Torrox is a municipality in the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of Axarquía. It is located in the Costa del Sol (specifically the Costa del Sol Oriental), on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara.
The city itself is divided into sections: Torrox Costa on the sea and Torrox Pueblo, 4 km inland. Torrox Park, a housing section in between the costa and the village, could be seen as another division. Torrox is located in close proximity to Nerja.

There are no big groups of drunken lads on a night out here! Instead it's a peaceful place with couples and families relaxing in the sunshine and having meals and drinks at the beachfront restaurants and bars.
There are no massive holiday hotels yet either. The buildings here are apartments. Many of them are second homes or holiday homes for the Spanish and German nationals in Spain.

Torrox Costa is a popular seaside resort linked to Torrox Pueblo, which is 4 kilometres inland from the coastal area. It is very popular with tourists during the summer, but still hasn’t got as built up as some of its counterparts in the Costa del Sol.
Much of the Torrox’s amenities: bars, restaurants and shops, can be found on the main Paseo Marítimo (promenade). During the summer, market stalls set up selling various arts, crafts and souvenirs and there are supermarkets and banks in town for everyone's convenience.
The seaside town of Torrox Costa offers a wide selection of good eateries and bars, the main leisure area being along the Paseo Marítimo and the side streets leading to the beach.

Torrox Costa Spain Chill Town End of Summer 2022 + Oktobefest Costa del Sol | Axarquía | Málaga [4K]
Torrox consists of two separate areas: firstly the village (Torrox Pueblo), located a few kilometers from the coast in the upper valley of the river of its name and which retains the characteristic features of the white villages of Arab origin, whose main activity is modern agriculture, greenhouse and subtropical products. In addition, its coastline (Torrox Costa), which is intended for sun and sand holidays with a wealth of hotels and clean, well looked-after beaches.
This area is home to a lighthouse near which important archaeological remains from the Roman period are to be found.
The Phoenicians and Greeks carried out commercial activities along its 8 kilometres of coastline, but it was the Romans who founded an important factory-town at the mouth of the River Argentino, meaning silver river (on a site now known as Punta de Torrox or Faro de Torrox), which was dependent on the larger Caviclum -present-day Torrox-, a prosperous Roman city founded in the 1st century which underwent continuous growth, reaching its peak in the 4th and 5th centuries before being occupied by the Visigoths and, in the 8th century, the Arabs.
In 755 Prince Omeya Abd-el-Rhaman settled in Torrox, leading his followers from here to Cordoba, where he founded the independent Emirate.
During the Andalusi-Arabic period, Torrox was known throughout the Mediterranean for the production and sale of silk fabrics, sugar cane plantations, oil, almonds and figs.
At the time of the conquest by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487, Torrox consisted of three neighbouring hamlets -Alhaguer, Almedina and Alhandac- protected by Torrox Castle which, in time, would lend its name to the town. The definitive capture of Torrox by the Christians did not come until 1488, after a brief spell during which the Muslim leader El-Zagal took control of the town and its castle.
The area were shaken by the major tremor known as the Andalusian Earthquake on Christmas Day of 1884 in which extensive material damage was suffered. On 20 January 1885, a concerned King Alfonso XIII visited the area, staying in the building which today houses Torrox's Cultural Centre.
Sugar cane exploitation ushered in prosperous times in the 19th century, and a number of the town's most noteworthy houses and buildings date back to this era, such as the sugar factory, built in 1890.

Torrox Costa Spain Relaxing Town Update May 2023 Costa del Sol | Axarquía | Málaga [4K]
Torrox belongs to the region of the Axarquía, in the province of Málaga. The mild climate conditions and the warm welcome you will receive, make this place an exceptional holiday destination, so much that the town has won the “prize” of Europe’s best climate. This is thanks to the year-round spring, whose average temperature is 18ºC.
This is possible thanks to the mountains that envelop the village and its closeness to the beaches of the Costa del Sol, in the valley of river Torrox. In fact, only 4 km separate the two areas of Torrox, Torrox Pueblo and Torrox Costa. The landscape you will be able to enjoy is subtropical, as it combines the town’s seven beaches, summing a total of nine km worth of seashore, with the mountain range that prevents the strong winds from reaching Torrox.
As mentioned, the town is divided into two areas, separated by 4 km and well connected between each other. Torrox Pueblo is the Old Town, the oldest part of the village and where you will find the highest quantity of history and monuments.
Torrox Costa, on the other hand, features more touristic areas, beaches and seashores that let you enjoy the famous climate of Torrox. Torrox Costa is also divided into smaller areas, among which El Morche stands out. Here is where the fishermen used to live and, nowadays, it has become a very fascinating tourist attraction.
The word Torrox comes from Arab, and it means “tower”. However, several studies have proved that the first inhabitants of this place in the province of Malaga were the Phoenicians, and the Romans, who develop the commercial and fishing industry (famous is the garum sauce) in the area. Later on, Torrox was occupied by the Arabs, when it became the silk collecting centre, which then used to be sent to Malaga and Granada. Torrox was conquered by the Christians in 1488.
The Lighthouse of Torrox is the main attraction in town. It was built in 1864, and it’s one of the only ones in the province of Malaga that are open to the public. The lighthouse welcomes exhibitions that show the history of Torrox, also thanks to the Roman archaeological site that’s located in the Lighthouse enclosure. Inside the lighthouse, there is the Museo Marino de Torrox (Marine Museum of Torrox).
The coast of Torrox is part of the famous Costa del Sol. Among its most famous beaches, some are awarded yearly the Blue Flag, which is a synonym of cleanliness and purity of its waters and sand. The beaches of Torrox feature the beach of El Morche, in the urban area of Torrox Costa, provided with a promenade and provided with all services, and the 1.200-mt-long beach of Ferrara, which has access adapted for people with reduced mobility. The latter also features a smaller cove in its East part (Playa Chica) and it’s characterised by a familiar ambience.

Torrox Costa Spain Best Climate in Europe November 2021 Costa del Sol | Axarquía | Málaga [4K]
Torrox Costa is a popular seaside resort, which is linked to Torrox Pueblo, which is 4 kilometres inland from the coastal area.
The area is very popular with tourists during the summer, but still hasn’t got as built up as some of its counterparts of the Costa del Sol.
Much of the Torrox’s amenities: bars, restaurants and shops, can be found on the main Paseo Marítimo (promenade). During the summer market stalls set up selling various arts, crafts and souvenirs and there are supermarkets and banks in town for everyone's convenience.
The town of Torrox offers a wide selection of good eateries and bars, the main leisure area being along the Paseo Maritimo and the side streets leading to the beach.
During the summer, some bars along the coast offer music shows and flamenco performances. And for the young at heart, there are a selection of pubs and discos.
