SCOTLAND TRAVEL (2023) | 10 Beautiful Places To Visit In Scotland (+ Itinerary Suggestions!)

Scotland is the most northerly part of the four areas that make up the United Kingdom. It’s known for rugged landscapes defined by mysterious lochs, magical mountains, and gothic castles. Scotland also has a strong culture featuring Celtic music, traditional kilts, and sophisticated whiskies. In this video, we show 10 of the best places to visit in Scotland.

10. Edinburgh
Edinburgh is located in the south-east and it’s Scotland’s most beautiful and interesting city. This is the place to take in the unique Scottish culture, with a vibrant pub scene and intriguing historic sites.

???? Watch Edinburgh Video:

9. Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park
Situated approximately 60 miles or 96 kilometers to the west of Edinburgh, Loch Lomond & the Trassachs National Park is the oldest national park in Scotland. It’s one of the most popular places to visit thanks to its proximity to urban areas as well as a wide variety of activities.

☑️ Boat tour Loch Lomond:

8. Glencoe Valley
Glencoe Valley is located in the Scottish Highlands in western Scotland. The area is known for its impressive mountain scenery, beautiful waterfalls, and trails that climb steep peaks, such as the Pap of Glencoe.

7. Glen Nevis
Located right outside the town Fort William, Glen Nevis is one of the most spectacular and beautiful glens in the Highlands. Above all, it’s home to Britain’s highest mountain: Ben Nevis, which is an impressive day hike.

6. Glenfinnan Viaduct
Only a stone's throw away from Glen Nevis and Fort William, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is a must-visit in Scotland! Made famous in the Harry Potter films, this 21-arched viaduct is set amongst some of Scotland’s finest scenery!

☑️ Glenfinnan Viaduct Circular Trail:

5. Inverness
Inverness is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and is regarded as the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. Similar to Edinburgh, the city has a fantastic pub scene with great live music in the evenings.

4. Loch Ness
Located only a short drive from Inverness, Loch Ness is one of the most famous places in all of Scotland. The legend of the monster called Nessie goes back to ancient times.

3. Eilean Donan Castle
The Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed castles in the world for a good reason. It’s perfectly situated on a small island with a charming curved bridge connecting it to the mainland.

2. Old Man of Storr (Isle of Skye)
Skye is the second largest island in Scotland and in our opinion, it has the most picturesque views you’ll encounter on your trip. The Old Man of Storr is the most iconic sight on the island and attracts many hikers and tourists alike.

1. Quiraing (Isle of Skye)
Quiraing is located on the Northern end of the Isle of Skye and boasts some of the best natural views in all of Scotland. The jagged landscape was caused by a landslip, which exposed strange rock formations underneath a large cliff.

INVERNESS, SCOTLAND (2023) | 9 Fun Things To Do In & Around Inverness & Loch Ness

Inverness is located on Scotland’s northeast coast and is considered the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. It’s a fairly small and compact city with an abundance of places to stay, eat, and shop. In this video, we highlight 9 fun things to do in & around Inverness:

9. Walk the waterfront & Ness Islands
One of the most peaceful things to do in Inverness is to stroll around its beautiful waterfront area to the Ness Islands. You can start your walk in the city center and follow both banks of the river in an easy 3 km or 2 mi loop.

8. Hit the pub at night
For a classic Highland pub experience, head to one of the many pubs on Church Street: Highlander, Hootananny, Gellions, and more!

7. Visit Inverness Cathedral
Another fun thing to do in Inverness is to visit Inverness Cathedral, located on the banks of the River Ness. Built in 1869, this historic building is one of the prettiest cathedrals in all of Scotland. You can also visit the inside for a small fee.

6. Admire Leakey’s bookshop
If you’re into reading books, then Leakey’s bookshop is a must-visit. This is Scotland’s largest second-hand bookshop and you can find anything here, from contemporary paperbacks to vintage prints, books, and maps.

5. Do a whisky tasting
Scotland is famous for its whisky and Scottish people are very proud of this sophisticated drink. In Inverness, you can find whiskey at any bar or pub. We did a whiskey tasting at the Malt Room, which offers over 200 different malt whiskies for tasting.

4. Shop souvenirs at the Victorian Market
Built in 1890, the covered Victorian Market houses a variety of shops selling unique handmade gifts, art, and crafts. There are also a number of cafés and dining experiences here. It’s a great place to shop Scottish souvenirs.

3. Visit the nearby Clava Cairns & Culloden Battlefield
This prehistoric site is a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex that dates back to around 2000 BC. There are three different large cairns that can be visited and it’s entirely free. Nearby, you can also find the Culloden Battlefield & Viaduct, which played a significant role in Scottish History. It’s easy to combine both in one visit.

2. Spot Nessie at Loch Ness
Located only a short drive from Inverness, Loch Ness is home to the legendary monster called Nessie, which is said to live in the deep, murky waters. Fort Augustus is situated on the southern tip of Loch Ness, offering boat tours and spectacular views.

☑️ Loch Ness day tour from Inverness:
☑️ Loch Ness boat tour from Dochgarroch (13 mins drive from Inverness):

1. Visit Urquhart Castle
Finally, along the north shore of Loch Ness, you’ll find the ruins of spectacular Urquhart Castle.

⭐ BONUS: Isle of Skye & Eilean Donan Castle
☑️ Day tour to Eilean Donan & the Isle of Skye:

OUTLANDER locations you can visit PART 1 #outlander #scotland #lallybroch #travel #castle #midhope

If you are a fan of the TV Show Outlander, and are planning to visit Scotland, here are the first of many sites to see either by tour guide or on your own if renting/hiring a car:
#1 Midhope Castle - Lallybroch as seen on the show, was the home of Jamie Fraser. The site is 35 minutes away from Edinburgh City Center, and lies on the Hopetoun Estate. The castle cannot be entered as it is not in safe conditions, however you can walk around the outside and take photos there. The entrance fee is around 5 pounds.

#2 Hopetoun House - also on the Hopetoun Estate and 35 minutes away from Edinburgh, this Stately house was used in several episodes of Outlander Seasons 1-3. From the home of the Duke of Edinburgh, to scenes in Paris, this beautiful house can be toured both inside and outside. Other movies were also filmed here, including the Prince Switch from Netflix.

#3 Craigmillar Castle - just 15 minutes away from Edinburgh, this beautiful preserved castle was used as Ardsmuir Prison on the show. We spent around two hours here as there was so much history to learn as well as so many different rooms inside to explore.

#4 Bakehouse Close - a close is like an alley, all along the Royal Mile close to Holyrood Palace, and this specific one was used as Jamie's, or A.Malcolm's Printshop in 1766, when Claire returns to Scotland and time through the standing stones, in season 3 - ep 8.

If you enjoyed this short, stay tuned by Subscribing to see other future shorts featuring the other locations that we visited. Let us know in the comments!

Our home coastline is full of cool wee places, so let's join up the dots and walk the whole thing!

We didn't really know about this one until Alicja found a great book on Amazon - 'Angus Coastal Trail' by James Carron. Buying the book was the easy bit, we filmed the difficult bit! Follow us as we try to walk the full traditional Angus Coast from Invergowrie (just outside Dundee) all the way to River North Esk (just north of Montrose). Spoiler Alert: it wasn't as easy as we expected!

Filmed 30th April - 3rd May 2023 in Angus, Scotland.

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!
