Discover Lesotho - Abelanang Basotho Teyateyaneng

In this episode of Discover Lesotho Mapule takes us to Teyateyaneng (T.Y.) Handicrafts that create memorable traditional Lesotho crafts. Local weaving groups formed Abelanang Basotho which means lets share and they take the product to market for the weavers. They use local mohair from the farmers in the area and they work it all the way to the final product. Every product is done passionately by hand and they include wall hangings, tapestries, rugs, scrafs and cushion covers to mention a few. All of the products tell a story.

Shop for Local Crafts in Teyateyaneng

Shop for Local Crafts in Teyateyaneng - An episode of series: The 15 Best Things to Do in Lesotho.
Located an hour’s drive northeast of Maseru, Teyateyaneng was founded towards the end of the 19th century by King Moshoeshoe’s son. Today, this busy market town is best known among visitors as the premier place to shop for authentic, handmade, traditionally Basotho crafts. These are sold at a series of different craft cooperatives, including Lesotho Mountain Cooperative and Elelloang Basali. Look for intricately woven straw mokorotlo hats as well as wool and mohair products dyed in a rainbow of different colors. To have your choice of shopping venues, be sure to visit from Monday to Saturday as some places close on Sundays. .

Ha Kome Cave Houses in Teyateyaneng, Lesotho

The Kome Caves are a group of cave dwellings made out of mud in the district of Berea, Lesotho 25 km east of Teyateyaneng. The caves are still inhabited by the descendants of the original people who built the caves. The site has been classified as a National Heritage Site.
The Ha Kome Cave Village is situated at Pulane area in Berea district. The caves were a hideout for the Basia and one Bataung clans during the Lifaqane Wars and cannibalism. The cave is still inhabited by their descendants to this day. There are also faded San paintings in the cave which indicates that the San also occupied the cave some time prior to their arrival albeit briefly.

The Kome Crafts and Information Office that is about 500 metres up the road from the caves houses locally-made crafts including crafts from Lesotho Mountain Crafts in Teyateyaneng, 21 km from the centre. You will also find a tuck shop and a small café at the centre.

At the Kome Crafts and Information Centre you can have picnic and even strike up a barbecue/braai at one of its many stands. The helpful staff at the centre can help you organise pony treks around the Pulane area and even assist you with guided tours of the Kome Cave Village. Catering is available upon request. Camping is permitted but there aren't any shower facilities.

A high clearance vehicle is recommended if you driving down to the centre and sensible footwear for the the trip to the cave dwellings.

Other places of historical significance near the Ha Kome cave dwellings are the Bokhopa pinnacle where cannibals waylaid their grass robes to trap the passersby and a large overhang where that inhabited in Malimong (Place of the cannibals).

Maliba Lodge is situated only 48km from the Caledonspoort Border Post making it highly accessible for those travelling from South Africa.

We embarked on a soul-refreshing hike and would you believe it's just a short drive from Clarens, South Africa (less than 2 hours). Hiking through the enchanting Maluti Mountains at Maliba Lodge in Lesotho, the 4.7 km trail unveils breathtaking landscapes and leads us to the pristine Holomo Waterfall.

Maliba Lodge - Tsehlanyane National Park, Lesotho

Maliba Lodge - Tsehlanyane National Park, Lesotho

►Read the blog:

David’s Been Here travels through Lesotho to explore what many call “the Kingdom in the Sky.” Lesotho is the only country in the world to be entirely above 1,000 meters above sea level. David’s favorite hotel in Lesotho was the Maliba Mountain Lodge in Tsehlanyane National Park, which he profiles in this video.

The lodge graciously hosted David in a luxurious chalet with double beds, beautiful vistas, wood burning fireplace, and handcrafted furniture. The Maliba Lodge has 6 mountainside chalets for couples and 4 river chalets that can accommodate up to 8 people.

People come to Lesotho to enjoy the natural landscapes and local culture. Maliba Lodge took David horseback riding, on a village tour, and gave him a much-needed back massage at the hotel spa.

Some of the features that make Maliba Mountain Lodge so great is the free Wi-Fi, heated floors, and heated beds (yes, you read that right). David then lets Daniel, the hotel’s Guest Relations Manager, say a little bit more about the property.

Daniel explains that the hotel is situated in the northern part of the country. It has two room types: the 5-star mountain chalets and the 3-star self-catering cottages. Activities offered by Maliba Mountain Lodge include: horseback riding, hiking, spa treatments, and cultural visits to nearby villages. Guests who want to horseback ride are sent with an experienced guide and all the necessary equipment to explore the trails of Tsehlanyane National Park.

Village tours are meant to familiarize guests with the local culture. Stops include seeing the local doctor, traditional mud huts, and the local school. The video finishes by showing us the landscaped gardens and unique architecture found at Maliba.
