3 Lessons from Traveling in Papua New Guinea

x

Papua New Guinea’s top stereotypes part 1: “Aren’t they cannibals there?” ????

THE FACTS: Cannibalism existed in PNG amongst certain tribes IN THE PAST…along with neighboring countries like New Zealand and Fiji…yet no one fears those much sought-over destinations…

Why did cannibalism exist? From what I’ve gathered, if invaders intruded on a tribe’s customary land, they were killed and eaten, mostly as a warning to others not to do the same.

THE REAL: As part of my immersion experience with @pngtribalfoundation, they took me to a “Skull Cave” in a very remote area to see the piles of skulls from the last generation of cannibals.

Not going to lie, it was pretty freaky. Especially learning that they only kept the heads. And also that it only stopped 50-100 years ago.

BUT! Cannibalism is LONG GONE and the communities in the areas where it existed are very welcoming and kind. They are now benefiting from their ancestors’ terrifying cultural rituals through tourism, and it helps encourage them to keep the areas accessible!

So in short! Please go to PNG to learn about and SEE remnants of this cryptic cultural custom, but don’t judge the current and future generation based on the past!

PS if you missed my Stories, check my PNG highlight to see why I ended up having to trek through the jungle and into the caves barefoot.

Would you go into a skull cave? …what if I went with you? ????

Group trip info coming soon!

In this video, you'll see and see my adventures in Papua New Guinea which is my country #22 in my quest to visit all 193 UN-recognized countries around the world. I had mixed feelings while travelling in Papua New Guinea. Despite my mixed feelings, I would definitely like to return to that country one day and explore the island or Rabaul and the autonomous region of Bougainville.

A Visit to a School in Papua New Guinea

While we were in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea in 2008 we had the chance to visit a school and speak with the students.

Kiriwina Island Papua New Guinea -What is Kiriwina Island Like?

The third port on our Papua New Guinea Encounter was Kiriwina Island.

The main things to do on this island are swimming/snorkeling and browsing the wares of the hundreds of local traders who come to the beach and village area when the cruise ships arrive.

Haggling over is not really something that the locals do so if you see something that you like and are happy with the price then why not buy it and help the locals out.

The traders on Kiriwina Island will take some foreign money e.g. Australian dollars, but they have very limited access to banks and it is expensive for them to change it into local currency so please take Kina if you can. Because of the limited opportunity to exchange foreign currency you will find many locals asking to buy any Kina that you have for foreign money they have accepted. This is not only helping them out but a great way to exchange any unused Kina at a better rate than you would get back at home.

You generally won't find ship shore excursions on Kiriwina Island but the locals are more than happy to chat to you about the island with no expectation of payment so why not take advantage of mixing with them and learning a little bit about this paradise. Oh and if you feel like giving them a tip for sharing with you I'm sure it will be received most gratefully.

Hope you enjoy this video.

#16 - Cultural Sensitivity // A Tale from Papua New Guinea

Read more at:

What did I learn in Papua New Guinea?

1) Bone up on local customs before visiting.
2) When meeting a stranger, smile, sing or play the harmonica. These are all universal in language, and can break down cross-cultural suspicions.
3) Travel with a local guide who can interpret and anticipate for you.
