Bergamo (accent is on the first syllable, i.e. bèrgamo , Lombard Bèrghem , Latin Bergomum ) is an Italian city in the region of Lombardy , the capital of the province of the same name . It lies about 40 km northeast of Milan in the foothills of the Alps . It has 121,200 inhabitants. The city consists of two parts: the Città alta (Upper City), a medieval hilltop town surrounded by 17th-century defensive walls, and the Città bassa (Lower City), founded in the early 20th century . Both parts of the city are connected by a network of streets and a cable car, which is in operation all week.
South of the city center is the Orio Al Serio International Airport , which is mainly used by low-cost airlines . Pope John XXIII studied here in the seminary .
City and monuments Citta alta, the Upper City of Bergamo, is protected by walls with sixteen bastions . The center of the Upper Town is on Piazza Vecchia . In the southwestern part of the square stands the Palazzo della Ragione , built between 1538 and 1554. The main hall of the palace is decorated with wall paintings from the 14th to 16th centuries. Next to the palace stands the Torre Civica , a defensive tower from the 12th century. On the north side of the square is the Renaissance building of the Bibliateaca Civica library from the 17th century. Piazza Vecchia is connected to the south by Piazza Duomo with the Duomo di Bergamo from the 17th century. However, the three-nave church of Santa Maria Maggiore is considered a more significant buildingfrom the 12th to the 14th century The Cappella Colleoni chapel, a Renaissance building with a richly decorated facade, directly adjoins the church . To the east of Piazza Vecchia on a rocky outcrop lies the Rocca fortress from the first half of the 14th century. At the opposite end of the Upper Town, on Piazza Cittadella, we find the Cittadella palace building from 1355. Currently, there is an archaeological and natural history museum here. In the square, we pass under the Torre della Campanela from the same year. The Upper Walled City of Bergamo was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017 together with other sites under the unified inscription Venetian defensive structures from the 15th to 17th centuries: Stato da Terra - Western Stato da Mar.
Citta bassa, the Lower Town, has its center in Piazza Matteoti . To the northeast is the building of the Gaetano Donizetti theater from the end of the 18th century, the Baroque church of Santi Bartolomeo e Stefano from the first half of the 17th century. and the church of S. Spirito from 1525. However, the main center of the Lower Town lies on the shopping street Via XX Settembre with a number of luxury shops. The strongly fortified city of Bergamo is not far from Milan in Northern Italy. At the point where the Brembo and Serio rivers enter the Po Plain.
The hill of Bergamo is an ancient cultural site. Celts settled here, followed by Romans, Lombards and Franks. The inhabitants resisted Barbarossa.
Since 1887, a funicular railway leads up to the old town. The Piazza Vecchia, together with the Piazza Del Duomo, has formed the centre of the upper town since the 15th century.
Basilica, Baptistery, and Colleoni chapel, which are right next to the Cathedral. Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important church in the city.
The city's second funicular railway continues steeply up to the fortress of San Viglio. Only the remains of the massive foundation walls are left of the fortress, but evidence of the former military might can still be seen when walking around.
The funicular takes us back to the upper town. Azzone Visconti initially completed the fortress just when Milan and Venice began to fight for supremacy. But the Venezians were victorious. Then Napoleon appeared, followed by the Habsburgians and the kingdom of Sardinia. Garibaldi did not move in until 1859.
Italy was united and the city of Bergamo has survived all turmoil and regencies without harm.
