There are lots of bureaux de change in Britain – often located inside:

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Sheffield name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city of Sheffield has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.

In the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Known as the Steel City, many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893.

The city has a long sporting heritage, and is home to the world's oldest football club, Sheffield F.C. Games between the two professional clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, are known as the Steel City derby. The city is also home to the World Snooker Championship.

WEST HALLAM: Erewash Parish #9 of 14

Time for a large residential village close to Ilkeston in the county of Derbyshire. It’s one of many places in Erewash to bear the name Hallam. The other settlements locally with that name include Kirk Hallam, which we briefly caught a glimpse of last week, Little Hallam and the Hallam Fields area of Ilkeston. This is the only Hallam to have its own parish council. The others are all unparished areas, save for the tiny section of Kirk Hallam which belongs to Dale Abbey

Until the early 20th century it was nothing but a small rural village and the property of the Newdigate family. Most jobs were either in agriculture or in mining. How quickly times have changed. These days, this is a commuter settlement, with many people living here working in Ilkeston, Derby, Nottingham or further afield during the day

It’s not known exactly when the village was founded but we do know it existed at the time of the Domesday Book. It didn’t really expand until the collieries in the area disappeared. That almost goes against what we’re used to. Normally a colliery sees a place rapidly expand. However this was predominately the site used for colliery spoil tips. When these were removed and landscaped and after much opencast coal extraction the area regained its traditional rural appeal from the 1970s onward. That led to a massive increase in housing, with most of the village being built between the 1970s and 1980s, and the population soared as a result

It has historically been associated with three names – Scargill, Powtrell and Newdigate. The Newdigate family were lords of the manor, and on Station Road is Ye Olde Cinder House, built in 1833 to celebrate the birth of Francis Parker Newdigate – the local Squire’s son. It was built from cinders which were made by burning pieces of clay dug from the nearby Mapperley Park in Mapperley.

Straw’s Bridge is a valuable open space and recreational area also known as Swan Lake, and it’s close to the disused Nutbrook Canal in the parish of WEST HALLAM.

MORLEY: Erewash Parish #10 of 14

Our trip around the most complicated parish in Erewash begins here at the Moor Farm Training Centre, right on Erewash’s boundary with the city of Derby, where Derby County train. As a football fan it’s a little hard not to mention the current struggles the Rams have off the field as of 2022, but that aside, nobody can say their training facilities are lacking

This one is comprised of a series of ancient settlements. These are identified as Brackley Gate, The Croft, Morley Smithy, Morley Moor and Church Lane but there are several other isolated places. One of those would be Broomfield Hall, located on the A608 with 450 acres of land to its name. It’s part of Derby College these days – termed the Broomfield Hall Campus if you will.

Morley Smithy owes its name to the pub as it was formerly the village smithy. It once had a thatched roof and its own brewhouse. The smithy was originally 18th century but it was rebuilt in 1914. Only the cellars from the original building remain intact. There has been a school here since 1816, but the original one, endowed by Emma Darwin of Breadsall Priory was demolished in 1910.

Church Lane is not really much to write home about. That said, there are some fine properties here. Morley certainly does property very well wherever you are within the parish. The relatively low asking price for a house was a surprise here. On entering the drive at the church you come to a 14th century cross, one of two crosses that stood in the vicinity. It stands on what was once the village green. It was restored in 1916 by a member of the Topham family

Parts of the church originated at Dale Abbey and were rescued at the dissolution, and these days the tall spire of St Matthew’s stands proudly over MORLEY.

English Countryside | Sheffield South Yorkshire #englishcountryside #sheffield #southyorkshire

WOOLLEY: Wakefield Parish #21 of 30

Split into at least four different sections, all wildly different to each other, we come today to a place that calls home, the top of a wide escarpment – the fancy term for a ridge of land that slopes down into a valley below. In this case that valley contains both the River Dearne and the M1. This escarpment is also the highest elevated piece of land East of the Pennines.

We have a main village that’s very old and retains a lot of its stone buildings thanks to the squires of the village in the 19th century – The Wentworths – who, when they acquired the land here, also gained neighbouring Notton. The two villages are pretty similar to each other – very old, with a lot of character and history to go with them.

Then a little further South on the border with Barnsley is a place which hasn’t existed for all that long. Since 2003 in fact, this part of the parish has grown and grown, built as it is on the site of a former colliery, one of the largest in all of Yorkshire. It is the principle reason why in the space of only eight years, the population of this place absolutely soared from 575 to way over 1,300.

That escarpment then gives us some nice views over the local area, before we drive down through the village of Haigh and under the Hallam Line between Sheffield and Leeds towards Junction 38 of the M1. There, we pick up the motorway and check out the services which also fall within these parish boundaries.

Plenty to look at, plenty to take in, this one is much bigger than it looks on the map. This is WOOLLEY.

Sheffield City Centre

Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England, whose name derives from the River Sheaf which runs through it. The city serves as the administrative centre of the City of Sheffield. It is historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and some of its southern suburbs were transferred from Derbyshire to the city council. It is the largest settlement in South Yorkshire.

The city is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines and the valleys of the River Don with its four tributaries: the Loxley, the Porter Brook, the Rivelin and the Sheaf. Sixty-one per cent of Sheffield's entire area is green space and a third of the city lies within the Peak District national park and is the fifth largest city in England. There are more than 250 parks, woodlands and gardens in the city, which is estimated to contain around 4.5 million trees. The city is 29 miles (47 km) south of Leeds, 32 miles (51 km) east of Manchester, and 33 miles (53 km) north of Nottingham.

DALE ABBEY: Erewash Parish #8 of 14

This is a unique parish some six miles Northeast of Derby. It’s unique because I’ve never come across a place before quite like this. It really has to be seen to be believed. The parish and the village share the same name, although the village was formerly known as Deepdale with two differing spellings. There are a ridiculous amount of landmarks for such a small place

It is historically associated with the Hollingworth family who originally came from the neighbouring village of Breadsall where they were publicans of the Old Hall Inn. The village contains the remains of an abbey founded in the 12th or 13th century, which explains its name. We can even access the site of the abbey’s remains.

The Augustinian canons moved here in 1162 from their previous home at Calke Abbey. Later groups of Premonstratensian canons were linked to both Welbeck and Tupholme. From around the year 1199, the Abbey became well established enough to survive for the next 340 years. The Abbey provided priests at Ilkeston, Heanor, Kirk Hallam and Stanton by Dale.

The Hermitage, or alternatively, the “Hermit’s Cave” can be found carved out of this sandstone cliff by a 12th-century Derby baker who wished to live a life as a recluse. It is well preserved, measuring six yards by three with a doorway, two windows, a peephole and a niche for a light. Unlike the last cave we saw (bonus points if you can remember it), we can go inside here.

Then there’s a part of Kirk Hallam, a windmill and even a colliery to discuss…and that’s before you even begin to consider Locko Park, with it’s French connection! It’s all in DALE ABBEY.
