Cyprus is an island nation that is a part of the European Union, although technically, it is located in Asia. A long history, rugged interior, diverse food and culture, exceptional water-sports and picture-perfect beaches define Cyprus. Cyprus has been a bone of contention between Greece and Turkey for quite some time now, but as visitors, it should not be a problem.
The capital Nicosia (also known as Lefkosia) is known for its colonial buildings and fusion of cultures. The city’s old town is dotted with historic buildings, churches, mosques, museums and surrounded by 16th-century Venetian walls. Cyprus has an unbelievable number of castles and historic elements scattered throughout the country. The stunning St Hilarion Castle, located on the Kyrenia mountain range, is one of Cyprus’ most well-preserved ruins and easily reached from Nicosia. Further north, the coastal town of Kyrenia is known for its historic namesake castle, with amazing views from the top. Kyrenia’s harbour also doubles up as a popular spot for tourists for leisurely walks.
Located on the eastern coast of Cyprus, is the walled city of Famagusta (also known as Gazimagusa), known for its 16th-century Venetian walls and 14th-century Othello’s Tower. You can climb to the top of the walls and admire the sweeping views of the Mediterranean.
Often underrated, Lemesos (also known as Limassol) lies on the south coast of Cyprus and is known for the Limassol Castle, Limassol Archaeological Museum and Prokymea Sculpture Park. On the outskirts of Limassol, lies Kolossi Castle, a former Crusader strongold and the ruins of the ancient city of Kourion. The Kourion Archaeological Site will transport you several centuries back as you stroll through the ruins of what was once a very powerful kingdom.
The majestic Troodos Mountains, houses the tallest peak of the island – Mt Olympus. While the mountain area, with its picturesque villages, is popular with skiers and snowboarders in winters, it becomes a playground for hikers, campers and birdwatchers in the summer.
Cyprus has excellent Mediterranean beaches and Lara Beach is one of its best. It is close to Paphos, a coastal city with a wide range of colonial buildings and museums. The UNESCO listed Paphos Archaeological Park, is the city’s focal point and is dotted with the remains of ancient Greek and Roman sites. Remote Karpas Peninsula, located on the northeastern coast of Cyprus, is also lined with beautiful white-sand beaches, archaeological ruins and rolling hills.

Hrad svätý Hilarion Kyrenia severný Cyprus. Hrad bol postavený vysoko v pohorí nad mestom Girne. Tento hrad je údajne inšpiráciou pre film „ Spiaca kráska „ od Walt Disney Zároveň zostáva jedným z najzachovalejších zo všetkých Križiackych hradov, najmä vďaka práci severocyperského odboru činnosti. Hrad vzhľadom na svoju polohu ponúka množstvo nádherných výhľadov, kde za jasného dňa môžete vidieť až na Tureckú pevninu. Pomenovanie hradu Hilarion je po mníchovi pustovníkovi, ktorý utiekol pred prenasledovaním vo svätej zemi a žil tu v jaskyni v horách. Najskôr tu v 10. storočí Byzantínci postavili kostol a kláštor. Spolu s hradmi Kantara a Buffavento bol svätý Hilarion postavený ako strážna veža, ktorá mala varovať pred blížiacimi sa pirátmi. Prvé zmienky o hrade pochádzajú z roku 1191. Spodná časť hradu slúžila na ubytovanie vojakov a ich koní. Stredná časť hradu obsahovala kráľovský palác, kuchyňu, kostol a veľkú cisternu. Horná časť hradu bola oddelená bránou s nádvorím uprostred. Z okien kráľovských izieb, ktoré sú v gotickom štýle, sa nám naskytá panoramatický výhľad na celý severný Cyprus Na najvyššom bode pohoria sa nachádzajú kráľovské apartmány, ktoré stoja za obhliadku a oplatí sa sem vyliezť. Toto miesto určite stojí za návštevu.
Saint Hilarion Castle Kyrenia North Cyprus. The castle was built high in the mountains above the city of Girne. This castle is said to be the inspiration for the movie Sleeping Beauty by Walt Disney At the same time, it remains one of the best-preserved of all Teutonic castles, mainly thanks to the work of the Northern Cyprus Department of Activities. Due to its location, the castle offers many wonderful views, where on a clear day you can see all the way to the Turkish mainland. Hilarion Castle is named after a hermit monk who fled persecution in the Holy Land and lived here in a cave in the mountains. The Byzantines first built a church and a monastery here in the 10th century. Together with the castles of Kantara and Buffavento, Saint Hilarion was built as a watchtower to warn of approaching pirates. The first mentions of the castle date back to 1191. The lower part of the castle was used to house soldiers and their horses. The central part of the castle contained the royal palace, a kitchen, a church and a large cistern. The upper part of the castle was separated by a gate with a courtyard in the middle. From the windows of the royal rooms, which are in the Gothic style, we have a panoramic view of the whole of Northern Cyprus At the highest point of the mountain are the royal apartments, which are worth seeing and worth the climb. This place is definitely worth a visit.
