Hotel: We stayed at Hotel the Roosenvelt.
We have been climbing the Lange Jan, ate at restaurant Scherp, and walked the 'kunst en cultuurroute' Middelburg. We've seen quite a few galeries in town!
We took lunch at the Kloveniersdoelen and went to the Zeeuws Museum.

Middleburg was built in the 9th century, as the middle of three strongholds. To protect the people from the plundering Vikings. And it still has a strong historic character nowadays.
If you walk through the small streets, surrounded by buildings like this, you might not realize it, but this city was hit hard during the second world war. Though the bombing of Rotterdam is more famous, both cities kind of looked like THIS, after the Nazi's visited.
But Middleburg did an amazing job rebuilding her beautiful historic highlights.
The Abbey for example, once the centre of a large monastic complex. It will provide you with some peace and quiet moments right in the center of town.
The impressive town hall is right on the market square, built in a beautiful gothic style. Look at all the details they created! It was voted as the second most beautiful building in the Netherlands a few years ago, and I can see why you'd love it.
And if you ever get lost in the little streets of the city center, you only have to look up for long John! Or Lange Jan, as we call him in Dutch. He's a tall friend you'll see from almost every part of the city center. Not just beautiful from the outside, but also to be enjoyed from within!
Well we have to go down to experience this city in a totally different way! Because Middelburg is also a very artistic place. They say there are even more galeries than cafees in town. And every first Sunday of the month, the artists just let you catch a glimpse of their art and workspace. Look for this flag on any building, and you're invited to enter!
An other cool thing happened in the middle of our art tour. We came across this little house here, and the owner just invited us in. Well guess what! He showed us the old fashioned kitchen under his house. It's not a museum or anything, just a private collection.
I love little discoveries and friendly moments like this one!
These tapestries are telling the story of Zeeland’s great sea battles against the Spanish at the beginning of the Eighty Years’ War. The Spanish fleet was much mighier, but the locals had the advantage of knowing the area. It's funny to see the propaganda in the scenes, but it also gives a good insight of a war at sea near the end of the 16th century. It's made and preserved very well.
Our weekend of Middelburg is almost over, but before we go home, I must show you the sea!
The Dutch are famous for conquering the water, and a big part of that is the Delta works.
It's built in the river delta to protect the land from the sea. Aaand...... there it is!
Well I am glad I'm all dry again. Only thing left to say is.....

Driving Around Small Town Zeeland, Michigan in 4k Video
Filmed on Monday, July 3 2023, I drive around the village Zeeland, MI to see what's going on.
Zeeland was named for the Dutch province called Zeeland.
In 1847, nearly 500 Dutch citizens sailed for America ostensibly to achieve religious freedom, although their decision to immigrate was probably also influenced by other factors, such as dire economic conditions in their home province of Zeeland, Netherlands and their opposition to modern scientific and social advances of the time.
The emigrants were led by James Van de Luyster, a wealthy landowner who sold his holdings in the Netherlands to advance money for the members to pay their debts and buy passage to America.
Van de Luyster arranged for three ships to sail for the United States. He came on the first ship, arriving on June 27, 1847.
Within twenty-five years, Zeeland had acquired a sawmill, a wagon factory, blacksmith shops, grocery stores, and a post office.
The village officially became a city in 1907. There was a two-story brick kindergarten building, a two-story brick grade school, and a brick house building. The city also had four furniture factories, one large manufacturing plant, and several mills and smaller manufacturing industries.
Today, Zeeland is home many successful companies including Herman Miller, a modern office furnishings company, and Mead Johnson, manufacturer of baby formula Enfamil.
As of the census of 2020, there were 5,719 people residing in the city.
The racial makeup of the city was 88.4% White, 1.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.6% Asian, 3.7% from other races, and 4.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.4% of the population.
4.6% of the population was living below the poverty line.

general information
The province is located in the southwest of the Netherlands. It ran along the delta of the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt. In literal translation, the name means “sea country”, and it was in honor of this region that the islands discovered by the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman (New Zealand) were named.
Capital
The provincial capital is Middelburg, located on the island of Walcheren. This relatively small city at the end of the 16th century was one of the most important cities in the country. Glassblowing was a particularly important contribution to the development of the country. Local resident Howart van der Haegen pioneered this industry. Now about 47 thousand people live here, and the city itself attracts tourists with its ancient architecture and rich history, which began back in 1217.
Nature
Picturesque landscapes in the province are best enjoyed in national parks. Osterhelde is the largest of them. It includes mainly the salty waters of the Eastern Sheld and meadows. It is home to many unique plants and animals. Another beautiful place in the province is Lake Grevelingen. Once it was part of the Meuse and Rhine delta, but then it was turned into a lake.

Of particular interest in the capital is its historical center, which is surrounded by a star-shaped canal. This chamber part of Middelburg with boats passing by and crossed by a large number of bike paths is typical of the country. Located on the southern coast of the Western Scheldt, Terneuzen is connected to the rest of the country via the Westerschelde Tunnel. The city is also an important port for the Netherlands. Among the Dutch, Terneuzen is known as the birthplace of Van der Decken, the captain of the Flying Dutchman, forever doomed to sail the seas. Of course, this is just a figment of the imagination of Frederick Marryat, the author of the legendary novel The Ghost Ship.
The second largest city in the province - Vlissingen - is located on the northern coast of the Western Scheldt. It is mostly industrial. There are many tourists here only in the warm season, when the local boulevard overlooks the coastline. It is here that large ships pass so close that you can enjoy their grandeur.
What to see
The medieval town of Vere also deserves attention. In its center are concentrated architectural monuments dating back to the 15th-16th centuries. Among the largest are: the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1479, the Town Hall, erected between 1474 and 1517, Scottish Houses from 1561 and the Watchtower, the exact date of construction of which is unknown.
The history of the province is best described in the Neltje-Jans Theme Park Museum. Guests can take a boat tour and see how the mussels are grown. For young visitors, a show with fur seals will be a real show.
There are several national parks in Zealand. One of them is the Zvin nature reserve, which lies on the border with Belgium. It will be interesting for both adults and children, as many representatives of fauna and flora live on its square. The highlight of the park are sharks - not the most frequent inhabitants.
Attractions
The City Hall building in Middelburg can be seen from afar. It is located on the main square of the city - Market Square. The architectural details of the building are a prime example of Dutch architecture. The building is surrounded by colorful shops.
The Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg is the main museum in the province, covering the history of the region. On its vast territory, a large number of expositions with artifacts of past centuries, divided by time intervals and classes, have gathered.
Archeology lovers will love the Carolingian Fortress, dating from the last quarter of the 9th century, which protected the area from Viking raids. Of course, it has not been completely preserved, but tourists can see the bridge and the rampart, on which the fort itself once stood.
