple. Don't forget to dress respectfully. If you want to get around the whole complex, you are going to need to hire a vehicle - a bicycle, van or a tuk-tuk.
