Walking tour Helenendorf: Azerbaijan's First German Settlement at Goygol
At this video we will introduce you the historical movement of Germans to Azerbaijan on XIX century.
Goygol or Khanlar is a district in northwestern Azerbaijan. Formerly known as Khanlar, the region was renamed Goygol after Lake Goygol, the famous blue lake, by the decision of the Parliament of Azerbaijan on April 25, 2008. The administrative center of the rayon is the city of Goygol.
Goygol district is located on the mountainous and foothill zone in the west of Azerbaijan, 364 km away from Baku. Its highest point is 3724 metres above the sea level. Goygol raion borders on administrative districts of Samukh to the north, Goranboy to the east, Kalbajar to the south, Dashkasan to the west, Shamkir to the north-west and Ganja city to the north.
The administrative center of the district, Goygol city was established in 1819 by German settlers came from Kingdom of Württemberg and was called Helenendorf. Houses were built in German style, streets were laid down, a school, a kindergarten and a music school were established. The main building of the current Agrarian Industry Plant was constructed as a winery by the Fohrer brothers who were dealing with wine and cognac production there.
In the area of Goygol district, Narimanov district was established in August 1930 of which center was Helenendorf. Narimanov district was renamed as Khanlar district and its center Helenendorf was called Khanlar city since November 1938. The territory of the district was divided into 2 districts - Samukh district was created in addition to Khanlar district in February 1992. The names of the district and its center were changed again in 2008 according to the Presidential Decree dated 7 May 2008 and have been called as Goygol district and Goygol city respectively.

Göygöl is a natural impounded lake in Azerbaijan. It is situated at the footsteps of Murovdag, not far from Ganja.
Nestled in the Lower Caucasus Mountains a short distance from Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second city sits on the almost elusive Lake Goygol. The picturesque lake surrounded by dense forest was only recently opened to the public. Here’s how to take a day trip to one of Azerbaijan’s most beautiful spots.
Lake Goygol rates as Azerbaijan’s most beautiful lake. A 12th-century earthquake created the mountain lake, which sits 1500 metres above sea level and attracts thousands of local tourists each year. The deep blue lake surrounded by lush forests in the Lower Caucasus Mountains stretches for almost 3 kilometres. A variety of wildlife, including several species of birds and fish, call the area home too.
But that’s not the only appeal. Several German settlers once formed villages in the nearby mountains before the Soviets moved them away. A hint of German culture hangs in the air with a Lutheran Church and a few remaining monuments. Given that until recently Lake Goygol was off-limits to tourists, those who get the chance to visit this photogenic spot near Ganja should feel privileged.
Because of Lake Goygol’s altitude, the air temperatures will be a welcome change from Azerbaijan’s summer. The vast majority of tourists visit in either spring or summer. But, each season brings a different feel and ambience. The biggest tip, however, will be to avoid weekends when possible to steer clear of the crowds.

Dəniz səviyyəsindən hündürlüyü 1556 metr, sahəsi 0,78 kvadrat kilometr, orta dərinliyi 30 metr, ən dərin yeri isə 96 merdir. Uzunluğu cənubdan şimala 2800 metrə, ən enli yeri isə 800 merə çatır. Əsasən yağıntı və Yuxarı Ağsu çayının suları ilə qidalanır.
Göygöl 1139-cu ildə Gəncə şəhəri yaxınlığında baş verən dağıdıcı zəlzələ zamanı Kəpəz dağının zirvəsinin dağılaraq Ağsu çayının dərəsini bağlaması nəticəsində əmələ gəlib.
Flora və faunası: Gölün ərazisində 423 növ bitki, o cümlədən dərman bitkiləri bitir. Onların 76 növü ağac və kol, digərləri isə ot örtüyünə aiddir. Gölün sahilləri boyu maral, cüyür, ayı, qaban, dağ keçisi, canavar, tülkü, çaqqal, porsuq, oxlu kirpi, meşə pişiyi, vaşaq məskunlaşıb. Göldə həmçinin forelə rast gəlmək olur.
Göl 1965-ci ildə təbiətin və heyvanat aləminin qorunması məqsədi ilə yaradılan Göygöl qoruğunun ərazisinə aiddir.

Göygöl Gölü, Azerbaycan’da bir göldür.
Azerbaycan'daki ilk millî park olan ünlü Göygöl Millî Parkı'nda yer almaktadır. Kapaz Dağını yerle bir eden deprem (12. yüzyıl) sonucunda dört bir tarafı Küçük Kafkas Sıradağları ile çevrili olan büyük dağ gölü Göygöl oluşmuştur. Deniz seviyesinden 1.600 m yükseklikte bulunan Ağsu nehrinin pitoresk çukurundaki gölün suları olağanüstü bir balık faunası olan büyük bir akvaryumdur.
Kafkaslardaki pek çok dağ gölleri arasında en temiz olanıdır.
Gölün uzunluğu yaklaşık 2,5 km, genişliği 600 m, derinliği 93 m'dir. Ocakla mart ayları arasında donmaktadır. Gölün dik sahilleri sık meşe ve gürgen ormanlarıyla kaplı olup meşe, gürgen ve kayın ağaçları yetişmektedir. Burada elma, armut, vişne ve erik gibi meyve ağaçlarına da rastlanmaktadır. Yağışlı mevsimde gölün kenarlarında mantar ve orman meyveleri toplamak mümkündür. Ormanlarda geyiklere, yaban domuzlarına, ayılara, kurtlara, vaşaklara ve diğer pek çok hayvana rastlamak olasıdır.
