--------------- BURKES LOOKOUT The views over Melbourne and the Bay from Burke’s Lookout in the Dandenong Ranges are gorgeous, it is a top viewpoint Mt Dandenong, but it does involve a short walk or even a long walk if you choose to take your time and spend a day in the Dandenongs exploring some beautiful walking tracks. The other nearby viewpoint to visit is Skyhigh, Mt Dandenong.
The area at Burkes Lookout is not set up for groups, no seats, picnic tables, or even a flat area to sit, visitors need to walk along Kyeema Track to reach the best viewpoint. To make your visit into a good hike in the Dandenongs, read about how to get here via the Fire Trail / Glasgow Track, the steepest and hardest climb in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. -------------- THE DANDENONG RANGES The Dandenong Ranges (commonly just The Dandenongs) are a set of low mountain ranges in Victoria, Australia, approximately 35 km (22 mi) east of the state capital Melbourne. A minor branch of the Great Dividing Range, the Dandenongs consist mostly of rolling hills, rising to 633 m (2,077 ft) at Mount Dandenong, as well as steeply weathered valleys and gullies covered in thick temperate rainforest, predominantly of tall mountain ash trees and dense ferny undergrowth. The namesake Dandenong Creek and most of its left-bank tributaries (particularly the Eumemmerring Creek) originate from headwaters in these mountain ranges. Two of Melbourne's most important storage reservoirs, the Cardinia and Silvan Reservoir, are also located within the Dandenongs.
After European settlement in the Port Phillip Bay region, the range was used as a major local source of timber for Melbourne. The ranges were popular with day-trippers from the 1870s onwards. Much of the Dandenongs were protected as parklands as early as 1882, and by 1987 these parklands were amalgamated to form the Dandenong Ranges National Park, which was subsequently expanded in 1997. Travel Itineraries: 📍Burkes Lookout- The best views of Melbourne from the Dandenong Ranges, day or night this is a spectacular walk. New Year’s Eve at Burkes Lookout has become a very popular place to be. It gets really crowded, though the atmosphere is usually always great.
Walk Notes * Total Distance: Just under 1 km * Walking time: 20 minutes return * Easy grade walk. * Parking available on Osprey Road (off Ridge Road). This is a very short road. * Public Transport: Bus service along Ridge Road, Mt Dandenong from Croydon or Ferntree Gully. Ask the driver to let you off at Osprey Road/Kyeema Memorial. * No toilets. Nearest public toilets: Olinda or Sky High, Mt Dandenong * Pram-Friendly though can be a bit bumpy. A suitable pram for rougher tracks is ideal. * Depending on the wheelchair type, it may be possible to use this track.
📍Dandenong Ranges National Park - A short 1.5 hour drive from the city. Dandenong Ranges National Park is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape. Parks Victoria respects the deep and continuing connection that Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters, and we recognise their ongoing role in caring for Country. - The forested slopes of the Dandenong Ranges are a place of tranquil forest walks, quaint hilltop towns and charismatic animals such as lyrebirds and wallabies. Conquer the famous 1000 Steps, discover Olinda Falls and enjoy commanding views over Melbourne and the Yarra Valley. - The Dandenong Ranges is a rainforest getaway on Melbourne's doorstep. A short drive or train ride from the city you will find steep volcanic hills covered in stands of the world's tallest flowering tree, the Mountain Ash. Living among the greenery are wallabies, lyrebirds, wombats and the Powerful Owl so please ensure you leave your dogs at home to avoid disturbing the local wildlife.
📍10,000 Steps- Take an energetic walk up the 1000 Steps from Ferntree Gully Picnic Area and learn about its poignant association with Australia's Second World War veterans and the Kokoda Track Campaign.

Things to do in the Yarra ranges and Yarra Valley, Melbourne in a day.
Today we visit the Yarra ranges in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. We also visit the Yarra Valley, Healesville and Healesville Sanctuary with its many native Australian animals, including echidnas and koalas. We drive through the majestic Black Spur forest, then on to Marysville and the spectacular Steavenson Falls. The area is famous for its towering mountain ash trees, (eucaliptus regnans) amongst the tallest trees in the world, as are the California redwoods, in East Warburton. We drive through the snow capped Mount Donna Buang, the first along the Australian Alps. Lower down the mountain is the mysterious Rainforest Gallery, The Yarra Valley Wine Region is world famous. Here we visit Hellen's Hill, cellar door, for some amazing cheese and wine tasting. Finally we visit the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery, a chocolate factory, with an amazing variety of chocolate. Make sure you try the free samples at the door.
