???????? Athens Acropolis & Parthenon Walking Tour ????️ 4k Walking Tours [4k HD / 60fps]

This walking tour of Athens historic Acropolis was filmed on Wednesday November 5th, 2021 starting from the base of the hill. From the entry gate we walk up along the olive tree lined path overlooking the Odeum of Herodes Atticus. Beyond that is the Sanctuary of Asclepius as well as the Ancient Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus.

From there we will make our way up the Panathenaic Way into the Propyla (which is Greek for before and here applies to the entrance of the temple grounds).

The walk continues up as we pass under the Temple of Athena Nike. Passing through the Propyla we get our first glimpse of the Parthenon from the North West angle.

Before touring the monumental structure we will take a closer look at the ruins of the Older temple of Athena which lay in front of the exquisite Porch of the Karyatids. Moving towards the dynamic structure we walk around the Erechtheion.

Finally we make our way onto the main road and get the perfect angle of the Parthenon. The Parthenon is a former temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patroness. The Parthenon was the center of religious life in the powerful Greek City-State of Athens, the head of the Delian League. Built in the 5 century B.C., it was a symbol of the power, wealth and elevated culture of Athens.

=== Key notes from today's walk - turn on closed captions (CC) to read in realtime ===

Welcome to today’s walk! A few top tips for visiting before we get started -

1. Time your visit well - get there when it opens if you want to avoid the crowds or head there just before sunset as the sight is staggeringly beautiful - though just be aware you’ll be sharing it with hundreds of others!

2. We suggest allowing two hours for your visit depending on how many selfies you want to take
We came through the main gate (which wasn’t busy) but there’s also a side gate which usually has smaller lines - if you walk around the bottom of the hill

3. Check out the ticket options - for an extra 5€ (30€ rather than 25€) you can buy a combination ticket. This gets you into the Acropolis and seven other sites. It’s valid for five days but you can only enter each site once. Top tip - buy the combination pass from one of the other less busy sites to skip the Acropolis ticket lines

4. Take plenty of water and sunscreen as there’s limited cover at the top!

5. Finally, download a free audiotour - there’s plenty online and it’s great for providing some history and context to your visit. Try Rick Steve’s free version which we’d recommend.

== 01:30 Theatre of Dionysus ==

This dates back to the mid to late sixth century BC. This ancient theatre may not look so huge today but the seats stretched right up the hill. It seated a massive 17,000 spectators and hosted Greek (and later Roman) tragedies and comedies.

Theatre was enormously popular in ancient Greek society but only men were allowed to perform - so they played the role of women too. They wore huge masks to show different emotions which could be seen from way up the hill.

== 04:45 Odeon of Herodes Atticus ==

This is a stone Roman theatre built in 161 AD by the Greek Herodes Atticus in memory of his Roman wife. You need to imagine it with a roof - made from Cedar wood. The theatre was used for concerts and could seat up to 5,000 people. It still hosts major events today - though just try to avoid days when it rains! Past performers have included Elton John and Andrea Bocelli.

== 12:30 Top of Acropolis Hill ==

We’re now at the top of Acropolis Hill. There are three main things to look out for here -

1. Straight ahead is the Propylaea - the gateway to the Acropolis
2. To the left is a tall pedestal - the monument to Agrippa
3. And on the right is the Temple of Athena Nike

The entrance into the Acropolis was controlled by the Propylaea. The monument to Agrippa is an empty pedestal today but previously hosted a bronze life-sized statue dedicated by the city of Athens to Marcus Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus. The Temple of Athena Nike is dedicated to the goddess Athena Nike and built around 420 BC. Nike means “victory” in Greek. The statue of Athena held a helmet in one hand - a symbol of war; and a pomegranate in the other - a symbol of peace.

== 15:15 Parthenon ==

We’re now exiting the Propylaea and straight ahead you can see the Parthenon - the most famous temple. This was again dedicated to Athena - whom the people of Athens considered their patron.

Construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the peak but had a number of iterations. This one started after the battle of Marathon

In history, it has not just been a Greek temple. Under Turkish rule it became a mosque and in the fifth century AD it was converted into a church. A large part of it was destroyed in 1687 by the Venetians. It’s currently undergoing restoration today - so apologies for the background noise!

The Parthenon was designed by architects Iktinos and Kallikrates and has eight columns on the front and back and 17 columns along the sides. Marble statues were at each of the corners and sculptures telling the life of the goddess Athena cover the pediments.

== 19:07 The Erechtheion ==

We’re now walking across towards The Erechtheion. It was considered the most sacred site of the Acropolis. It is a temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon.

Full tour of the magnificent Acropolis in Athens | Trip to Greece 2022 | 4K walking tour

Acropolis - The landmark of Athens in Greece. The Acropolis is a unique place in the world - the origin of Western culture and a symbol of architectural and artistic perfection. The Acropolis of Athens is the city's landmark and probably the most famous structure of ancient Greece. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The Acropolis was designed as a fortress and cult site to honor the goddess Athena and houses some of the most representative buildings of ancient Greece.
The Parthenon is arguably the most significant temple on the site and is considered the crown jewel of Hellenic architecture. Mistakenly, the Parthenon is often equated with the Athenian Acropolis, but it is only part of the sacred site, which was built between 464 BC and 406 BC on a 156-meter-high rock and towers magnificently above the Greek capital.
The Acropolis of Athens is one of the most famous sights in Greece and the world. Annually it attracts nearly 3 million visitors and is the highlight of any Athens city trip. With its magnificent buildings and columns, it fascinates not only archaeologists and historians.
On foot to the Acropolis
The Acropolis is located in the center of Athens, surrounded by the popular districts of Plaka, Psyrri and Monastiraki. So from there you can easily walk to the Acropolis, getting lost is hardly possible as the Parthenon is really visible from everywhere.
By Metro to the Acropolis
Two metro stations are located in the immediate vicinity of the Acropolis. If you get off at the Acropoli stop in the Plaka district, it only takes about 3 minutes to get to the south entrance of the Acropolis. From the stop Monastiraki it takes about 10 minutes to the north entrance (which is actually in the west). Since this is the main entrance, it is usually busier than the south entrance. There are long waiting times at both entrances, so it makes sense to book tickets in advance*.
The Acropolis of Athens
An acropolis is a settlement or citadel, where in Greek akron means highest point or extremity and polis means city. There is more than one acropolis in Greece, for example the Acropolis of Lindos in Rhodes. However, the Acropolis of Athens is the most famous of its kind and is considered a landmark of Western democracy. This sacred site on a hill that was inhabited in Neolithic times is the most visited attraction in Greece. The akrópoli or city at the top more than lives up to its importance, as the site on which it stands is 156 meters above sea level. In addition to the famous Parthenon, the Acropolis is home to many other buildings steeped in history. Among them are the Odeon of Herodes Atticus , the Temple of Nike and the Propylaea. The Parthenon is said to have once housed a huge statue of the Greek goddess Athena made of gold and ivory. Today, a smaller replica of it can be found in the National Archaeological Museum.
From ancient defense site to monument
According to experts, the Acropolis Hill has been inhabited since the third millennium BC. Around 1300 BC, there was already a royal palace here and a massive fortification wall (Cyclopean Wall) to protect it from attackers. This was followed by the construction of several temples that had already disappeared. Around 600 BC, the Acropolis was developed into a sacred site for the worship of the goddess Athena. After the destruction of the old Acropolis in 480 BC by the Persian army of Xerxes, a long process of reconstruction began under the leadership of the politician Pericles. Athens was now considered the center of the Hellenic Empire. During this time, the Erechtheion and the Nike Temple were built, among others.
Later Athens was conquered by the Romans, who added some more important buildings to the capital. In the 9th century, during the Byzantine Empire, the Acropolis was used as a fortress and the Parthenon was declared the supreme Episcopal Church of Athens, after Christianity had already been proclaimed the state religion. After sieges by the Crusaders and later the Ottomans, the Acropolis was severely damaged during the Greek War of Independence between 1821 and 1829. Of a former population of 40,000, less than 10,000 remained in Athens.
The Acropolis' current appearance is due to a major restoration between 1833 and 1863, after Greek independence was proclaimed and Athens was declared the capital.

Athens, Greece Walking Tour (4k Ultra HD 60fps) – With Captions

Please also check our new channel: @AdventureHunterTV
We recorded this 4k ultra hd video during our trip to Athens, Greece on June 2021.
Athens is the capital of Greece and the country’s cultural, political and economical hub. The city was founded over 5,000 years ago and certain of its inhabitants have influenced the development of the western culture. Ancient Greek democracy had a deep influence on the design of other political institutions around the world. The city’s numerous historic monuments from the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras, make it a fascinating place to visit for tourists from all over the world. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. In 1834, following the Greek War of Independence, Athens was chosen as the capital for the newly independent Greek State. The city has hosted the Olympics three times: in 1896, 1906, and 2004. It is one of the few cities to host the Olympics more than once.
Our guided walking tour is about 7.45 mile (12 km) long and covers most attractions and historic sites of Athens.

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis is from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, highest point, extremity) and πόλις (polis, city). The term acropolis is generic and there are many other acropoleis in Greece. During ancient times it was known also more properly as Cecropia, after the legendary serpent-man, Cecrops, the supposed first Athenian king.

While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as far back as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles (c. 495–429 BC) in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the buildings whose present remains are the site's most important ones, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Parthenon and the other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians during the Morean War when gunpowder being stored in the Parthenon by the Ottomans was hit by a cannonball and exploded.
