S1 – Ep 263 – Douglas – A Town at the Confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers!
It was once again one of those days where we only arrived at our overnight accommodation in Douglas late that evening because we got caught up at all our other stops throughout the day. The next morning we got an early start so we could see as much of Douglas as we could. It was raining on-and-off all morning, but that didn't slow us down one bit! We were very impressed with this town and found it very neat and organised. The highlight was our visit to the confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers. What a spectacle! This was amazing to see and a must-visit if you have not been there before. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #douglas #hopetown

S1 – Ep 351 – Christiana – We Crossed the Wide Vaal River Again!
On our way to Christiana, we were captivated by the impressive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, witnessing vast canals supplying water to the area, a sight that pleasantly surprised us. The journey through town led us over a remarkable, long single-lane steel-girded bridge which crossed the wide Vaal River. On the other side we attempted to find the nearby rock engravings. We couldn't locate them, but on the bright side, we had to cross the bridge for a second time! Our curiosity also led us to the Christiana on the Vaal Resort, which was closed because of the recent floods. Driving through the town we were amazed by an early twentieth-century church building which was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Town Hall from a distance and we were saddened by it being burnt down due to unrest. On a more positive note, we had the opportunity to visit the well-organised school, the Christiana School for the Blind. However, on our way out of town we passed the hospital and saw that it had burnt down due to human error while renovations were being done. Despite the mixed emotions, the visit was a unique and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northwestprovince #christiana

The Incidental Tourist Explores Kimberley with Airlink
Travel blogger, Dawn Jorgensen, recently visited Kimberley with Airlink taking two full days to explore the wonders of the area.
She flew directly between Cape Town and Kimberly on this short and convenient Airlink flight route. Upon arrival in Kimberley, Dawn started her voyage in the Big Hole Complex where she peered into the deepest man made crater in the world, made a trip into the deep tunnels of a mine and walked around the vibrant old town.
Her trip continued with a visit to the McGregor Museum, St Cyprian's Cathedral, the muddy shores of Kamfers Dam and finally to the historic site where the Battle of Magersfontein took place on the 11th of December 1899.
Airlink connects you to Kimberley with direct flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg:

S1 – Ep 332 – Bedford – A Delightful Destination which Exceeded our Expectations!
Our trip to Bedford was an adventure filled with contrasts. Leaving Riebeeck East, we embarked on a 20km drive along a wet gravel road riddled with potholes, but the sight of Impala made the journey worthwhile. Surprisingly, the tar road proved to be even worse as we made our way to Bedford. However, we were richly rewarded upon arriving in this bustling yet stunning town. Driving through the main road, we were captivated by the charm that surrounded us. Our first stop at De Oude Fabreeck exceeded our expectations. It is truly a delightful destination! The furniture factory provided a fascinating glimpse into their craft, showcasing their exquisite creations. We also enjoyed the cosy ambiance of the restaurant, explored the arts and crafts center, and admired the dedicated children's area. Continuing our exploration, we visited the town's library, housed within a magnificent old building that added a touch of nostalgia to our experience. As we drove through the town, we encountered beautiful churches, well-preserved historic sites, and even a hospital in great condition. Our trip to Bedford was a delightful surprise, leaving us with cherished memories of this remarkable town. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #bedford

S1 – Ep 355 – Dealesville – Viewing the Salt Pans During an Awesome Sunset!
Our visit to Dealesville was filled with delightful surprises and warm encounters. As we embarked on our journey to the town, we were thrilled to witness a warthog crossing the road with its tail held high while running through the open field, and the sight of farming vehicles along the way added to the rural charm. Upon entering the town, we sensed a contentment and pride among the locals. On the outskirts, we discovered a stunning salt pan, initially mistaken for a dam. In our explorations, we met a gentleman who had taken it upon himself to revive the old sports complex into a beautiful wedding venue and sports facility, and he generously invited us to his renovated guest house, which we would hope to overnight at someday. The church and Voortrekker memorials provided a glimpse into the history and culture of the town. However, the presence of a military contingent left us curious as to why they were there. Departing from Dealesville, we decided to stop at the salt pans one last time. They left us in awe of their natural beauty during sunset. Inspired by the community's earnest efforts to rejuvenate and uplift their beloved town, we left the town with sweet memories of our visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #dealesville

S1 – Ep 345 – Barkly West – A Fascinating Experience and a True Treasure!
Our trip to Barkly West was filled with delightful surprises and historical wonders. As we made our way to the town, we were captivated by the sight of a picturesque lake teeming with vibrant birdlife, setting the perfect tone for our visit. Upon reaching the outskirts of the town, we saw a magnificent old steel bridge, which was constructed back in 1885 as the first bridge spanning the Vaal River. Exploring the adjacent building, which was once a Museum and before that a Tollhouse, was a fascinating experience, despite us being disheartened by its vandalised state. Continuing our exploration, we ventured to the abandoned caravan park, a relic of days gone by. The train station proved to be another highlight, as we encountered a very long train parked, with the driver catching a well-deserved nap. However, the true treasure was discovering the Parish Church of St Mary, a gem from 1871. Stepping inside, we felt privileged to immerse ourselves in the rich history contained within its hallowed walls. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #barklywest

S1 – Ep 344 – Kimberley – The Impressive Sentimental Journey which Surprised us!
Our visit to Kimberley began with a late arrival, but we wasted no time and dropped off our bags before heading out for dinner. The Mohawk Spur provided a delightful dining experience with delicious food. We knew that Kimberley had so much to offer, so we carefully selected a few places to explore the following morning. We marveled at the Cecil John Rhodes statue, paid our respects at the war memorials, and were left in awe by the breathtaking Anglican Cathedral, its size truly mind-blowing. A sentimental journey took us to St Patrick's CBC, where my father and uncle had attended school years ago. The impressive institution surprised us with its greatness. Of course, our visit wouldn't have been complete without a trip to the iconic Big Hole, a colossal highlight that left us amazed. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kimberley

S1 – Ep 348 – Warrenton – A Wonderfully Operational Train Station!
Our trip to Warrenton in the Northern Cape was an awesome experience, despite arriving in the dark once again and just as loadshedding struck. We indulged in delicious Portuguese food from O Galo, before settling into our accommodation. The next morning, we were finally able to witness the beauty of the place, and it did not disappoint. After a delightful cup of coffee, we made our way to the Vaal River, a mere 200 meters from our unit, and were awestruck by its stunning vistas. Exploring the town was a delight, as we encountered a charming old steam engine, the historic old bridge, a wonderfully operational train station, and the intriguing old blockhouse near the railway bridge. Overall, our visit to Warrenton was a fantastic experience filled with captivating sights and memorable moments. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #warrenton #vaalriver

S1 – Ep 343 – Jacobsdal – A Town Showcasing its Rich History!
Our visit to Jacobsdal was an adventure that made the five-hour drive completely worthwhile. Upon arrival, we were captivated by the stunning church, which held a remarkable secret: it had served as a hospital during the historic Anglo-Boer War. The sight of a bullethole in the church door vividly reminded us of the intense conflicts that once raged in this area. As we ventured further, we stumbled upon a blockhouse on the outskirts of the town, leaving us in awe of this town that was showcasing its rich history. However, it was the charming old houses, particularly the original farmhouse, that truly stole our hearts. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #jacobsdal
