My Favorite Weird Town in America | Truth or Consequences

OBSCURIST TOURIST 143 - Truth or Consequences is a city in New Mexico. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names for having chosen to rename itself in the 1950s after a radio show of the same name. I spent a few days here to explore the town and immerse myself in its culture, but I also was not fully aware that I'd be one of the only tourists in the town because Ari Aster's Hollywood production for Eddington was filming throughout the duration of my stay. Interestingly, the entire town of T or C was converted instead into ... Eddington. The movie, slated to be released sometime in late 2024, stars Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, Joaquin Phoenix, and Emma Stone.

Come along as I explore this weird little town in the heart of New Mexico.

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, NM | Relaxing in Hot Springs

We slipped into the hot springs at Riverbend Hot Springs and a feeling of zen slipped over us. The serene music playing, the mountains in the distance, and the feeling of the naturally hot water on a cold winter day combined together for a feeling a pure bliss. Our time in New Mexico was short, but this was one of our favorite stops in the entire trip!

Truth or Consequences is best known for two things. The first is the naturally occurring hot springs, the other is the name. Originally known simply as Hot Springs, the name changed in 1950 to honor the famous NBC radio show of the same name.

There is more to Truth or Consequences than just the hot springs. While small, it's one of New Mexico's most charming towns. The downtown area has restaurants, shops, and a fantastic brewery. Everyone we met and talked to was very friendly and welcoming, which only made our visit even more enjoyable.

Truth or Consequences is the most popular in the colder months, as the demand for hot springs goes down as the weather gets warmer. Located about halfway between Albuquerque, NM and El Paso, TX, it's a popular getaway for those looking to get out of the city and into a more rural part of the state.
