ANTIGUA GUATEMALA 4K DRONE | City destroyed by Earthquake UNESCO Heritage Site

Antigua a beautiful historical city in Guatemala, a must visit if you travel around. The city has a great vibe, you can feel the Guatemalan culture soaking from the walls all around you. And talking about culture it is a home to a substantial indigenous population which master the local art and craft.

City has something magical that I have never seen before, it has an amazing colonial architecture with baroque and renaissance features. Many houses have huge flower gardens in the center and the most interesting is that most of the monuments are partially destroyed but still in condition where you can walk inside. Above that the whole city is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes which you can hike.

Antigua used to be a capital city of Guatemala, but it has been completely destroyed twice. Once in September 1541 by lava from nearby Volcán de Aqua. And after in 1773 by series of massive earthquakes, when most of the city was destroyed.

After that authorities decided to move the capital city to a new destination which we know as Guatemala City. Antigua was almost completely abandoned until the boom of coffee production in the region which brought new investments and people to the city.

Antigua is a designated UNESCO world heritage site and it is protected from uncontrolled urban and industrial development. UNESCO also decided that all the ruins should stay as they are, so there is no plan to reconstruct ruined churches and monuments. But actually this aspect creates a magical atmosphere in the city. Monuments in ruins tell a painful history of one city destroyed into pieces and nowadays transformed into one of the most beautiful travel destinations in central america.

The heart of the city is a Central Park or Parque Central where you can relax, enjoy great food and buy local art. As said before Antigua is a huge coffee producer so don´t hesitate to try local chocolate and drink a lot of great coffee. As you can see from the sky, the city uses modern city planning and has a nice grid structure.

Here you can see the main street where is one of the symbols of Antigua an Arco de Santa Catalina which served for nuns to walk from convent to school without being seen in the streets. Nowadays it serves as a post office.

From Antigua you can visit many other great destinations such as Volcano Acatenango,Flower Island, Mayan Pyramids in Tikal or Lake Atitlán.

We are back travelling! This time, we chose to explore Guatemala, the Land of the Maya! This Central America country is loaded with natural, historical and cultural appeal!
From ancient Maya cities lost deep in the lush rainforest to intimidating smouldering volcanoes, through jungle-fringed lakes in the highlands, colourful colonial cities and distinctive indigenous culture, everything in Guatemala is magical.
Guatemala is of course the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya where traditions and religious rituals mingled with Catholic belief continue to thrive,.
Guatemalan delicious food is a based of Maya cuisine with Spanish colonial influences. Dishes prominently include corn, beans, rice and chillies. it is also the birthplace of chocolate and home of the popular Hass avocado! And of course, their arabica beans produced one of the best coffee in the world.

After few mishaps in Guatemala City, we set foot in the beautiful candy-colored city of Antigua.
Cobbled streets, colonial Spanish architecture, nearby volcanoes and perfect weather make Antigua, a jewel in Central America’s crown.
The city was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979 and is completely protected from wild urbanisation. If you are an architecture lover, food fiend and coffee aficionado, this gem will be haven. Great place to party too!

Discovering Antigua: Guatemala's UNESCO-Listed Colonial City | Travel Vlog & Recommendations

Founded in the 16th century and once the capital of Guatemala, Antigua is full of so much history - we loved wandering down the cobblestone streets lined with colourful facades and discovering hidden courtyards and rooftops, lively markets, preserved ruins and old churches, all with the dramatic backdrop of three active volcanoes - Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a beautiful colonial town that really reminded us of Cartagena, where we first met (!), and also Cusco.

The most spectacular and iconic site is the Santa Catarina arch, which was built in the 17th century to allow the Dominican nuns to cross from their covenant to the school where they taught, without being seen by the public.

Guatemala's capital city was relocated from Antigua to its current location, about 1.5 hour drive away, after it was devastated by earthquakes in 1773. But today Antigua is still the travel hub and most popular destination in Guatemala.

Our Antigua recommendations ????

????????Where to stay? There are SO many hostels to choose from in Antigua as it is truly a travel hub. We would recommend Casi Casa, Ojalá and Maya Papaya - all of the hostels are beautiful colonial properties with a relaxed and friendly vibe.

????????What to do? As well as all of the tours you can do from Antigua (including the Volcan Acatenango hike), it is so fun to explore this old city, walking the cobblestone streets with colourful facades, checking out the ruins and old churches, and discovering secret courtyards and rooftops. Don’t forget to go see the markets too!

????????Where to eat? Check out El Local Cantina for brunch, Kombu Ramen Shop for amazing ramen, La Casa de la Empanada for Argentinian empanadas, and 7A Norte for some good (by Latin American standards…) pizza.

????????Where to drink? The best coffee we had was at Fat Cat Coffee House. The Antigua Brewing Co is an amazing craft cervezeria with the best rooftop in the city. Another great craft brewery is Antugya Cervez El Bosque, which is hidden away in a park with . They also have a small bar by the Arco de Santa Catalina. El Depósito is also a cool bar.
