Top 10 Faroe Islands Cities By Population
The Faroe Islands is an archipelago and a self-governing territory of Denmark, with a total of 18 islands, of which 17 are inhabited. Although the Faroe Islands have settlements and villages spread across the archipelago, it does not have cities in the traditional sense. The largest settlement is Tórshavn, which is also the capital city of the Faroe Islands. Other major settlements include Klaksvík, Runavík, Tvøroyri, Fuglafjørður, Vágur, and Sørvágur.
Therefore, it is not appropriate to provide a top 10 list of cities in the Faroe Islands. Instead, I can provide you with a list of the largest settlements based on population:

Despite our attempt at keeping our documentaries as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting video clips. What you don’t see are the moments spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the challenges we faced. Please always keep that in mind when watching!
Grindadráp
An extremely controversial topic that is closely tied to the Faroe Islands is the traditional Grindadráp. In a nutshell, it is a mass killing of pilot whales, a species of dolphins. Every year, around 700 dolphins are killed in these hunts. As everything happens out in the open, with the shore waters literally turning red, these killings get a lot of international (media) attention.
Frankly, it is extremely tough to separate ‚right‘ from ‚wrong‘ here. In the past, this subsistence hunting technique was vital for the survival of the local inhabitants with the meat being equally distributed among all islanders. As such, the Grindadráp always had an important social aspect, as the local community worked jointly together. There is no doubt that the centuries of hardship, living on a remote, wind-tossed island group, have ingrained the advantages of this hunting technique into the collective mind of the Faroese.
From an outside perspective, killing pilot whales in such numbers seems utterly pointless and cruel, especially as, today, there are sufficient alternative food sources. At the same time, one could ask if there is a moral difference between killing pilot whales, a species of least concern, compared to seals, sharks, moose or deer? Or compared to cows, pigs or chickens held in factory farming, which are killed in the millions, away from the public eye.
No person regularly eating meat is in any position to morally judge the actions of the Faroese.
However, one thing that personally bothers us, is that these killings are defended by calling it a ‚tradition‘. In our opinion, traditions are nothing intrinsically positive. Slavery was once a tradition. Burning widows on a pyre was once a tradition. And female genital mutilation is still a horrible tradition today. Therefore, continuing these mass killings simply because they are a ‚tradition‘ is not a good enough reason. Some traditions are not worth keeping.

The Journey to SUDUROY Island from Torshavn, Faroe Islands – Episode 10
This video shows how to get to Suduroy Island in the Faroe Islands. I took a ferry to Suðuroy Island. The Suðuroy ferry departs from Tórshavn Harbour and docks in the Trongisvágsfjørður fjord at Krambatangi near Trongisvágur village. The ferry is operated and managed by Smyril.

Faroe, Denmark | Cities, places, nature, attractions, visit | 4k video | Faroe Islands what to see
Faroe, Denmark. The Faroe Islands are a group of nearly twenty rocky islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. There is some special attraction in the landscapes of the land islands of the North Atlantic, the discreet charm of nature and the way of life of the peoples living on these lands. From a 4K drone aerial view, the archipelago impresses with its steep rocky shores and numerous herds of sheep, green hills and fjords, waterfalls and grassy rooftops. The video review can only partly reflect the harsh charm of northern landscapes with a few trees, peat bogs and heather. To appreciate these lands, it is worth visiting them and immersing yourself in the atmosphere of these completely non-tourist places.
general information
The Faroe Islands are halfway between Iceland and Scotland. The Faroe Islands are de jure part of Denmark, but have partial sovereignty over many matters other than foreign policy. The Faroe Islands are territorially divided into 8 regions.
The area of their territory is almost 1400 square kilometers, the population is only 50 thousand inhabitants.
The relief of the islands is steep rocky hills and plateaus separated by gorges, winding coastlines and many fjords.
Capital
The capital is the city of Tórshavn on the island of Streymoy. The population of the administrative center is about 16 thousand inhabitants. The architecture of city buildings contains many historical monuments of the early Middle Ages. There is a special original way of life and culture here, carefully passed from generation to generation and crafts, among which the main ones are the fishing industry, slaughtering whales and raising sheep.
How to get there
Travel to the islands can be done by air or by sea. The most popular air route is to fly to Copenhagen, from there to the territory of the islands, on the planes of a local airline. By sea, a cheaper way is to sail on a ferry (journey time - 2 days), which runs between Denmark and Scotland.
Climate
The climate of these places is temperate maritime, with rather cool summers and relatively warm winters. Fogs are a companion of the local weather, precipitation falls mainly in winter and autumn. The average winter temperature is about 0, in the summer season, an average of + 12-17 degrees. The mildness of the weather is due to the proximity and influence of the Gulf Stream.
Nature
The Faroe Islands are landscapes of rocky islands, with glaciers, peat bogs, fjords and meadows. The beautiful places of the archipelago amaze with the grandeur of the northern nature and the diversity of the animal world. Harp seals live here, multiple bird nests, the local waters are rich in fish.
Due to the constantly blowing winds, the territories of the islands are almost treeless - grasses, mosses, lichens are found here from vegetation, rarely - coniferous trees, maple, ash.
Main islands
The Faroe Islands include almost 20 islands, the largest of which are Streymoy, Suduroy, Esturoy, Sanda, Borda, Voar. The rest of the islands are very sparsely populated.
What to see
Romantics and adventurers will not be bored here - people come here to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of silence, contemplate fantastic landscapes and feel that they have been to the end of the world.
The Faroe Islands are distinguished by a variety of landscapes - from steep cliffs to green meadows with grazing herds, from waterfalls to snow-covered mountain peaks.
The harsh Nordic beauty of these places creates a feeling of complete peace and tranquility.
Attractions
Each of the twenty Faroe Islands is beautiful in its own way, it is better to pay attention to each island if possible. You should definitely visit the western and rather dangerous Mykines - it was called the island of birds (more than 300 species live here). Danger lies in wait for travelers because of the rugged mountainous route, the small number of local residents (only 10 people) and the possible attacks of birds hatching offspring.
A unique place on the island of Vagar is Lake Sorvagsvatn “hanging” over the ocean. Due to the height difference between the waters of the lake and the ocean, a stunning waterfall and an optical illusion are formed. Another of the natural beauties of Vagar is the Mulafossur waterfall.
In addition to natural beauty, there are other attractions. The ancient city of Torshavn with picturesque and original architecture and color is popular with tourists. It is worth visiting the historical museum, the old part of the capital, the art museum, the Munkastovan monastery.
Be sure to visit the Faroese festivities and festivals - especially St. Olaf's Day at the end of July, football matches or summer whale slaughters.
