On 10 June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne in Nazi-occupied France was destroyed, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built nearby after the war, but French president Charles de Gaulle ordered the original maintained as a permanent memorial and museum.
In February 1944, the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich was stationed in the Southern French town of Valence-d'Agen, north of Toulouse, waiting to be resupplied with new equipment and fresh troops. Following the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944, the division was ordered north to help stop the Allied advance. One of its units was the 4th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment (Der Führer). Its staff included regimental commander SS-Standartenführer Sylvester Stadler, SS-Sturmbannführer Adolf Diekmann commanding the 1st Battalion and SS-Sturmbannführer Otto Weidinger, Stadler's designated successor who was with the regiment for familiarisation. Command passed to Weidinger on 14 June.
Early on the morning of 10 June 1944, Diekmann informed Weidinger that he had been approached by two members of the Milice, a collaborator paramilitary force of the Vichy Regime. They claimed that a Waffen-SS officer was being held prisoner by the Resistance in Oradour-sur-Vayres, a nearby village. The captured officer was claimed to be SS-Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe, commander of the 2nd SS Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion (also part of Das Reich division). He may have been captured by the Maquis du Limousin the day before. Stadler ordered Diekmann to have the mayor choose thirty people to be hostages in exchange for Kämpfe.
On 10 June, Diekmann's battalion sealed off Oradour-sur-Glane and ordered everyone within to assemble in the village square to have their identity papers examined. This included six non-residents who happened to be bicycling through the town when the SS unit arrived. The women and children were locked in the church, and the village was looted. The men were led to six barns and sheds, where machine guns were already in place.
According to a survivor's account, the SS men then began shooting, aiming for their legs. When victims were unable to move, the SS men covered them with fuel and set the barns on fire. Only six men managed to escape. One of them was later seen walking down a road and was shot dead. In all, 190 Frenchmen died.
The SS men next proceeded to the church and placed an incendiary device beside it. When it was ignited, women and children tried to escape through the doors and windows, only to be met with machine-gun fire. 247 women and 205 children died in the brutal attack. The only survivor was 47-year-old Marguerite Rouffanche. She escaped through a rear sacristy window, followed by a young woman and child.[3] All three were shot, two of them fatally. Rouffanche crawled to some pea bushes and remained hidden overnight until she was found and rescued the next morning. About twenty villagers had fled Oradour-sur-Glane as soon as the SS unit had appeared. That night, the village was partially razed.

The spa town of Evaux les Bains
In this video clip, come and discover the mighty rise of thermalism in Evaux-les-Bains! A traditional activity that characterises the town, thermalism in particular has influenced the development of the town and its architecture in the 19th century.
The square in front of the church of Evaux-les-Bains carries the name and the bust sculpture of Armand Fourot, who largely contributed to the rise of thermalism in the city in the 19th century First, he was mayor of the town, then general counsellor and finally MP of the Creuse region. He was also behind the Paris-Ussel railway line initiative, which served Evaux thanks to the construction of the Tardes Viaduct. From 1831, the formation of a bathing club or Société des Bains, the construction of a part of the modern-day spa facilities, and then of the Grand Hotel a few years later, brought new economic activity to Evaux. It was later on in history from 1885, with the inauguration of the railroad and the station, that the spa therapy of Evaux enjoyed its glory days with the arrival of the train and its coaches of travellers in search of treatment! This mighty rise of thermalism naturally influenced the landscape and the architecture of the town. Multiple hotels were built to accommodate the flood of people taking to the waters: the Grand Hotel de la Fontaine is a perfect example. From 1850 onwards, some of the spa's faithful following wanted a pied à terre of their own in Evaux. They had villas built in keeping with the aesthetic style of spa architecture, characterised in particular by the use of red and white bricks, sometimes using yellow too, in alternating geometric patterns. Little by little, these large multicoloured houses with large openings of various shapes began to appear in the once medieval town centre. Many feature balconies with wrought iron or cast iron railings in the Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles. Their front doors are protected by elegant awnings and their overhanging roofs supported by wooden brackets give them a charming finish.

Driving in France: Autoroute A20 E9 & A89 E70 from Brive-la-Gaillarde to Ussel
In this video you can ride along on Autoroutes A20 E9 and A89 E70 from Brive-la-Gaillarde to Ussel in central France. Brive is a larger city on the A20 and is where the A20 and newer A89 Autoroutes meet. The A89 is a 472-km toll road with most segments having been built and opened in this century.
The A20 is a bit older and similar in length (406 kilometers). It runs from Vierzon (North) to Montauban (South) and is one of the few North-South corridors in France along with the A10, A75 and A7 (Route du Soleil). The region around Brive is quite pretty featuring many glowing hills and old towns worth visiting. I spent a summer here about 10 years ago.
The origins of Meymac date back to the foundation of its abbey. All that remains today of the old religious precinct are the abbey’s church and the adjoining monastic buildings. Watch this video to see the construction and its history.
Founded in around 1085 by Viscount Archambaud III of Comborn, the Benedictine priory at Meymac was emancipated from Uzerche Abbey, to which it had previously been tied, and became an abbey in its own right in 1146. The community prospered thanks to the generosity of the Viscounts of Comborn, and later of Ventadour, and also thanks to pilgrimages made to visit the relics of Saint Léger. Built between the beginning of the 12th and 13th centuries, the abbey church lies in the shape of a classic Latinate cross, nestled at the heart of the buildings. The upper church comprises an apse and two apsidioles and a bell tower is located above the portico entrance. In around 1350, during the Hundred Years War, the abbey was plundered and burned to the ground. It would be three centuries before any restoration work would take place, with the arrival of the Benedictine monks from Saint Maur between 1669 and 1690. These monks were extremely devout. Besides the church, almost all of the buildings you still see today come from the time of the restoration works. As you can see in this 17th century engraving, the monks probably planned to create a galleried cloister, but it was ultimately never built, while the hospice, added in 1681 to take in the destitute and deprived, is not depicted in this drawing. The southern wing is where all of the living quarters were to be found, including the refectory and kitchen on the ground floor, and an infirmary, shared rooms and dormitories on the upper floors. The east wing held the chapter house, where the monks gathered to makedecisions, as well as a dormitory, a library and a sacristy, where valuable objects of worship were kept. The congregation was dispersed during the Revolution when the last of the monks left the abbey. The portico over the cloister was destroyed, as well as everything that made up the abbey enclosure. Nowadays the abbey buildings belong to the local council, and are host to a contemporary arts centre, and a museum of archeology and cultural heritage.

Le lac est situé en France, entre les communes de Roche-le-Peyroux et Saint-Victour, dans le département de la Corrèze (19), dans le Massif central, en région Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Cette retenue de 57 hectares, 7 kilomètres de long, est établie sur la Diège.
Mis à part le site du pont Rouge D979, les accès sont difficiles. Attention, le lac des Chaumettes subie de forts marnages.

Superficie : 57 hectares.
Difficulté : Moyenne (Localiser les carpes est la véritable difficulté).
Pêche de nuit autorisée : Oui.
Sur la rive gauche depuis la mise à l’eau du pont rouge jusqu’au chemin d’accès situé juste à l’amont du barrage. Poids moyen des carpes :
Ce barrage est assez bien peuplé avec une densité moyenne et des poissons visant les 16, 17 kilos. Réglementation:
Sur ces parcours, seuls sont autorisés les appâts d’origine végétale. La pratique du No-kill est obligatoire. Le bateau avec moteur électrique est autorisé. Transport de carpe vivante de + 60 cm strictement interdit. Mise à l’eau :
