The Wild Coast Eastern Cape South Africa
A Wild Coast Road Trip in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. A 2000 km round trip over 7 nights, staying at the Storm's River Mouth Rest Camp in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park for our first night. What an awesome place, with log cabins and camp sites right on the ocean, and a must do is a hike to the pedestrian suspension bridge over the mouth of the Storm's River itself.
Then it was onto the Wild Coast, although we spent one night along the way at Port Alfred. Morgan Bay is about 100km past East London and is very close to the mouth of the Kei River, the start of the Wild Cost proper. A really pleasant town with friendly people, awesome views and a spectacular hike along the cliffs on the edge of the village.
A short ferry ride across the Kei River and we were in the are previously known as the Transkei, rural South Africa where cows have right of way and life is synched to a much slower pace. The road the Coffee Bay ranges from excellent on the N2 national route, to pretty awful once you get off the main roads. Loads of potholes, unmarked speed humps and an assortment of domestic animals wandering around.
Coffee Bay itself is a strange place, there are no facilities as such, no shops other than spaza shops, some basic back packers and pizza joints, but we managed to find a decent guesthouse which was awesome. The village is spoilt by the abundance of rubbish lining the streets, and even beaches, locals told us that the local municipality has long since ceased to function. Which is a pity, because it has so much potential.
The Hole in The Wall is a must visit, we were told that the road was terrible and only passable in a 4x4. Which is incorrect, there is maintenance on the go and it can be done in a normal car. The informal guides can be a problem, I found that a firm but friendly approach was the way to go. It's a spectacular natural wonder, I highly recommend it.
NB! I've Re-published this video, the soundtrack wasn't right for the content on the earlier version; same video here, different soundtrack, I do hope you enjoy it.

TEN REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT SOUTH AFRICA
1. You can drink our tap water (at most places, anyway).
2. You can see Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Giraffe, Rhino and Crocodile in the wild (and lots, LOTS more -- the Kruger Park is a MUST!!!!).
3. South Africa has the longest wine route in the world, the R62 wine route
4. The Tugela Falls is the second highest waterfall in the world, where the water tumbles down 850 metres. First place goes to the Angel Falls in Venezuela at 979 metres.
5. Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world -- and the largest green one. The Grand Canyon in the US is the biggest, and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia the second.
6. South Africa has some of the best reefs in the world for scuba diving.
7. We have really good weather. Really, really good weather!!! Especially in the Lowveld in winter!
8. Pretoria has the second largest number of embassies in the world after Washington, D.C.
9. The only street in the world to house two Nobel Peace prize winners is in Soweto. Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu both have houses in Vilakazi Street in Soweto.
10. South Africa houses one of the three largest telescopes in the world at Sutherland in the Karoo.

S1 – Ep 386 – Tesselaarsdal – Another Memorable Part of our Adventure!
Our visit to Tesselaarsdal was nothing short of breathtaking. The journey itself was a scenic delight, with lush green wheat fields and vibrant yellow canola fields stretching as far as the eye could see. The charm of the village, coupled with its rich history, left us utterly captivated. However, our plans hit a snag when heavy rain prevented us from reaching our booked accommodation. Thankfully, we were able to find a welcoming place to stay for the night in Caledon, turning an unexpected twist into another memorable part of our adventure. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #tesselaarsdal #caledon

WILLOWmore sa SOUTH AFRICA
On a warm summer day in 1856 Frederick Lehmkuhl developed a homestead that became the village of Willowmore in 1864, the gateway between the Great Karoo and the harbour at Knysna. The Dutch Reform Church built a rectory, which later became a girls hostel, and today was our accommodation as the Willowmore Historical Guesthouse. We were warmly welcomed by Deon van der Merwe, (HTTP:// a friendly large Afrikaans, who rearranged guests and assisted me to a cabin. Our traditional room was outfitted with nineteenth century furniture, brass beds, antique chairs, dressing table and an old original oil painting. Unfortunately it was also unheated, about fifteen degrees Celsius, and cold. Our dinner was delivered to the cottage, babotie for Richard and I ate very tough Calamari and tough rump steak consumed with a Carling Black Label beer, brewed here under license from Canada. We ate, and then went to bed to escape the cold at 10.00 pm. Richard later told me, I heard four women visitors getting very vocal and pissed at the bar, and I intended to join them, but I fell asleep.
Saturday 16 August Knysna
We dressed by 8.30 am and ate a hotel breakfast of fried eggs and bacon, checking out about 11.00 am. The cost with meals was $150.00, which I felt, was excessive, but last night we were very pleased to get any accommodation. Im not sure why we were so slow getting going, but I need time to type my journal, and Richard likes to walk and explore. We drove for an hour to Uniondale, turned off the N9 there onto R339, a secondary road, and then drove to Adventuur, where R339 narrowed to a double lane dirt track running ninety kilometres over a series of towering, blue tipped mountain ranges to the coast at Plettenburg Bay or Knysna.
Baviaanskloof South Africa Eastern Cape Road Trip
Baviaanskloof reserve in the Eastern Cape, between Willowmore and Port Elizabeth is a lightly touched World Heritage Site. We spent 3 days on an trip through the reserve, and what an awesome and amazing place it is. Baviaanskloof is pretty remote, despite the fact that it isn't actually very far as the crow flies from major coastal urban centres like Port Elizabeth or George in the Garden Route.
Once you get into this hidden valley though, the wider world seems to be very far away.
We stayed in an actual cave on our first night, which was a really really different experience. I can recommend sleeping in a cave at least once in your life, here's the website:

Elands Rivier, Tsitsikamma. Truly a hidden gem. HD cinematic drone video.
A hidden gem in Tsitsikamma, between the R102 (old cape road) and the N2 halfway between Kareedouw and Stormsriver. I took my DJI Mavic down the stairs to the river and sent the drone up from a rock we used to dive from as kids 20 years ago.

Discover Uniondale, situated in the Garden Route of South Africa.
Ask a dozen people what they know about Uniondale and you will get twelve different answers. To locals, Uniondale is the very best place to be and they love getting visitors to share it with. Proud of their agricultural 'dorpie', visitors will experience the sense of community and belonging that only happens in small towns.
Visitors are delighted by the wide-open spaces, diverse and stunning scenery, magical flora and incredible geology. The historical buildings include seven national monuments and the town flows with the charm of the Klein Karoo. Raw South African history is visible in forts preserved from the Anglo-Boer war and in the restored 1800's watermill. Visitors can go on a unique tour of the town inside a bright yellow tuk-tuk, hosted by a local resident, and learn about the quirks of this unique place. Hipster bicycles can also be hired from the Aloe African Cafe, to explore the town using the demarcated routes.
With more than 300km of dirt roads in the area, Uniondale is a mountain biking and off-road vehicle nirvana. Annually, over 4,000 cyclists participate in the 100km Karoo to Coast mountain bike event from Uniondale to Knysna. 4x4ers travel through Uniondale enroute to the Prince Alfred’s Pass and can also enjoy the paths at M'kama.
There are two special artist locations in Uniondale - Sheena Ridley's Langkloof Sculpture Garden and the Kannabos Gallery and Sculpture Garden. Ridley's life-size sculptures are constructed out of steel and concrete or bronze, which are more limited edition. Kannasbos is owned by set builders who work on Hollywood films.
The town offers rustic guesthouses, remote farm stays, self-catering cottages and camping sites. It is a place to unwind, slow down and switch off with no traffic and sometimes - no cellphone signal!

S1 – Ep 297 – Patensie – A Wonderful Experience to Explore this Town!
As we drove through Patensie we came upon the old station and I couldn't help but notice the many people standing around. The old railway turntable which turned the locomotives around was amazing. We then made our way to the Ripple Hill Hotel and I was immediately struck by its old-world charm and character. It is currently being restored and it was clear that a lot of care and attention to detail was being put into the process. As I walked through the hotel, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. The elegance in the place was truly captivating and it was clear that it had a rich history and story to tell. Overall, our visit to Patensie was a wonderful experience and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have explored this beautiful town and its hidden gems, such as the Ripple Hill Hotel. It was a wonderful experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #patensie #ripplehillhotel
