Lovely Lovech; I finally find a pretty Bulgarian town! To Troyan Monastery
Day 30. 44km (52379kms) As I gathered the predominately toilet paper waste from my little clearing I startled an early morning walker. I wondered if she was on her way to leave some of her own.
Perhaps if Lovech fortress had been properly described as Lovech fortress ruins I wouldn’t have been disappointed. The views of the cliffs around the bend in the Osum River were impressive though.
But at last! A pretty Bulgarian town! Between the older timber and brick cottages around the fort, and the pastel coloured townhouses on the main square, I found the whole place very pleasant to cycle and to just sit. The covered bridge is a unique attraction in Bulgaria too, lined with tourist shops, but still very authentic-looking from the outside.
After returning the the covered bridge’s viewpoint to retrieve my helmet (I’d left it an hour or 2 before when I’d used it to prop my bike - my brain!!), and after a supermarket stop, I set off on the easy ride to Troyan monastery. It was already 4pm, but I wasn’t too worried, I didn’t plan to go far.
I was feeling much more cheerful as I rode up the gentle gradient back into the mountains. The sun had returned, the wind still at my back. The monastery was staggering, but I couldn’t concentrate on that now; my first priority was to find a place to sleep, knowing that tonight was forecast to be -4C. In Bulgarian I was directed to wait. In time 2 young monks returned from the town bearing shopping bags (why do I find it so weird whenever I see a bearded monk grocery shopping?!) and I was shown to a room. Troyan Monastery run a guest house so the price for warmth tonight is 30 Lev. With the heater on max, and after a hot shower I popped outside briefly to confirm what I already knew; the night was cooooooooold! Money well spent.

Водопад Сучурум, Карлово / Suchurum waterfall, Karlovo, Bulgaria walking tour
Suchurum (Flying water) waterfall is located on the river “Stara reka” (Old River), which flows through the town of Karlovo. It is about 8 meters high and is located about 480 meters above sea level in the northern parts of the city.
It is reached by a convenient road, which is also suitable for children. The walk is short and pleasant, as the road to it passes close to the river and along one of the beautiful parks in Karlovo. It is an excellent idea for a walk during the summer season, as at the beginning of the summer it is at its busiest, and the surroundings are cool and pleasant.

Hiking up the mountain in Karlovo Bulgaria
After 10 days in Burgas I need to get out and explore some more of Bulgaria. I ended up in Karlovo. Karlovo has an interesting historical center with a many beautiful old style houses. It is the birthplace of the most important Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levski (1837-1873) who was the leader of the movement that freed Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule.
But for me coming here is all about getting away and up there (almost) alone on the mountain I find a deep sense of happiness that reminds me how much I love to just bike or hike all day and make the decision to never forget how easy it is to find a quiet excitement when you are surrounded by beautiful nature and impressive views.
In the media you always see the poverty of Bulgaria. I want to show you it's riches.
The path I am on is an entrypoint to the Central Balkan National Park and you can go further to start a multiple day hike in the Balkans. I can only imagine the beauty of what is up there and hope to one day see more of this impressive but highly underrated part of the world.
Карлово / Trip to Karlovo
Karlovo is a small town, an extremely rich in history Renaissance town with old and new parts, which overlap to some extent. In the old part there are preserved authentic houses from the beginning of the 18th century. There are many historical monuments, history deeply connected with the past of Bulgaria. Vasil Levski is a national hero from the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. He was born in Karlovo and his house was turned into a museum. The shots in the video from 5:07 to 5:50 were taken in it. Many great Bulgarians were also born in Karlovo, and for me personally the most memorable are Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi. At that time they were traders working in Europe. Evlogi Georgiev left a legacy of golden BGN 23 million, and the entire first issue of the Bulgarian National Bank was BGN 6 million in gold, ie he bequeathed property exceeding 4 times the total money supply in the country. That is something huge. With these money was build Sofia University - the oldest higher education institution in Bulgaria. -
Karlovo (Bulgarian: Карлово [ˈkarɫovo]) is a historically important town in central Bulgaria located in a fertile valley along the river Stryama at the southern foot of the Balkan Mountains. It is administratively part of Plovdiv Province and has a population of about 30,340 (as of 2017), the mayor being Dr. Emil Kabaivanov.
Karlovo is famous for the worldwide-known rose oil, which is grown there and used in producing perfume. In addition to this, Karlovo is the birthplace of Vasil Levski, the most distinguished Bulgarian to start preparing the national liberation from the Ottoman rule in the late 19th century. There is a museum and large monument dedicated to him. Karlovo is also a popular location for tourism in the region.
During the 2000s, Bulgarian archaeologists made discoveries in Central Bulgaria which were summarized as 'The Valley of the Thracian Kings'. On 19 August 2005, some archaeologists announced they had found the first Thracian capital, which was situated near Karlovo in Bulgaria. Many polished ceramic artifacts (pieces of roof-tiles and Greek-like vases) were discovered revealing the fortune of the town. The Bulgarian Ministry of Culture declared its support to the excavations.

Етрополският водопад, наричан Варовитец, се намира близко до Етрополския манастир. Водопадът се образува от малка река, протичаща покрай манастира, която се спуска по карстов откос. Когато човек види извора, не може да си представи, че малко по-надолу има такъв красив и живописен водопад. Интересното е, че изворът на реката е само на 300 – 400 метра по-нагоре и тя изглежда като малко поточе. Малко преди водопада има по-малко каменно корито. Каменното корито е широко 50 – 60 см и дълбочината в него е едва 10 – 15 сантиметра. До 1970-те години в края на каменното корито е имало водно колело, което е задвижвало генератор за електрически ток, захранващ манастира. Водопадът е заобиколен от красиви растения и дървета.

Hello! This is a video of our walk to the Etropolis waterfall Varovites, which is located next to the Etropolis Monastery of the Holy Trinity.
The Etropole waterfall, called Varovites, is located close to the Etropole monastery. The waterfall is formed by a small river flowing past the monastery, which descends on a karst escarpment. When one sees the spring, one cannot imagine that a little further down there is such a beautiful and picturesque waterfall. Interestingly, the source of the river is only 300-400 meters higher and it looks like a small stream. A little before the waterfall there is a smaller stone trough. The stone bed is 50-60 cm wide and only 10-15 cm deep. Until the 1970s, there was a water wheel at the end of the stone trough, which drove an electric current generator that supplied the monastery. The waterfall is surrounded by beautiful plants and trees.

One of the most beautiful and picturesque parts of the mountain Stara planina - the national park Central Balkan. This is my second multi-day trek here - on June 19th 2023 I started a 4 day adventure. In this first part of the trip I start at the train station of the town Pirdop (I got of the morning train from Sofia) and I climbed up to the hut Paskal 1342m. I took a break and I continued up (in the next vlog) to the main ridge of Stara planina.
