BYZANTINE FORTRESS LEKYTHOS CASTLE and ORTHODOX CHURCH in TORONI, with short visit to POLYGYROS
Toroni is a small town in southwestern Sithonia with beginnings dating back to ancient times. It lies on a very popular, two-kilometar-long sandy beach, awarded the Blue Flag with magnificent sunsets.

In its history, it repeatedly passed from the jurisdiction from the Persians and Greeks to Byzantium and the Turks, only to finally return to Greek rule at the beginning of the 20th century. Ancient Toroni was badly damaged in 1903 when the Turks used granite stones from its walls to clear the roads between Thessaloniki and Istanbul. It is especially interesting that some parts of the old town are now flooded and are located about 35m from the coast. Modern Toroni is located about one kilometer north of the ruins of the old city.
According to mythology Toroni was the wife of Proteas, son of Poseidon. Her children got killed when they caused a battle with Hercules. Traces from a prehistoric settlement have been found in the area by archaeologists. The most important excavation took place in 1975. The city was created from settlers with an origin from Halkida in the 8th century BC and soon became one of the most important cities not only in Sithonia but in whole Halkidiki. It took part in the Persian wars as well as the Peloponnesian war.

At the very exit from Toroni, near the road from Toroni to Porto Koufo, there are the remains of a Byzantine fortress Likithos. Torone was the name of the ancient city that existed here and Lekythos is the cape that is at the base of the mountain and forms the harbor today. In Greek the name Lekythos means an oil flask. It’s speculated that the bottle shape of the peninsula was the reason for the name, so Lekythos was not the city itself but the cape. Overtime the Byzantine castle on this cape was called Lekythos castle.
Today a visitor to the castle can witness the remains of a few walls that project from the ground to a height of no more than 2-3 meters. The ruins are fenced off to prevent tourists from climbing on and destroying the ruins. Still, a large part of the ancient Torone ruins are underwater.
The Orthodox church dedicated to St. Athanasios is in the center of Toroni, placed on the slope of the hill. It is based on different heights, which, looking at the front, is not noticeable. When entering the church from the direction of the center of Toroni, you climb a short steep path along which, on one side and on the other side, you can see the floral spalars of beautiful Mediterranean flowers.
Within the church there is a belfry, quite high for the church in one small place, so in the overall impression the church dominates the city.
On the same hill there is a school with accompanying playgrounds, and they share the yard.
Polygyros is the capital of Chalkidiki. It is built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a plateau on the south west side of the mountain Cholomontas. It is a picturesque town, 69 kilometers from Thessaloniki and during the last years it has developed and transformed into a modern town and administrative and health center of the Prefecture.

Discover the Tropical Halkidiki Peninsula | Van Life Greece | The Hippie Trail #21
Just before leaving Greece we take time to discover the Halkidiki peninsula, stretching south from Thessaloniki. First thing on our agenda is a visit to the open cellar days of the Ktima Gerovassiliou winery in Epanomi. South from the winery we'll find a submerged shipwreck, abandoned for nearly fifty years on a tropical beach. After a few days camping at the entrance of a laguna it's time to discover the rest of Halkidiki!
