The structure was formed 2020 million years ago when an asteroid of 10 kilometers in diameter collided with the earth at a speed of 30 000km/h. The Vredefort Dome is South Africa's 7th World Heritage Site. The Vaal River which flows through the crater is the oldest river in the world though not nearly as old as the crater. The Vaal River is a playground for white water rafters and kayakers. The river rafting trips are offered on the most popular rafting stretch in South Africa.Hiking trails guarantee interesting sights e.g. undamaged Bushman rock paintings and remains of stone villages of indigenous tribes who lived in the Vredefort Dome region during the Iron Age can be seen on these routes.Bird watching the Vredefort Dome-area is truly a birdwatcher's paradise.

EARTH'S LARGEST CRATER - VREDEFORT DOME HIKING | Parys, South Africa
The Vredefort Dome (Crater) is currently the largest and one of the oldest known meteor impact sites in the world. It is South Africa's seventh World Heritage Site and this is largely due to the research scientist from Wits University, including Dr. Rodger Hart. One hundred kilometers south west of Johannesburg, South Africa are the towns of Vredefort and Parys, the latter lying next to the Vaal river.The towns are a short deviation from the N1 highway to Cape Town. In an arc to the north and west of the towns is a partial ring of hills, some 70 kilometers in diameter. The hills are centered on Vredefort. The ring of hills and the area within them is known as the Vredefort Dome.his is the biggest meteorite impact that geologists have yet found on Earth and it is nearly twice as big as the impact that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. This makes it a site of great importance for scientists.The Vredefort Dome is a beautiful tourism place situated approximately 100 km from Johannesburg.

Confirmed as a UNESCO site in 2005, Vredefort Dome is located approximately 75 miles (120 kilometers) southwest of Johannesburg. Despite its confusing name, the dome is actually a crater, caused by a meteorite impact some 2,023 million years ago. It is thought to be one of the oldest and largest meteorite craters on Earth, and provides evidence of the biggest single energy release in the planet’s history - an event that caused major evolutionary changes and helped shape the world as we know it today. The Vredefort Dome is especially important because it is the only known meteorite crater with a fully intact geological profile. Today, the crater boasts considerable scenic beauty and incredible animal and plant life. Visitors can take part in a number of activities, including hiking, hot air ballooning, river rafting and abseiling. .

Winter is the best time to visit the Vredefort Dome as the days are mild and the long drive and walks are tolerable. We had visitors from New York and St Petersburg, Russia, on this day tour. One only gets to appreciate the size and scale of the Dome when trying to pack the whole story into one day. Invevitably the choice of sites to visit is selective. But we did see some of the finest examples of meteorite impact melt in the rocks, and got a good look at the spectacular scenery of the Bergland - the mountain collar that surrounds the Dome core. 2 Billion Year Old Asteroid Crater: Vredefort Dome, South Africa
Imagine an asteroid the size of a mountain heading for Earth at a speed of 20km per second. Packing more punch than multiple nuclear bombs, it penetrates 17km deep into the Earth and leaves an impact crater of 300 kilometers across. Vredefort Dome is a World Heritage Site, located 125 km south west of Johannesburg, Rob Trautmann, Chairperson of N12 Treasure Route Association tells TravelMole.
In its wake, pulverized rock powder rained down on the Earth for months, blotting out the sun. But, curiously, scientists speculate that the incident may have increased the planet's oxygen levels to the point of making life possible.
Some 200-million years ago the Vaal River began flowing through the Vredefort Crater, attracting a passing parade of ancient San people, followed by the Sotho, the Tswana, Boer and Brit, and gold prospectors in search of personal fortunes.
Ironically, Vredefort Dome has been transformed over time into a tranquil sanctuary for body and soul where a plethora of leisure activities are enjoyed. B&B establishments, conference centres, and activities that allow adventure seekers to test their bodies against the Vredefort Dome's challenging geographical features. Visitors climb its peaks and abseil its rock faces, explore its mine tunnels and canoe the rapids of the Vaal. In between, they visit Iron and Stone Age sites, granite quarries, and shop for antiques in nearby Parys.

A drive around Vredefort, South Africa - a small town situated on the southern edge of one of the largest verified impact structures on Earth. The drive is around the main north-western part of the town proper; afterwards there is a collection of photos that show off the impact ridges to the far north, followed by photographs of the town's old cemetary. The town was established in 1876 on a farm called Visgat, on the Vredefort impact structure, the largest and oldest visible bolide impact crater in the world (with a diameter of 300 kilometres (190 mi)). It was this approximately 10-kilometre (6.2 mi) wide bolide that led to the preservation of the gold-bearing reefs of the Free State some 2.02 billion years ago. The town's name, which translates to peace fort in Afrikaans and Dutch, was derived from the peaceful conclusion to a threatened war between the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. The British built a concentration camp here during the Second Boer War to house Boer women and children.
