Tsodilo Hills - The 10 of the Best Places to Visit in Botswana

Tsodilo Hills is a spiritual outdoor art gallery, showcasing more than 4,000 ancient San Bushmen rock paintings. There are around 400 sites depicting hunting scenes, ritual dances and typical safari animals. Some rock art dates back more than 20,000 years and archaeologists have ascertained that people lived in this area as far back as 100,000 years ago. The San Bushmen believe this sacred area is the site of the first creation of man and a resting place for spirits of the dead. Not surprisingly, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can expect to hike the three main hills, with the assistance of local guides. There is a basic campsite and a small but informative museum on site.

Vredefort Dome

Vredefort Dome - South Africa''s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Confirmed as a UNESCO site in 2005, Vredefort Dome is located approximately 75 miles (120 kilometers) southwest of Johannesburg. Despite its confusing name, the dome is actually a crater, caused by a meteorite impact some 2,023 million years ago. It is thought to be one of the oldest and largest meteorite craters on Earth, and provides evidence of the biggest single energy release in the planet’s history - an event that caused major evolutionary changes and helped shape the world as we know it today. The Vredefort Dome is especially important because it is the only known meteorite crater with a fully intact geological profile. Today, the crater boasts considerable scenic beauty and incredible animal and plant life. Visitors can take part in a number of activities, including hiking, hot air ballooning, river rafting and abseiling. .

VREDEFORT DOME DAY TOUR

Winter is the best time to visit the Vredefort Dome as the days are mild and the long drive and walks are tolerable. We had visitors from New York and St Petersburg, Russia, on this day tour. One only gets to appreciate the size and scale of the Dome when trying to pack the whole story into one day. Invevitably the choice of sites to visit is selective. But we did see some of the finest examples of meteorite impact melt in the rocks, and got a good look at the spectacular scenery of the Bergland - the mountain collar that surrounds the Dome core. Our New York visitors missed the afternoon visit to Bushman etchings and the gold mine tunnel, but it's all here in the video! - Graeme. impact@vdome.co.za +27 56 8181814

EARTH'S LARGEST CRATER - VREDEFORT DOME HIKING | Parys, South Africa

The Vredefort Dome (Crater) is currently the largest and one of the oldest known meteor impact sites in the world. It is South Africa's seventh World Heritage Site and this is largely due to the research scientist from Wits University, including Dr. Rodger Hart. One hundred kilometers south west of Johannesburg, South Africa are the towns of Vredefort and Parys, the latter lying next to the Vaal river. The towns are a short deviation from the N1 highway to Cape Town. In an arc to the north and west of the towns is a partial ring of hills, some 70 kilometers in diameter. The hills are centered on Vredefort. The ring of hills and the area within them is known as the Vredefort Dome.his is the biggest meteorite impact that geologists have yet found on Earth and it is nearly twice as big as the impact that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. This makes it a site of great importance for scientists. The Vredefort Dome is a beautiful tourism place situated approximately 100 km from Johannesburg.

The structure was formed 2020 million years ago when an asteroid of 10 kilometers in diameter collided with the earth at a speed of 30 000km/h. The Vredefort Dome is South Africa's 7th World Heritage Site. The Vaal River which flows through the crater is the oldest river in the world though not nearly as old as the crater. A Great Expotition to... Vredefort, South Africa - A Drive About

A drive around Vredefort, South Africa - a small town situated on the southern edge of one of the largest verified impact structures on Earth. The drive is around the main north-western part of the town proper; afterwards there is a collection of photos that show off the impact ridges to the far north, followed by photographs of the town's old cemetary. At the end of the video, there is some information regarding the Vredefort impact 2 billion years ago.

Wiki:
The town was established in 1876 on a farm called Visgat, on the Vredefort impact structure, the largest and oldest visible bolide impact crater in the world (with a diameter of 300 kilometres (190 mi)). It was this approximately 10-kilometre (6.2 mi) wide bolide that led to the preservation of the gold-bearing reefs of the Free State some 2.02 billion years ago. The town's name, which translates to peace fort in Afrikaans and Dutch, was derived from the peaceful conclusion to a threatened war between the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. The British built a concentration camp here during the Second Boer War to house Boer women and children.

The Vredefort Dome is currently the largest and one of the oldest known asteroid impact sites in the world. It is South Africa's seventh World Heritage Site and its status is largely due to the efforts of research scientists from Wits University

Vredefort Impact Site

The Vredefort Impact Site, located in South Africa, is a geological marvel that bears witness to an ancient cataclysmic event. This site is the result of a colossal asteroid impact that occurred over two billion years ago, making it the oldest and largest confirmed impact structure on Earth. The impact's immense energy created a crater over 300 kilometers (186 miles) in diameter, which has eroded and changed over time but still retains its unique circular shape. Today, the Vredefort Impact Site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, not only for its geological significance but also for the insights it provides into the Earth's dynamic history and the forces that have shaped our planet. Visitors can explore its breathtaking landscapes and learn about the Earth's tumultuous past at this extraordinary location.

Point of impact

Most of us know that Vredefort Dome has something to do with a meteorite that hit Earth a very long time ago, but not much else. Is the crater worth a visit? Leon-Ben Lamprecht travelled to Parys, the unofficial capital of the Vredefort Dome, and found there are lots of activities to keep holidaymakers happy. And yes, if you're interested in geology, you can learn all about the history and geology of this fascinating region.

10 Things to do in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province

South Africa’s ‘wild’ province, the Eastern Cape features expanses of untouched beach, bush and forest. It is an area with some enticing attractions – pristine beaches, abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery.

Its natural diversity is impressive: the Eastern Cape incorporates parts of all seven ecological zones that occur in South Africa. It also features all three of the country's biodiversity regions, which is further enhanced by its 820km of untamed coastline. This ensures an assortment of plant and animal species, including the Big Five, abundant birdlife and rich marine life (including 27 species of whales and dolphins).

The province offers something for everyone: for the adrenaline addict there’s tubing down the Storm’s River Gorge, skydiving in Grahamstown and taking the plunge off the Bloukrans Bridge on the world’s highest commercially operated bridge bungee; outdoor enthusiasts can try spot the Big Seven or enjoy pristine beaches.
