Travel Guide to Lesotho

►Read the blog:

In this episode I take you to the the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho, the highest country in Africa. This country has the highest low point on earth.

The entire country is 1000 meters above sea level. It's located about 7 hours drive south of Johannesburg and 5 hours west of Durban. For the next 72 hours I am going to be showing you what to see and do in Lesotho!

This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!

After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.

Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.

Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.

We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)

Lesotho Daily Life

Lesotho (le-soo-too), officially known as the Kingdom of Lesotho is a mountainous, landlocked country surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. The first settlers were Bantu speaking people who called themselves the Basotho.

Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, and easily accessible from Johannesburg, Lesotho is a vastly underrated tourist destination. In comparison to South Africa, Lesotho's Basotho people are unique in culture, along with the highland terrain, which is a topographical extreme. The country's hospitable mountain lodges and trading posts will give travelers a refreshing perspective of Southern Africa.

Lesotho is essentially an alpine country, where villagers on horseback in multi-coloured balaclavas and blankets tread precipitous terrain. The hiking and trekking is often made on a famed Basotho pony, in order to enjoy the world class infrastructure of its three stunning national parks.

The 1000m-high lowlands offer craft shopping and sights, but don't miss a trip to the southern, central or northeastern highlands, where streams traverse ancient ground where dinosaurs flourished.

From Lesotho, we journey to a nearby fishing village just beyond the kingdom's peripheries, near Johannesburg.

The Highest Country in the World - Lesotho| South Africa Day 9

9/23/18 We crossed from South Africa into the country of Lesotho. We stopped to buy some food and water at the Pick N Pay mall location in Maseru and also grabbed some Barcelos to go. The roads to the Ha Kome caves were too questionable, so we ended up just going to get checked in at our airbnb. Our host literally hopped in the car with us, and we all went to see the Subeng Dinosaur Footprints. I was definitely feeling overwhelmed by the end of the day!

OVERLANDING THE KINGDOM OF LESOTHO

LESOTHO,
This is an enclaved country within the border of South Africa. It is one of only three independent countries surrounded by the territory of another country. Lesotho was previously the British Crown Colony of Basuto land, but it declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966. It is now also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The name Lesotho roughly translates to “the land of the people who speak Sesotho”. The economy of Lesotho is based on agriculture, livestock, manufacturing and mining. Lesotho became the largest exporter of garments to the US from sub-Saharan Africa. US brands and retailers sourcing from Lesotho include: Foot Locker, Gap, Gloria Vanderbilt, JCPenney, Levi Strauss, Saks, Sears, Timberland and Wal-Mart. In 2008 it exported goods worth 487 million dollars, mainly to the US. Now (2010) employment in the sector is coming down mainly due to international competition in the garment sector, however it still the largest formal sector employer in Lesotho. The average gross national income per capita in 2010 was US$98 per month. Diamonds are produced at the Letšeng, Mothae, Liqhobong, and Kao mines, which combined are estimated to produce 240,000 carats of diamonds in 2014, worth US$300 million. The Letšeng mine is estimated to produce diamonds with an average value of US$2172/carat, making it the world’s richest mine on an average price per carat basis. Export of diamonds reached US$230 million in 2010. Despite this Lesotho remains a poor country.
With all its land lying at altitudes in excess of 1300m above sea-level, it is a country of heights and extremes. Lesotho is famous for its spectacular scenic beauty branded by breathtaking mountain ranges, towering peaks, a rich variety of flora and fauna, crystal clear streams, surging waterfalls, diverse culture. A great place for overlanders who like 4×4 Off Roading and are in search for challenges and adventure.

While I constantly try to find the positives in every place I visit, there are a few nations that I just simply didn't enjoy.

The country of BRUNEI is one of them.

I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as stoning to death LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

Have you ever visited any countries that you didn't enjoy? Please share below, I'm curious to know.

Discover Lesotho the Mountain Kingdom of Africa | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

Lesotho is a small landlocked country nestled between the Drakensberg and Maloti mountain ranges and it is completely surrounded by South Africa. Officially a Kingdom, previously known as Basutoland, and a place that we left with the regret of not staying for longer.

Green valleys, sharp mountains, rivers, nature reserves and several national parks make Lesotho a natural wonder worth exploring by any traveler. We were surprised to learn that this country is one of the 3 remaining Kingdoms in Africa (the others being Morocco and Swaziland) even though it declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966.

The name Lesotho stands for “mountain kingdom” and that’s not a surprise as nearly ⅔ of the country consists of mountains. This country is also the proud owner of the highest low point in the world which is estimated at 1,400 meters above sea level.

Lesotho is Crazy Beautiful

I'm on Instagram at

Lesotho is crazy spectacular. It's just one of those countries that suits me. It's full of incredible mountains, and lots of rugged landscape. There's this wild freedom to the country that just grabbed me right away.

But, Lesotho is also a challenge; especially as a photographer. There are so many amazing things to see and photograph in the country, but it's a bit of a challenge finding ways to properly photograph them. There's very little tourism infrastructure, and even the roads don't really have places that you can safely pull over to make photos.

Still, there is this energy to Lesotho that I really love. It has me back to feeling really good about travel. It has my spirits back up, and has me excited to explore. Lesotho even has me excited for a bit of mis-adventure, and I got some. On my second day driving around, I smashed into a rock and bent the rim of my tire. Luckily, I got some help and eventually continued on my way.

I ended the day at a place in Lesotho called Semonkong. I came here to photograph a waterfall called Maletsunyane. It's the number one reason I came to the country, and though it would be even more spectacular if the water levels were higher, it's still impressive.
