Top Things To Do and See in Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria - Travel Bulgaria
Top Things To Do and See in Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria - Travel Bulgaria
Veliko Turnovo - Unique Holiday Experience in Bulgaria
Veliko Turnovo is situated in central Bulgaria, at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. It is spread over the historical hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, towering over the wide curves of the Iantra river. The city is more than 7000 years old. Veliko Tarnovo impresses with its original renaissance architecture - antique houses, situated one above another, towers, splendid museums, and monasteries with icon-paintings that attract tourists from all over the world. Capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Turnovo offers some of the most abundant and important cultural and historic attractions in Bulgaria. It also offers lively modern night life and nature with great opportunities for sports and rest.
Veliko Tarnovo has a rich historical past. The first clues for life date back to the 3rd millennium b.c. The first inhabitants were the Thracians and their settlement existed until the end of the Bronze Age. The next inhabitants were the Byzantines. A big Slav settlement was situated here during the VIII a.c. The Old-Bulgarian settlement appeared during the IX c. and during the X c. the hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora were already richly populated. The brothers Asen and Peter organized successfully a revolt against Byzantine rule in 1187 and declared Veliko Tarnovo the capital of Bulgaria. Turnovo became a well-fortified city and a significant political, administrative, economic and cultural center in Europe during the next 200 years. The contemporaries referred to it as the The Second Constantinople and The Third Rome.
The most important remnant of these times is the archaeological preserve Tsarevets, a restored fortress that surrounds the hill Tsarvets. One of the main attractions of the fortress is the Baldwin towers where the Latin Emperor Baldwin was captured and locked during the crusade in the early 1200's. The palace of the Bulgarian tsars was a self-contained fortress with the fabulous Throne Hall and the palace church St. Petka. The Bulgarian patriarchate was situated on the highest place within the fortress. In recent years, the fortress has received further acclaim with a Lights and Sound show - a program that combines sound and light effects to reproduce the history of the old Bulgarian capital.
Venturing beyond the fortress walls, one enters a historical preserved neighborhood with winding narrow cobblestones lined with craft shops, cafes, restaurants and boutique hotels. One can admire the numerous fully renovated Renaissance houses in a typical Bulgarian style, interspersed with ancient ruins and churches. The Gurko street and the ethnographic complex Samovodska Charshia reveal a great variety of Renaissance houses that seem to have landed on top of each other, with sheer views over the Iantra river. The Sarafkina house, built in 1861, is a particularly beautiful sample.
There is much to do around Veliko Turnovo as well including fourteen monasteries built during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in XII - XIV c. Many of them were destroyed during the Ottoman rule and were renovated by the self-educated Bulgarian architect and builder Kolio Ficheto and wall-painted by Zohari Zograf during XIX c. One of the largest is the Preobrajenski monastery that was founded at the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom during XIII - XIV c. by queen Sara, wife of Tsar Ivan Alexander. It had an important role for the spiritual life of the capital. It is situated 6km from Veliko Tarnovo in a beautiful area with vertical rocks in the canyon-like gorge of the Iantra River.
Turnovo has much to offer for people interested in history and architecture but it is also a very vibrant, energetic town with long pedestrian areas, restaurants, shops, and cafes. It is a favorite destination for Bulgarians of all ages and interests as well as international tourists.
Curious? You can look through the following listing of hotels and B&B's: [ Turnovo Holidays. You will not be disappointed.

Bulgaria's Beautiful Historical Locations - Timelapse Video - 4K
One of the loveliest Bulgarian historical cities must be Veliko Tarnovo (Велико Търново) with its Tsarevets (Царевец), a medieval stronghold located on a hill. It often features Sound and Light Show, emblematic attraction in Veliko Tarnovo. Audio visual spectacle using music and light to evoke the dramatic and turbulent historic events around Tsarevets and the city of Tarnovo Dramatic music, multicolor lights, lasers and chiming bells are synchronized in a special way. And it is not only Tsarevets that attracts visitors, Veliko Tarnovo has unique position over not one but two spectacular river bends. Not less enjoyable is city of Plovdiv with its historical old town which features Roman theatre and it is one of the world's best-preserved ancient theatres, It was constructed in the 90s of the 1st century AD, probably under the rulership of Emperor Domitian. Nearby Asen's Fortress, a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains is a great location for a daytime visit. Add little gems like Tryavna town or Dryanovo Monastery with its great locations along the river. Vratsa town might not the the most picturesque place, however its position at Vrachanski Karst Nature Reserve makes it a worthwhile visit.

Traveling to Bulgaria? Watch this video to discover Bulgaria's highlights!
Are you traveling to Bulgaria for your next holiday? Are you still undecided on which countries to choose for your trip to Eastern Europe? If it is going to be your first time in Bulgaria, do not miss these highlights!
The country of Bulgaria in Eastern Europe is packed with historic elements, breathtaking mountain scenery, pristine golden beaches, and numerous churches, fortresses and ruins. Its exotic landscape offers plenty of activities for the adventurous traveler as well.
Sofia is Bulgaria's laid-back capital with some great churches and museums. While many visitors tend to skip the city, it is worth visiting for an authentic Bulgarian experience. Sofia is a modern city, but you will find plenty of buildings, churches and mosques from the yesteryear. Built in the early-20th-century, the massive Aleksander Nevski Cathedral is the most recognised landmark of the city. Sofia History Museum, Boyana Church and Sveta Sofia Church are some of the other highlights in the city. The UNESCO listed Rila Monastery, located around 100 km south of Sofia, is the most popular in Bulgaria and has impressive frescos and architecture. A stronghold of Bulgarian culture during the Ottoman rule, Rila Monastery is also the largest in the country and dates back to more than a thousand years.
In the country's south lies the historic city of Plovdiv. Just like Rome, Plovdiv also sits on seven mountains. Famed for being the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe, Plovdiv shines with its numerous historic relics. While the city's old centre is the focal point, the stunning Roman Amphitheatre is its must-visit attraction. The restored 2nd-century amphitheatre still hosts concerts and events. Bulgaria's third city Varna is located on the Black Sea coast. Even though Varna is often referred to as a port and seaside resort city, plenty of historic elements can be seen throughout the city - take the enormous Roman baths complex for an example. The 19th-century Primorski Park and the Varna Archaeological Museum are the other highlights of the city. The Black Sea coast is also home to the towns of Sozopol and Nesebar. With their cobblestone roads and wooden houses, both towns boast an ancient charm, and excellent beaches and accommodation, that goes without saying. More commercialized than Sozopol, Nesebar is a UNESCO world heritage listed city with Byzantine ruins and medieval churches, and a souvenir market which is one of the best in the region.
Bulgaria's central mountains also houses some of the country's best historical locations. Veliko Tarnovo in the region is one of the oldest towns in the country and former capital of Bulgarian tsars. The restored Tsarevets Fortress along with the old handicraft market - Samovodska Charshiya are the focal points of Veliko Tarnovo. Veliko Tarnovo also makes a great base for exploring the nearby towns like Tryavna, Kazanlak and Etar. While Tryavna is a historic town with cobbled streets and dotted with National Revival-era houses, multicultural Kazanlak which produces two-thirds of the world’s rose oil is known as Bulgaria's Valley of Roses, and hosts the annual Rose Festival every June. Kazanlak also offers some amazing historical sites including a 4th-century BC Thracian tomb. In the Pirin Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria lies Melnik - a small town with over 600 years of wine-making traditions. The town's mountainous landscape and natural rock formations make it one of Bulgaria's most alluring locations and if you are a wine connoisseur, you must take a sip of its famous Melnik 55 red wine.
Bulgaria is also rich in natural treasures like the uniquely shaped Belogradchik Rocks in the remote northwest - which offers great views, photo and hiking opportunities and the ancient Belogradchik Fortress.
From the beautiful Black Sea coastline to its mountainous interior, Bulgaria is a treat for nature lovers while history buffs will be able to explore some of Europe’s most prestigious historical sites and towns.
Must visit places and experiences in Bulgaria: Sozopol, Varna, Nesebar, Rila Monastery, Rila Lakes, Plovdiv, Melnik, Belogradchik, Sofia, Veliko-Tarnovo, Kazanlak
