THORNER: Leeds Parish #12 of 38
One of the more quirky features of this village would be that it has no street lighting. This is something that’s so normal usually, but here, when it grows dark, it stays dark! The parish contains the hamlet of Eltofts which is out to the West towards Shadwell. That’s important because some of the features in the village make reference to it
The name comes from the Old English words þorn and ofer, and thus means thorn bank. As for Eltofts it comes from the personal name Ella and the Old English word toft, itself borrowed from Old Norse. It means “Ella's plot of land”. The former Bishop's House at Eltofts was the Dower House of the Earls of Mexborough, hence a connection here to South Yorkshire
In 1245 the village acquired a market, and the area around Main Street shows a typical medieval layout of strips leading from a market street. As well as farming, pottery was a local industry in the Middle Ages, supplanted by the textile industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Eastern end of the village is much more modern, and there’s a reason for that. In 1970 the historic core was designated a Conservation Area by Leeds City Council.
The village once had a railway station and an annual agricultural show here which ceased in 1924. One of the prettiest things about this village comes in the form of the Mill Beck which, at the South western end of the settlement forms a shallow ford. Running right through the village, the Mill Beck has a total length of 0.45km. It may be relatively short but it’s pretty and idyllic!
I’d never been here before and I would certainly recommend you have a look around if you haven’t before as well. This is THORNER.

NORTH ELMSALL: Wakefield Parish #12 of 30
Today we're tackling the first of four parishes that form an area to the Southeast of Wakefield known as SESKU, which stands for South Elmsall, South Kirkby and Upton. but confusingly, to begin with, this one's not a part of that acronym.
You see this parish is centered around a tiny village that sits to the South of Upton, and the boundaries technically cover part of it in the form of the Harewood Estate (or Wrangbrook), which grew in the 1960s thanks to the presence of Upton Colliery.
When you look at the boundaries of this one on a map, it does look quite confusing, with the village a mere speck in the middle of a chunk of land which contains areas that ought to belong really to other parts of SESKU, but I don't make the rules!
All I know is the main village, with it's gorgeous church and wonderful old houses is one of the prettiest places in West Yorkshire, flanked by thr bustling Minsthorpe with it's huge industrial estate and the aforementioned area of Upton.
The SESKU parishes are an interesting foursome. Let's get started with NORTH ELMSALL.

10. Belfast, Northern Ireland

The next one of the 10 greenest cities in the UK is Nottingham, a city in Nottinghamshire. According to a Sunday Times article published on September 1, 2017, 15.3 percent of Nottingham is covered in accessible green space. This made it the second greenest city then in Britain. An overall 25 percent of the city is made up of parks and green spaces.
Up to 32 parks in this city have been recognized by Keep Britain Tidy, an environmental charity, as amongst the very best in the UK. Nottingham also has several awards that recognize and highlight the value the city authorities place on their parks and green spaces as an important part of people’s lives and well-being in the city.
7. Glasgow, Scotland
In 2020, Glasgow won the top prize of Global Green City at an online awards ceremony organized by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFSH). Called the Global Green City award and supported by the United Nation's Environment Program, the award puts Glasgow in the same bracket as Vancouver, Vienna, and Yokohama among many other European, American, and Asian cities that have been previous winners of the award.
Glasgow got this award based on its efforts that scored it high across several criteria including planning, low carbon, energy efficiency, transportation, open spaces, buildings, and the economy. Glasgow scored a total of 32 percent on these and that placed it second in the table.

Top 10 Tallest Buildings in Liverpool 2020
A video showing the current top 10 tallest buildings in the UK city of Liverpool in 2020.

The list includes the recently topped out The Lexington which is close to completion
There are a few further projects floating around which are on the cards however given the current climate it remains to be seen if they will break ground in the near future although the recently stalled Infinity Towers may remerge under a redesign.
