Villanueva State Park - New Mexico State Park
Villanueva State Park was the Two Tired Teachers final New Mexico State Park. Located between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, it seemed the perfect park to go to either or both cities.
The campsites are well shaded on the level where we stayed. The ones up higher have fewer or no trees. The picnic tables are covered with adobe structures to keep the sun off.
This pretty park is made up of several small loops. Unlike many TX state parks, the loops may have some sites with water and electricity, some with water only, and some with no hook ups. The campsites on the bluff have water nearby. And one loop is for tent camping.
Trails run throughout Villanueva State Park. A nice easy trail runs through the campground to the Pecos River, which runs through the park.. The trail on the mountain side of the park is more strenuous and the elevation does increase as you climb up the trail. Other trails are also in the park.
The park does have a playground with swings and a slide. It also has structures that kids can climb on.
The town of Villanueva is very small. A store is in town, but it looked as if the supplies would be limited. Be sure you have adequate supplies because the nearest town is probably an hour away.
One word of caution is about the drive to the park. One part of the small road is extremely winding. That part is only about a mile and a half long, but it feels much longer.
A sign on I 40 directs you to the exit and to the park. The Two Tired Teachers enjoyed our time at Villanueva State Park in Villanueva, New Mexico.

Guide to New Mexico State Parks
Affordable, picturesque, and often filled with amenities, New Mexico’s state park campgrounds are ideal for RVers and tent campers alike. You can find campsites with hookups for only $14 a night and dry camping sites for merely $10 a night. Plus, if you purchase an annual camping permit, your nightly fees are waived for the year.
Here are a few state parks to check out if you’re looking for a place to camp in New Mexico:
Rockhound State Park. Each RV site is spacious and features a picnic table and covered shelter. The campground has one loop with hookups and one without, making this a great spot, no matter your camping needs.
City of Rocks State Park. Featuring stunning volcanic rock formations, this campground offers 50 sites spread throughout the park’s unique geologic landscapes. While some sites are first come, first served, others can be reserved online.
Cimarron Canyon State Park. Camp alongside the Cimarron River at this northern New Mexico state park. There are no hookups, but the campground does offer potable water and restrooms.
Oliver Lee Memorial State Park. Less than 30 miles from White Sands National Park, this state park offers expansive views, hiking trails, a visitor center, and more. Most of the campsites can accommodate rigs longer than 30 feet, and each site has a gravel pad.

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS. Prettiest colonial city in MEXICO & great things to do around the city
San Cristobal de las Casas: probably our favourite colonial old city in Mexico, and defenitely a special one! It's way colder here than in any other parts we visited, so we suddenly needed sweaters and scarfs. When the sun is out, the city gets even more stunning and you'll have plenty of opportunity to soak up some sun on the beautiful inside terraces and gardens. Enjoy the city, expect to find some amazing food and explore the amazing surroundings!

Aztec Ruins is about 1000 years old. It is the remains of an ancestral puebloan (formerly known as the Anasazi) great house. It is a National Monument and maintained my the US National Parks Service. Aztec Ruins was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for Chaco Canyon.
The nearest big town is Farmington, NM although the towns of Bloomfield and Aztec, NM are also close by.
