Autumn Road Trip Drive To Visit Tillicoultry In Clackmannanshire Scotland
Tour Scotland Autumn travel video of a road trip drive, with Scottish music, on ancestry visit to Tillicoultry in Clackmannanshire. One of the Hillfoots Villages on the A91, which runs from Stirling to St. Andrews in Fife, Tillicoultry is situated at the southern base of the Ochil Hills. The town owes its name to the Scottish Gaelic for hill in the back land and in 1195 it was recorded as Tulycultri. From the early 1700s Tillicoultry became known for Tillicoultry serge, a cloth manufactured by weaving worsted with linen, though in 1790 it remained a fairly small village. This all changed following the establishment of the first mill in the 1790s, which was rapidly followed by many more. The first mills were water-powered and built close to the burn, but from the 1830s steam powered mills began to be introduced. These spread steadily south west down the Tillicoultry Burn as prime space was used up. The impact on the town was dramatic. A population which stood at 916 in 1801 had increased to 4,686 in 1851. Tillicoultry serge continued to be manufactured in the town, but many other product also emerged from the mills here. These included blankets, plaids, tartans, tweeds and shawls. By 1870 there were 12 mills employing over 2000 people on 230 power looms and 340 hand looms in Tillicoultry. In addition there were some 200 hand loom weavers making shawls and napkins in the town.

Ochil Hills- Kings Seat Via Tillicoultry Glen 🏴
King's Seat is one of the most prominent of the Ochils, being set right atop the steep southern front of the range. It can be climbed from either Dollar or Tillicoultry, as well as included in a classic round of all the Donald summits of these hills.
King's Seat Hill stands out in distant views of the Ochil Hills far more than its 648m height would lead you to expect. In a range of hills whose higher members hide shyly behind lower hills on the line of the escarpment, King's Seat Hill is fully visible, rising directly from the line of the A91 between Tillicoultry and Dollar.
Climbing King's Seat Hill is a nice way to spend a fairly undemanding half day, while still offering a sense of achievement and some excellent views.
Old Photographs Tillicoultry Clackmannanshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Tillicoultry, Scottish Gaelic: Tulach Cultraidh, a town in Clackmannanshire. Tillicoultry is one of the Hillfoots Villages on the A91 road, which runs from Stirling to St. Andrews in Fife. Tillicoultry is situated at the southern base of the Ochil Hills. Due to the rapid growth of the village during the 19th century, there were problems with overcrowding, poor housing, high infant mortality, water supply and drainage. In an attempt to address these problems, Tillicoultry Burgh was created in 1871. Around 1930, one of the first bus stations in the country was built at Murray Square to serve the eight bus services which terminated in the town. As the textile and coal mining industries declined, Tillicoultry became a popular commuter town. Many of the mill buildings have been converted into residential accommodation. Tillicoultry railway station, on the Devon Valley Railway was situated opposite Devonvale Hall, and closed in 1964. Captain James Dalgleish Pollock was born in Tillicoultry on 3 June 1890, he died on 10 May 1958. He was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Colonel James Lennox Dawson, born in Tillicoultry on 25 December 1891, died 15 February 1967, was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Tillicoultry Old Graveyard
A new video is available now at
Nothing that is identifiable with certainty survives of the medieval parish church, but it is known to have been within a graveyard to the south-east of Tillicoultry House, which is now surrounded by modern housing.
The entry in the Old Statistical Account, published in 1795, states that the old parish church and manse were in the graveyard in the vicinity of Tillicoultry House (itself now demolished), and the first edition of the Ordnance Survey shows the house immediately to the north-west of the graveyard. The slope to the south of the graveyard was called Kirk Hill. The old church was replaced by a new one on a more convenient site, on Dollar Road, which the Statistical Account says was built in 1773; however, the new churchyard has at least one monument dating from the late seventeenth century, suggesting that the move took place earlier, perhaps to enhance the privacy of the occupants of Tillicoultry House. The eighteenth-century church was in turn superseded by the church which remains in use, and which was built to the designs of William Stirling in 1827-9.
The old graveyard was evidently in use for burials from at least the twelfth century on the evidence of two coped monuments, one of which has the tegulation usually associated with hogback stones; the other of those stones is probably later, and has been re-used to mark a post-Reformation burial. The location of the church within the graveyard is unknown, but it is worth noting that the part of the north boundary wall to the west of the gateway is thicker than might be expected for such an enclosure wall, and the possibility cannot be ruled out that it is a relic of the church. One possible fragment from the church in the churchyard is what appears to be a stone from the apex of a coped gable, in which there is the socket for a cross or finial; however, the stone is now so weathered that it is difficult to determine if it is of medieval or later date.

Ochil Hills - Castle Law - Cairn & Pictish Fort Remains - Dumyat
Dumyat has two principal summits: Castle Law on the west, and Dumyat proper on the east. On the summit of Castle Law the remains of an ancient hill fort, originally occupied by the Maeatae, are still clearly discernible.
At one time the favourite route to the summit of either Dumyat or Castle Law was via the prominent gulley which runs almost straight up the southern scarp face, and continues down the gently sloping north face. This gulley was formed by the erosion of a fault, resulting from the juxtaposition of soft pyroclastic rocks on one side against harder andesite and basalt on the other[2]. This has resulted in an area where hard andesite slightly overhangs, and is the darkest and least exposed part of the climb, which is not particularly difficult. Further gullies, formed by secondary tearing around the main fault (itself a product of the major disturbance which resulted from the Ochil Fault) extend to the right into Dumyat, and form potential shortcuts to the summit. The first of these, Raeburn's Gulley, is particularly dangerous and should only be attempted by experienced and properly equipped rock climbers, however the second, Siart Gulley, is climbable by anyone of average ability, if care is taken in scrambling up the steep step at the end. The third, fourth and fifth gullies are not named, and become progressively easier
Dumyat ( /dəˈmaɪ.ɨt/) is a hill at the western extremity of the Ochil Hills in central Scotland. The name is thought to originate from Dun (hill fort) of the .
Although relatively small (its height is 418 metres), the characteristic shape of the hill forms an important part of the distinctive scenery of the Stirling area, and it is often depicted (particularly in postcards and calendars) in combination with the nearby Abbey Craig. The hill is a popular climb with tourists and visitors to the Stirling and Trossachs area, due to the historical nature of Stirling and the proximity of the Wallace Monument.
