MAP OF MOLDOVA AND TRANSNISTRIA

Moldova officially the Republic of Moldova (Romanian: Republica Moldova) is a Sovereign State in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south with which a deal was struck in 2005 for access to the Black Sea, ending Moldova's landlocked status. The unrecognised, breakaway region of Transnistria lies across the Dniester on the country's eastern border with Ukraine. The capital and largest city is Chișinău.

Most of Moldovan territory was a part of the Principality of Moldavia from the 14th century until 1812, when it was ceded to the Russian Empire by the Ottoman Empire (to which Moldavia was a vassal state) and became known as Bessarabia. In 1856, southern Bessarabia was returned to Moldavia, which three years later united with Wallachia to form Romania, but Russian rule was restored over the whole of the region in 1878. During the 1917 Russian Revolution, Bessarabia briefly became an autonomous state within the Russian Republic, known as the Moldavian Democratic Republic. In February 1918, the Moldavian Democratic Republic declared independence and then integrated into Romania later that year following a vote of its assembly. The decision was disputed by Soviet Russia, which in 1924 established, within the Ukrainian SSR, a Moldavian autonomous republic (MASSR) on partially Moldovan-inhabited territories to the east of Bessarabia.

In 1940, as a consequence of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union, leading to the creation of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (Moldavian SSR), which included the greater part of Bessarabia and the westernmost strip of the former MASSR (east of the Dniester River). On 27 August 1991, as the dissolution of the Soviet Union was underway, the Moldavian SSR declared independence

Scenery in Moldova, with Dniester River

Beach on the shore of Dniester River near Vadul lui Vodă
Moldova lies between latitudes 45° and 49° N, and mostly between meridians 26° and 30° E (a small area lies east of 30°). The total land area is 33,851 km2 (13,070 sq mi)

The largest part of the country (around 88% of the area) lies in Bessarabia region, between Prut and Dniester rivers, while a narrow strip in the east is located in Transnistria (east of the Dniester). The western border of Moldova is formed by the Prut river, which joins the Danube before flowing into the Black Sea. Moldova has access to the Danube for only about 480 m (1,575 ft), and Giurgiulești is the only Moldovan port on the Danube. In the east, the Dniester is the main river, flowing through the country from north to south, receiving the waters of Răut, Bîc, Ichel, Botna. Ialpug flows into one of the Danube limans, while Cogâlnic into the Black Sea chain of limans.

The country is landlocked, though it is close to the Black Sea; at its closest point it is separated from the Dniester Liman, an estuary of the Black Sea, by only 3 km of Ukrainian territory. While most of the country is hilly, elevations never exceed 430 m (1,411 ft) – the highest point being the Bălănești Hill. Moldova's hills are part of the Moldavian Plateau, which geologically originate from the Carpathian Mountains. Its subdivisions in Moldova include the Dniester Hills (Northern Moldavian Hills and Dniester Ridge), the Moldavian Plain (Middle Prut Valley and Bălți Steppe), and the Central Moldavian Plateau (Ciuluc-Soloneț Hills, Cornești Hills—Codri Massive, Codri meaning forests—Lower Dniester Hills, Lower Prut Valley, and Tigheci Hills). In the south, the country has a small flatland, the Bugeac Plain. The territory of Moldova east of the river Dniester is split between parts of the Podolian Plateau, and parts of the Eurasian Steppe.

The country's main cities are the capital Chișinău, in the centre of the country, Tiraspol (in the eastern region of Transnistria), Bălți (in the north) and Bender (in the south-east). Comrat is the administrative centre of Gagauzia. go here

Picturesque cycling weekend at Rosia, Bihor county

Rosia is a small village in the Bihor county, Romania. It's a picturesque and super quiet place where you can really recharge your batteries. Rosia is situated in a karst region, so there are also plenty of caves you can visit.

Together with Biciclez.ro, a special kind of travel agency, specialized in outdoor active holidays, we spent three days here, packed with outdoor activities. Our base camp was Traditionalcasa.ro rustic guest house. It's something special, you really feel in the middle of the countryside, with nature knocking at your door. Another great thing here is the food, cooked on the spot by the locals.

Friday we started with a trip at Dobos cave, a special cave you can visit only accompanied by a guide from Aventuratrekking.ro, an organization that takes care of these places. Then we set off on e-bikes for a short but intense bike trip through Cutilor gorges. It proved to be quite challenging. Because the rain from previous days, the river was quite tumultuous and we had to cross it many times. Usually though, you can cycle here without getting wet. At Cutilor gorges you can also find a via ferrata, which is pretty cool.

The e-mtbs we used were also special. Rented from Evolutionbike.ro - Specialized Shop Oradea, this super-bikes allowed us to cover the ground in half the time, while still putting some serious watts to the pedals. Obviously, if you wanted to take it easy, you just had to push the button, and everything was much easier.

Saturday we took the cars and went for another e-mtb trip, this time with a longer and harder route. Highlight of the trip was the picnic on the hillside, setup for us halfway. It was just so good to taste the food made locally exactly there, on the hill where we stopped for a break. Back at the guest house on top of the hill, we gave the bikes a good wash then we just winded down near the camp fire, with a glass of palinca and of course, feasting on a marvelous steaming goulash that was just waiting for us.

Sunday we started off on bikes, straight from the doorstep of our guest house, for another e-mtb trip. Besides pedaling, we also visited some special places, like the Water Mill in Rosia. There you will find Gheorghe Burtic, the owner and the miller that actually lives there. He will explain to you how the mill works, powered by water. But the nicest thing is that, for a small fee, he will sing using his old horn-violin, a Romanian specific musical instrument, based on the original design of the Stroh violin or Stroviol.

We continued and after some miles, we ended up at Lazuri gorges, a really gorgeous place. You can admire this gorges from the balcony above, where we stopped for a break. It's a truly beautiful place, where you can stop and live the moment.

After Lazuri we returned to the guest house, then set off again to visit another cave. This time we stopped at the Crystal Cave within the Farcu mine. This caves were accidentally discovered while miners were digging in the Farcu mine. This mine is totally special because it's the only one in Romania where you can find calcite crystals nearby, within reach (it's illegal to touch them, by the way). Otherwise, to see calcite crystals, you have to be a speleologist and venture deep inside caves.

Our trip ended with a stop at the Soimus trout farm, where we had lunch. It's a well known place in the area, and I really recommend it. The trout is fabulous, and it's grown right there, near the farm.

If you want to book a trip in this region, get in touch with Biciclez.ro. E-bikes will be provided by Evolutionbike.ro.

You can also get a 10% discount if you use freerider2021 promo code, when you order your adventure.

You can read the entire story here. It's in Romanian, but you can try Google Translate

Târgoviște - Dâmbovița, România

Târgoviște is a city in Romania, being the county seat of the Dâmbovița County. It is situated on the right bank of the Ialomiţa River.

Târgoviște has a population of 73 964 making it the 26th largest city in Romania.

One of the most important cities in the history of Wallachia, it was its capital between early 15th century and 16th century.

In the 14th century, the capital of Wallachia was Curtea de Argeș, however, due to Târgoviște's economic growth, toward the end of the century, it became a secondary residence of the Wallachian hospodar.
In 1396, Bavarese traveler Johann Schiltberger mentions both Curtea de Argeș and Târgoviște as capitals of Wallachia.

Vlad III Dracula (the Impaler) later added the Chindia Tower, now a symbol of the city.

As the capital of Wallachia, Târgoviște faced numerous sieges and invasions. In 1395, it was sieged and set on fire by Bayezid I.
In 1457, the townsfolk of Târgoviște were punished by Vlad III Dracula for their involvement in the assassination of his brother: the elite of city was killed, while the young people were sent to work at his Poenari Castle.

The Ottoman invasion of 1462 did not reach the city, being prevented by Vlad III through the The Night Attack.

In 1597, the Hajduks of Mihai Viteazul and Starina Novak fought and won a decisive battle against the Ottoman Empire in Târgoviște.

Târgoviște was the site of the trial and execution of Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena in December 1989.
