US 70, US 99 - Holt Blvd East - Pomona and Ontario

Today we traverse Holt Blvd, otherwise known as Historic US 70 and 99, and former BL 10. This road dates to the earliest incarnation of US 99's identity separate from US 66. Later, when US 70 was extended into California, it was co-routed with US 99 through these parts to give the route an East/West running number, as US 99 was technically North/South.
US 99, considered the Main Street of California, originally ran to both international borders with Canada and Mexico. It entered California at Hornbrook, traveling roughly along the route of modern I-5. In Red Bluff, the route split into two for a short time: US 99E and 99W. East followed modern SR 99 and 99W followed modern I-5. They rejoined just north of Sacramento. It then followed modern SR 99 to Bakersfield, where I-5 now picks up the old route. It ran to the East LA Interchange, turning directly east with US 60 and 70. It then made a b-line through the Inland Empire to Indio where it diverted south for it's final alignment to Calexico along modern SR 86 and SR 111.
US 70 has a much less interesting history. Extended into California in the 1930's, it had no identity of it's own. It was co-routed with US 60 through Arizona into California. It picked up US 99 in Indio, and continued to Banning where US 60 split from the multiplex. It continued through the Inland Empire, where it picked up US 60 once again before leaving the IE. It followed modern I-10 to the East LA Interchange, where US 70 officially ended.

Madonna of the Trail on Route 66 in Upland, CA
In this video we are on Route 66 in Upland, CA to check out the Madonna of the Trail statue. The Madonna of the Trail is one of twelves identical statues that are found across the United States, to honor the spirit of the pioneer mother. The one in Upland is the only one that is currently on Route 66 (the one in Albuquerque used to be on Route 66, but isn't now).
The statute was dedicated on February 1, 1929. The statute also includes a time capsule that was opened in 1979, and then rededicated to be opened again in 2029.

Upland is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The municipality is located at an elevation of 1,242 feet. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 73,732, up from 68,393 at the 2000 census. It was incorporated on May 15, 1906, after previously being named North Ontario.

Today's video is of a rather short route. Only 20 miles in length, CA 83 is one of the last urban expressways left in California as an active State Highway. Euclid Ave was a very early 'expressway' as well, dating back to 1882. Originally just 8 miles along, it exclusively served Ontario and Upland. At Philadelphia St, the road downgraded to two lanes. The dual roadways were separated by a sprawling greenbelt that doubled as a park for the Ontario 'Colony'.
in 1933, most of the historic road was added to the State Highway system, which also included the two-lane section from Philadelphia to Pine and a portion of Pine to El Prado Rd/then-SR 71, as LRN 192. The extension from Pine to modern SR 71 was built around the same time as modern SR 71, the 1950's that is. This section was built as part expressway, part 2-lane, and remains in it's original configuration. The portion from Pine to Philadelphia was upgraded in the 1970's to the modern expressway configuration.
Euclid Ave also serves as a very historic route from the Cucamonga and Pomona Valleys north to Mount Baldy. The majority of Foothill Blvd - and Historic US 66 as a whole - was originally the 'National Trails Road', which eventually was changed to 'National Old Trails Road'. In the late 1920's, NSDAR erected 12 statues along the trail to commemorate the strength of women, one in each state along the trail. Each was placed at historical intersections, and the junction of Euclid Ave and Foothill Blvd in Upland was chosen for California's. It was placed looking south in the parkway on the northern side of Foothill. The statue remains in it's original location to this day. The historic about the statues is really worth the read on Wikipedia.
As for the greenbelt 'parkway', it did double as a trolley-way in Upland to take residents south to the Southern Pacific Rail in Ontario.
