4K Town of Sredets from above
#DiscoverBulgaria #Sredets #aerial #Bulgaria #travel
Sredets (Bulgarian: Средец [srɛˈdɛt͡s]) is a town in Burgas Province in southeastern Bulgaria. It is located near Lake Mandrensko and the northern slopes of Strandzha. Sredets is the administrative centre of Sredets Municipality.
Sredets Point on Smith Island, Antarctica is named after the town.
The Roman fortress of Kaleto, located 2 km southwest of Sredets, was constructed at the end of the fifth and beginning of sixth century AD. Under the First Bulgarian Empire, the fortress became known as Potamukastel (Bulgarian: Потамукастел). Potamukastel was destroyed in the 11th century, but later rebuilt in the 12th century AD. The fortress was abandoned during Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, and the population of Potamukastel resettled at the location of the modern town and founded the village of Karabunar (Bulgarian: Карабунар) (black well in Turkish).
Karabunar is first mentioned in 1595, and is later found in Ottoman tax registers from 1676–1731. King Charles XII of Sweden is known to have stayed overnight in the village in 1713 en route to Constantinople and St. Sophronius of Vratsa worked as a teacher in Karabunar in 1792–1793. Russian Army data from 1827 mentions it as a purely Bulgarian village and it was visited by Vasil Levski in 1868. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, the area was occupied by the Russian 93rd Irkutsk Infantry Regiment on 16 February 1878. Karabunar became part of the autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia after the war and was annexed by the Principality of Bulgaria in 1885.
The village was renamed Sredets on 14 August 1934. Under Communist rule, the village was renamed Grudovo on 1 June 1950 in honour of Todor Grudov, a leader of the Communist September Uprising of 1923 and former mayor of the village. Grudovo was granted the status of town on 6 February 1960 and, following the fall of Communism in Bulgaria, on 23 January 1993, the town was renamed Sredets.

Mezdra, Bulgaria Season 2 Video 2
Seven thousand years of history can be seen at the fortress located at Mezdra, Bulgaria. Archaeological finds from the prehistoric layers at Mezdra show specialized craftsmen workshops that functioned until the end of the 5th millenium BC.
A prehistoric shrine was found three meters below the present surface of the central section of Mezdra. Two large auroch skulls and a stone shaped like a bulls head were found which makes it a unique find in Europe.
During the 3rd century a large shrine complex and temple was founded at Mezdra. By the 4th century the pagan temple ceased to exist and the fortifications were renovated. In the 6th century a number of structures were built divided by narrow streets.
A proto-Bulgarian fortress existed on the site between the 12th and 14th centuries. The fortification was destroyed and abandoned after the Ottoman invasion.

World's Ugliest Hotel: Interhotel Veliko Tarnovo, VT, Bulgaria
Quite possibly the ugliest hotel in the world, the Interhotel was built in the early 80's during the Communist Era. The hotel has about 200 rooms. It is not expensive to stay here but is a low-rated hotel in on-line reviews. While conveniently located, the hotel is in bad condition on the outside. It could use more updating and upkeep. Many things are closed permanently or temporarily at the hotel. Decades ago before other hotels were in Veliko Tarnovo, this probably was a good hotel. Sadly it is not now.
Goritsa waterfall, Bulgaria
Goritsa waterfall is located about 10 minutes walking distance from the village of Ovchartsi. There is an eco trail leading to a place with a good view of the waterfall. The trail does not reach the waterfall itself.
Acording to a legend Goritsa there was a maid living in the village at the time of the Turkish Yoke. She preferred jumping into river and committing suicide rather than being 'captured' by the local bay.
The height of the waterfall is 39m.

Veliko Tarnovo is a city in north central Bulgaria and the administrative centre of Veliko Tarnovo Province. Often referred to as the City of the Tsars, Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famous as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, attracting many tourists with its unique architecture. Until 1965 the name of the town was Tarnovo, and this is still the common name. The old city is situated on three hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora raising amidst the meanders of the Yantra. Tsarevets housed the palaces of the Bulgarian Emperors and the Patriarchate with the Patriarchal Cathedral, as well as a number of administrative and residential edifices surrounded by thick walls.
Trapezitsa was known for its many churches and as the main residence of the nobility. In the Middle Ages it was among the main European centers of culture and gave its name to the architecture of the Tarnovo Artistic School, painting of the Tarnovo Artistic School and literature. Veliko Tarnovo is an important administrative, economic, educational and cultural centre of Northern Bulgaria. As of February 2011, the town has a population of 118,783.
