Places to see in ( Thetford - UK )
Thetford is a market town and civil parish in the Breckland district of Norfolk, England. Thetford is on the A11 road between Norwich and London, just south of Thetford Forest. After World War II Thetford became an ‘overspill town’ taking people from London, as a result of which its population increased substantially.
The Ancient House Museum, situated on White Hart Street, is an oak-framed Tudor merchant's house. The museum holds replicas of the Thetford Treasure and has displays about flint knapping, rabbit warreners and wildlife in the brecks. You can also find out more about Thomas Paine and the Maharajah Duleep Singh. The Ancient House was gifted to the town by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh. The surrounding Breckland has been largely replaced by the Thetford Forest, though Thetford Chase remains.
East Harling near Thetford hosts an annual Autumn Equinox Festival for astronomy. The town is also the site for the UK's Star Party, as it is centrally located in a rural area with dark night skies. An annual concert, STORM open air festival used to take place at the Castle Green.
Thetford is just off the A11 road between Norwich (28 miles (45 km)) and London (86 miles (138 km)). The A11 previously ran through the town but a bypass was constructed in the 1990s. It is served by Thetford railway station, with Abellio Greater Anglia running services between Norwich and Cambridge, and East Midlands Trains from Norwich to Liverpool Lime Street (via Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly). From Cambridge, regular services run to London King's Cross.
The Iceni were a Celtic tribe living in Norfolk and parts of Cambridgeshire. Archaeological evidence suggests that Thetford was an important tribal centre during the late Iron Age and early Roman period. A ceremonial 'grove' was uncovered there during excavations. In 1979, a hoard of Romano-British metalwork, known as the Thetford treasure was located just outside Thetford.

Thetford Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the East Anglian county of Norfolk, and roughly equidistant between Cambridge and Norwich, is the town of Thetford.
In Saxon times Thetford was the capital of East Anglia. It had its own mint in the 10th century, and by 1086 the Domesday Survey recorded it as being the sixth largest town in the country with 4,000 to 4,500 people living here.
By the 12th century Thetford had become an important religious centre, with 22 churches around the town, as well as Thetford Priory, founded in 1103. The priory was left to ruin in the 16th century along with the town's religious houses when Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This brought about a decline in the area. However, in the 1570s Thetford received a boost when Elizabeth I granted a town charter leading to redevelopment in the main streets.
In 1819 plans were made to turn Thetford into a spa town for tourists, similar to Bath Cheltenham, Leamington and Harrogate. The meadows between the rivers Thet and Little Ouse contained a spring of mineral rich water. A pump room was constructed, but later closed in 1838.
In 1848 Thetford became a producer of steam engines courtesy of Charles Burrell & Sons Ltd who were based in the town. At its height the factory employed over 350 people, with workers moving in from London, the Midlands and Yorkshire until its closure in 1928.
After the Second World War Thetford became an overspill town, providing housing for those from the cities whose homes had been destroyed in the Blitz, leading to a surge in population during the second half of the 20th century.
During the walk we see two statues. The first appears at the very beginning and is of Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. He was exiled to Great Britain aged 15 following on from the Anglo Sikh Wars. There he befriended Queen Victoria and bought a country estate close to Thetford in 1863.
The second statue is of Thomas Paine. Born in Thetford, Paine was a political writer who travelled to Philadelpia in 1774 with a letter of introduction from Benjamin Franklin. In 1776 he wrote a pamphlet arguing the case for American independence, predating the Declaration of Independence itself. Later on, Paine travelled to France where he advocated for the French Revolution. He is also believed to have met Napoleon Bonaparte in the late 1790s to discuss a potential invasion of England. So basically turning up everywhere of historical significance, like an 18th century Forrest Gump. Napoleon allegedly stated that a statue of gold should be erected to [Thomas Paine] in every city in the universe. The statue we see is made of bronze and dates back to 1964 where it was initially gilded. Having lost its golden appearance, it was then re-gilded in November of 2020, making it quite hard to miss!

🙌 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌Hey😀😀😀😀😀🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌😀😀😀😀
A short video from a recent walk along the Little Oouse River Thetford Norfolk.
The final 6 miles (10 km) of the river follow a relatively straight course which heads north-west to join the River Great Ouse at Brandon Creek. The channel is man-made, and probably dates from the Roman period. Prior to its construction, the river continued due west, and joined the Great Ouse near Old Bank Farm. Its dry raised bed, known locally as a rodham, can easily be traced in the landscape, as its light-coloured bands of silt contrast with the dark, low-lying peat soils. It is also clearly shown on the modern Ordnance Survey map, delineated by the 0 ft contour. On the river channel, there is a pumping station on the north bank, and the course passes between the hamlets of Brandon Bank on the north bank and Little Ouse on the south. Nearby is the lowest trig point in Britain, marking a spot which is 3 feet (0.91 m) below sea level. Its junction with the Great Ouse is immediately after it passes under the A10 road.Below the pool site, the river is joined by the River Thet, where there is a network of channels, sluices and weirs, together with the remains of a water mill, dating from the early 19th century. The building is now used as a masonic lodge. As it threads its way through the town, the river is crossed by Town Bridge, a single elliptical cast iron span dating from 1829,and after it passes under the A11 Thetford Bypass, it is bordered by Thetford Forest. This is the largest manmade lowland forest in Britain, covering 72.3 square miles (187 km2).There is a weir beyond the bridge, and the county border rejoins the river as it turns back towards the west. This section is easier to follow, as the St Edmund Way footpath runs along the north bank from the centre of Thetford, but leaves the river where the county boundary joins. The St Edmund Way continues to the north of the river, and the Little Ouse Path runs to the south. At Santon Downham, the Little Ouse Path continues along the north bank of the river, on the original towpath. The Environment Agency has designated the section from Thetford to Brandon, where it flows through the afforested Breckland, as a Flood Warning Area.
The lower part of the river crosses over the Cut-off Channel in a concrete aqueduct. The Channel is a 28-mile (45 km) drain which runs from Barton Mills to Denver along the south-eastern edge of the Fens, and was constructed in the 1950s and 1960s. During times of flood it carries the head waters of the River Lark, the River Wissey and the Little Ouse to Denver Sluice. On its east side are two sluices, so that flood water from the upper river can be diverted into the Cut-off Channel and the section between there and the Great Ouse isolated. The flood banks on this lower section are up to half a mile (0.8 km) apart, so that the meandering river can form a large lake. The river is currently navigable for 16.6 miles (26.7 km) from its junction with the River Great Ouse to Santon Downham bridge. There are references to its use by boats carrying goods to Brandon as early as the 13th century, and barges are known to have reached Thetford, some 6 miles (9.7 km) beyond Santon Downham when the river was tidal.Stone from Barnack, used in the construction of Thetford Priory in the 12th century, was almost certainly moved along the river, and improvements to the channel were authorised by the Commissioners of Sewers as early as 1575. Further documentary evidence confirms that it was navigable as far as Thetford in 1664.However, water levels dropped when Denver Sluice was built on the River Great Ouse. An Act of Parliament authorised the Corporation of Thetford to make improvements to the river in 1670, but they were unable to carry out the work, and so the Rt Hon Henry, Earl of Arlington made the improvements, and was assigned the tolls as a result. A series of staunches were built, to hold back the water and raise the levels, but they were too far apart to be effective. The rights of the navigation were given to Thetford Corporation by Henry's daughter Isabella in 1696, and the Corporation had to build a new staunch near Thetford in 1742, in order to maintain water levels in the town.
