How to Hold Your Breath Longer: a freediving tutorial from a professional freediver

How to hold your breath longer. There are no tricks to holding your breath longer and becoming a better freediver but there are ways that you can train. This tutorial details how to train for freediving, what aspects of our bodies we are training when we hold our breath, specific freediving techniques and the best exercises to maximise your natural freediving ability.

How do I hold my breath longer is probably the most common question that I get asked and the truth is that there is no simple answer. It's also impossible to put all the information to increasing your breath hold into one video so I will be releasing several videos on the topic.

The information in this video really does require you to have some prior freediving knowledge like:

-How to breathe before a dive
-How to rescue a blackout
-Hypoxia and Carbon Dioxide theory
-Basic freediving safety

Freediving to 30m - Learning To Dive With Just One Breath Of Air!

Hello, everyone. Welcome to Wild Kiwi Adventurer. Chris Long Gorge River. Today's video is about Learning to dive with just one breath of air.

Hi there, I’m Christan Long:
Did you know it's possible to dive 30m, or even 50m, or a world record 130m under the water in just one breath of air??

Join me on my SSI level 2 freediving course with Gili Air Divers as I learn to be a little bit less human and a lot more like a fish!

Actually I have done a level one course before in Egypt so this is another step up.

By the end of my course I managed to reach the maximum depth that I was allowed, 30m on one simple breath of air!

If you would like to learn this same skill you can. Free divers are not superhuman, they simply have the knowledge they need to dive deep under the water.

So check out Gili air divers, located on the stunning Island of Gili Air, near Bali. I highly recommend them, and a freediving course. You will most likely learn a lot more about yourself and the underwater world in just a couple of days.

My instructor first taught me some stretching sessions and a quick pool session. If anyone would like to learn this same skill they can. Free divers are not superhuman, they simply have the knowledge they need to dive deep under the water. By the end of the course I managed to reach a maximum depth which was 30m, in one breath. It’s possible to dive 30m, or even 50m, or a world record 130m under the water in just one breath of air. It just requires time and practice to do it.

5 Freediving Safety Tips that could save your life

Top 5 Freediving safety tips! Freediving safety has always been very important to me. I get asked a lot about freediving techniques and freediving tips but I really do believe that the most important information that I can offer and spread is freediving safety.

If you find the information in this video useful share it around. It's up to us to create a strong and safe freediving community around the world.

In the video I talk about:

The use of the snorkel
Weighting for freediving
Diving with congestion or with a cold
Why not to exhale underwater
Recovery breathing

Freediving Breathe Up and How to Breathe for Freediving: hold your breath longer

The breathe up, how to breathe for freediving and freediving breathing techniques are the topics covered in this video and is possibly the most essential information for us as freedivers. Freediving breathing techniques and a correct breathe up ensure safety, comfort in the water and also allow freedivers to hold their breath longer.

- How to breathe up?
- What is hyperventilation?
- What breathing is safest?

Questions about breathing techniques for freediving and breath holds are some of the most common questions that I get asked so I hope this video answers some of those questions!

One of the issues that i've been grappling with is that I don't want to create content that people feel supersedes freediving courses. At the same time though I get so many questions from so many divers who simply do not and will never have enough money to take a freediving course. So this video had been made for those people. Those who cannot afford the information and training that others can.

The Underwater City of Dubai

Did you know @visit.dubai has a 60m underwater city called @deepdivedubai ?

This project was an idea I’ve had ever since I started diving here, a concept I thought would allow us to truely show off the entire pool and it’s many rooms - rooms in which are rarely seen unless you visit yourself. This is at 30m and took a 4 person team and 4 dives to create. It was completed combining scuba diving with freediving - which we called technical freediving - which involves a lot of trust and coordination. When we short the off scuba scenes, I would remove my mask, take a breath, remove the regulator, act out my part then have my safety diver pass me back my regulator and layer mask and so forth. Acting underwater in this way is a challenge for 2 reasons: 1; I can’t see much underwater without my mask, most of what I see is blurred and in darker rooms sometimes just shapes and 2; you can’t talk underwater! So all planning needed to be strategically coordinated above surface and actioned with the use of hand signals.

I am going to be sharing a behind the scenes video sometime soon that will show all our orchestration going on and off scuba and how that is at all possible! So do stay tuned!

Freediving or Scuba Diving - How to learn Freediving | Ocean Chan Freediving

Welcome back to another episode of Ocean Chan Freediving. I wanted to share with you this week my freediving journey and looking at different disciplines to explore the ocean, in particular Freediving and Scuba Diving.
I started off as a scuba diver and soon became interesting in freediving. Both are great ways to explore the ocean, with pros and cons for each.
Scuba diving is definitely better for exploring underwater trails and landscapes, but I feel freediving has the edge in interaction with marine life.
Personally I am more of a freediving and I enjoy the physical and mental challenge of breath-holds.

Both are different sports, and go together. Life's too short, enjoy both and enjoy exploring the ocean.

The dives featured in this video include, Sail Rock in Koh Samui, Thailand and Little Bay in Sydney.
The depth of the dive at Sail Rock was around 20m, whilst the depth at Little Bay was between 9-11m.

I hope all of you have had some great dive experiences recently. Feel free to share your dives and diving journey in the comments section below!

How to Blow Bubble Rings while freediving

How to blow bubble rings while freediving. This freediving tutorial covers the basics of blowing vertical and horizontal bubble rings. Bubble rings are so much fun! I find myself doing them all the time when I'm teaching or just playing around in the water.

Vertical bubble rings are the ones you make with your mouth and tongue while horizontal bubble rings are made mostly with the hands and they travel sizeways through the water. Vertical bubble rings can be made with the air from your mouth but you can also create them with any bubble that may be floating around in the water.

1 day in paradise | Scuba Skydiving

There's only one thing that's better than scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and that's skydiving from a helicopter, releasing your parachute just above the water, swimming down to the bottom to get your tank and then scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef in Tropical North Queensland. This is Scuba Skydiving.

Fins for Freediving | Everything you Need to Buy the Best Fins for You!

Fins for freediving and absolutely everything you need to know to get the best fins for you. What are the best freediving fins? Is a question I get asked all the time and the truth is that there is no 'best fin' there are simple different fins for different diving styles and ocean conditions.

In this video I talk about the different types of fins that we can use for freediving, the different materials that we use to make the fins, different foot pockets and the different stiffnesses of blades and how to navigate your way through all these factors to find fins that will be best for you.

I speak mostly about Bi-fins in the video but I also touch briefly on monofins as well and why freedivers choose at times to use monofins.

Getting good visibility for diving | Freediving through swim-throughs

Welcome back to Ocean Chan Freediving.

I have been away for a few weeks. October has been a very busy month for me and the conditions have changed dramatically in Sydney. It is common for the dive conditions to deteriorate after winter and into October. On most days I have been able to go out, there have been strong currents causing murky and dangerous water as well as poor weather generally.

This week I will discuss some tips on making sure you get good visibility on your next dive as well as showcase some murky water dives.

Personally, I check the following things before I plan a dive. I make sure its a day with good weather, there is a low swell and there hasn't been any heavy rain in the lead up to the dive day.

I also have two dives, one from Freshwater Beach and the other from Oak Park. These two sites are usually quite good to dive at in Sydney, but on these occasions there was low vis - only 3-4 metres.
At Oak Park, I did find a small swim through, which was interesting to navigate through.
