7 Biggest Travel Mistakes When Coming to Latvia

x

6 Things NOT To Do in Latvia!

Latvia is a small country with a population of less than two million. While people are generally relaxed and tranquil there are some things which will offend. Here are 6 Things Not To Do in Latvia!

1. Don’t mention the Russians!
Latvia has a complex relationship with Russia. Many Latvians feel the Russians don’t accept them as their own independent country and many Russians living there don,t feel accepted as Latvians. Neither like an ignorant tourist voicing their opinion about it!

2. Don’t ignore their language!
The Latvian language was suppressed during the Russian occupation so try to learn some simple words.
Sveiki (hello)
Ardievas (goodbye)
Paldies (thanks).
They know they’re never going to be a global language but they really appreciate you trying.

3. Don’t avoid the local dishes!
Latvians are proud of their culture and cuisine. Try the local dishes and beverages and give your opinion, especially if you like them. From fried garlic bread to fresh fruit jams, Latvia has a varied cuisine with excellent domestic beers.

4. Don’t be aggressive (unless you’re driving!)
Latvians generally have a calm and “each to his own” lookout on life so don’t be brash or too bold, unless you’re behind the wheel, then it really is each to his own!

5. Don’t turn up empty-handed!
If you get invited to someone’s house always bring an odd number of flowers, an even number is associated with death, some food or beverages
and remember to take your shoes off just inside the door.

6. Don’t disrespect nature!
Half of Latvia is still virgin forest. Most Latvians are nature lovers and still follow many pagan traditions. They will show you how to make crowns from flowers and tea from the local herbs. Join in respectfully and they will appreciate it.

Latvia: What to Know Before You Visit Latvia

If you are heading to Latvia there are a few things you should know before you head to this forested land. The captial Riga is chock full of great architecture and some neat churches. The occupation museum is probably the most important museum to visit in the capital. Getting around the country is easist by bus. The Euro is the currency of Latvia. And you have forests in the interior and some nice beaches on the coasts to enjoy.

3 Things Latvia Will Shock You With ????????????

Travel to Latvia ► There are travel destinations that you visit and you can't wait to go back home.
But I am sure you like the opposite: go back home and still have your mind on that beach, on that hotel, on that bar with the amazing cocktails.
That was Latvia to me. Well, not the cocktails part ????

I went to that Baltic country with no expectations and I was amazed at how well I was welcomed.
Days after my return I was still feeling the wind in my hair with that Zipline. And the taste of the 2-year-old beer (it was left on purpose ????).

Have you recently been to a destination that leaves this taste in you?
Have you been to Latvia before?

5 Things American Tourists Shouldn't Wear in Europe

Grab some of our gear

Please Note: Young People Wear Many of These Styles Throughout Europe. These tips are geared toward 35+ year old travelers. Thanks for watching!

Grab a Wolters World Shirt

Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or skinnier fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.

10 things to know about Riga (Latvia) before your trip

Riga city guide and where to stay on a budget:

#traveleurope #eurotrip #europeancities #travelblogs #Riga

The Baltic States are quickly becoming my favourite stomping ground. Here's my first visit to Latvia

Join me on a pre-Christmas jaunt to The Baltic with a first time look at the fascinating city of Riga in Latvia. I'm only just learning about this part of the world and it's quickly becoming a favourite. There is a lot of unfinished business in the region for sure, but join me on these first few steps into a magical city I'm so glad to have FINALLY discovered.

This was a flying visit to Latvia, but stay tuned for a bit of a disaster in part two where my train journey doesn't quite go to plan...

THE GOPRO SAGA
A bit about the camera problems. I upgraded my GoPro, from an 8 to an 11, hoping to improve my content. Unfortunately on this, only my 2nd trip with the new camera, and for no reason at all (no settings changed) I got home to find a big chunk of my footage had no audio at all. A bit of research later and I see this is another GoPro problem, with some people losing more important footage than me. I really don't get how in 2023, GoPros can still be so damn unreliable. But I also don't get how difficult it is to find a decent alternative, and believe me, I've tried the competition as well. That being said, I still rate GoPro highly for the kind of discreet, easy filming that has shaped my channel to this point, and to be fair, they are replacing both the camera and the mediaMod. The only thing they can't seem to give me is any explanation why on earth this happened. And I know they know, but just aren't prepared to admit it! As I wait for a new GoPro11 to be delivered, I might be back to the comforts of my older edition for the next couple of videos, well, after part 2 of this Latvia trip anyway. I'll keep trying to improve my equipment and my skills, but boy would it be nice to have a camera I can rely on and trust. Right now, that's just not the case. If anyone out there can give me advice on which path to take, I'd be eternally grateful. It just feels annoying to invest hard-earned cash on a new camera, only for it to fail on its 2nd outing. And it sure made these edits a lot harder too! Thanks for reading my wee rant!!!

a week exploring LATVIA | walkthrough RIGA & JŪRMALA

Riga! The capital of Latvia. Once called the winter paris by the soviets and jugendstil architecture city by tourists. With my dad as somewhat of a guide we embarked on our adventure.

Plus Jūrmala where the richest or lucky have their second homes to splish splash in the Baltic sea during the summer. If the water gets warm enough to take a dip in.

Moreover, many people have been asking where I am from and if it wasn't obvious from the 3 videos that I made about Latvia, i am from this Latvia!

And I stayed there more for then 1 week. Staying there for a week just sounded nicer :D Thank for my dad and brother and his fam for having me!

HOW TO PLAY QUEENS:
The rules look more intimidating than they actually are I promise! :D

GOAL:
You have a deck of 52 cards(without jokers). The goal of the game is to have the least among of points or not to lose, meaning to not overpass 50 points. But if you reach exactly 50 the score goes back to 0. You collect points by the end of the rounds. The number correlate with the points ( so 8 is 8 and 3 is 3 etc), King and Jack are 10 points, A is 1 point and Queen is 0 points.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Each player gets 4 cards facing down. BEFORE the round starts the players can only look at two of their cards and remember them. You can NOT look at your cards again or you get a PENALTY CARD. The round starts with one person taking the top card from a deck; they can either switch it with any of their cards OR put it into the discard pile.

The next person can choose whether to take the new card from the deck or take the discarded card before and switch it with any of their cards.

To end the round one of the players after their turn announces “Queens” and locks their cards (no player can touch the cards). Everyone else plates their last round and after the cards get revealed. The player with the highest score gets a penalty cards in the next round.
IF the announcer of “Queens” does not have the lowest score or has a score that equals with another player, then the announcer gets a penalty card.

ADDITIONAL RULES:
Any player at any time can also discard their card(s) if the now discarded card matches the number or face cards. (additionally the special card action apply) But if the player accidentally forgot which card is the wrong one and discards it he gets a PENALTY CARD.
If a player makes a mistake they get a penalty card.

SPECIAL CARDS:
If you discard a King, you can look at any player's card.
If you discard a Jack you can choose to switch any player’s card with another player’s card.
If a QUEEN is discarded you get a penalty card.

This is why you NEED to visit RIGA | Europe's MOST eccentric city (VLOG)

Come and join me in exploring the beautiful capital city of Latvia, Riga. I had absolutely no expectations for Riga, just a spontaneous £4.99 outbound flight.

I was blown away by the architecture, the beauty and eccentricity of some of the buildings, such as House of the Blackheads and Riga Doms Cathedral. Combined with this, narrow streets, an abundance of colour and array of history, buildings such as The Three Brothers added a wealth of intrigue and history to the city.

I visited other interesting sites such as the Freedom Monument and Riga Central Market, considered as possibly the biggest market in Europe.

I hope you enjoyed this video, if you did feel free to join me on my other adventures. It would be great for you to come along. See you next time! :)

The train to Nowhere, Latvia. Will I find my way out of this tricky situation? Riga - Ludza (???)

This is exactly why last-minute decisions can be dangerous :) I decided to jump on a train out of Riga tonight and head as far east as I could go. The final stop of the train was right on the Russian border, but I didn't see much in the way of accommodation there, and with overnight temperatures plunging, I decided not to risk it. So the plan was to get off at the penultimate stop, Ludza, which also happens to be the oldest town in all of Latvia. My 'plans' didn't quite work out as I expected though, and but for the help of a friendly local, I might not be sitting writing this today :D
