LAKE BAIKAL & The Hidden Beauty of Buryatia | Ulan-Ude, Russia
Lake Baikal, Buryatia, Russia - from the he small Russian family farm community on the border of Mongolia in Buryatia, we take a day-off from the Trans-Siberian Railway to experience the most popular attraction outside of Ulan-Ude; Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is the world's deepest lake and supplies the world with 1/5 of its fresh water. Lake Baikal is also the most ancient freshwater lake - originating some 20-25 million years ago! We spent the day touring Lake Baikal with a great group of Buryat locals. They took us to the Ushkan Islands where we were able to see Lake Baikal's most famous resident - Nerpas! Nerpas or Baikal seals, are one of the smallest true seals and the only seal who live exclusively in freshwater. They are also exclusive to Lake Baikal! On day two around Lake Baikal we toured to Suvo Saxony; an incredible rock formation deep in the heart of Buryatia. Jetting out of the valley like prehistoric giants, there are many tales and legends around the distinct rock formations of Suvo Saxony (Suvinian Saxony). From here we stop by a series of incredible salt lakes and then make our way back to Ulan-Ude. In the morning, we take a tour of Ulan-Ude and experience Knowledge Day; The Russian holiday that marks the beginning of a new school year. Ulan-Ude is a beautiful and diverse city. After another delicious Buryat lunch, we head to the Ulan-Ude Train Station to catch the Trans-Siberian Railway once again. This time, our Trans-Siberian Railway journey takes us to Vladivostok. Ulan-Ude to Vladivostok will take us three days across Siberia, into the far east of Russia. Vladivostok will be our final stop of the Trans-Siberian Railway - stay tuned!

A 360° GoPro VR Tour video of jarring Ethnographic Museum in Ulan-Ude, the centre for modern Buryat culture in Russian Siberia! In a forest clearing 6km from central Ulan-Ude, this outdoor collection of local architecture plus some reconstructed burial mounds and the odd stone totem are worth the trip. The grounds are also host to one of the more depressing zoos in the world - an exotic collection of Siberian animals are penned-up in tiny cages. Still, the ethnographic collection is divided into seven areas, each devoted to a different nationality, tribe or ethnic group. There are Hun-era standing stones, Evenki chumy, traditional Buryat yurts, timber European town houses and a whole strip of Old Believers’ homesteads, all brimming with period furniture and inhabited by costumed ‘locals’ giving craft demonstrations! =] 🇷🇺

BAIKAL LAKE, SIBERIA 2020: Road Trip Ulan Ude - Irkutsk | Russian MUST SEE PLACE
In August 2020, one of my dreams finally came true - I visited the deepest lake in the world - lake Baikal. It is located in Siberia and a must-visit place in Russia. This road trip will always remain in my memories as one of the best and most beautiful in my life!
For a week I travelled around the lake Baikal with a group of amazing people, starting from Ulan Ude, where I visited several Buddhist temples. We hiked to the mountains with a local where we saw incredible views and real Russian taiga. We travelled to Irkutsk and went to explore the largest island of the lake - Olkhon Island.
In this video I told you a lot of interesting and useful information, and showed you stunning views of this unique place in Russia! From Irkutsk we are boarding the train to Ulan-Ude. This is one of the most scenic route on the whole Trans-Siberian railway. Train is following Baikal Lake in some areas getting so close to the lake that it seems like it's touching the water from the lake. After eight hours in the train we are in Ulan-Ude, city in East Siberia. Different from everything we saw in Russia, people here are mostly practising buddhism. For us one of the most intriguing facts was that this city was closed for foreigners until 1980's. We stayed for one and a half day here, next day we boarded the train to Mongolia.

The original settlement of Ulan-Ude was founded in 1666 by Russian Udinskoye Cossacks as a winter staging post in the collection of taxes. The settlement was located on the high right bank of the Uda River. In 1689 it was turned into a fortress of Verkhneudinskaya . In 1690, the settlement weas granted city status of the city and the name of Udinsk, in 1735 the settlement was renamed to Verkhneudinsk. Due to its convenient geographical location, Ulan-Ude is the main trade centre with Mongolia and China, as well as with the cities of Eastern Siberia. With the coming of the Trans-Siberian railway, a station was built. Trade and influence grew and the city grew with this influence. Following the Russian Revolution, , Factories, food processing plants, and large machinery enterprises were built in the city. With the coming of the Trans-Mongolian Railway, Ulan-Ude became the railway hub for trains going to Beijing.... Ulan-Ude is also the capital of the Republic of Buryatia
