Places to see in ( Tetbury - UK )

Tetbury is a small town and civil parish within the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. Tetbury lies on the site of an ancient hill fort, on which an Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded, probably by Ine of Wessex, in 681.

During the Middle Ages, Tetbury became an important market for Cotswold wool and yarn. The Tetbury Woolsack Races, Founded 1972, is an annual competition where participants must carry a 60-pound (27 kg) sack of wool up and down a steep hill (Gumstool Hill). The Tetbury Woolsack Races take place on the late May Bank Holiday, the last Monday in May each year (27 May for 2013).

Notable buildings in the town include the Market House, built in 1655 and the late-eighteenth century Gothic revival parish church of St Mary the Virgin and St Mary Magdalene and much of the rest of the town centre, dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Market House is a fine example of a Cotswold pillared market house and is still in use as a meeting place and market. Other attractions include the Police Bygones Museum. Chavenage House, Highgrove House and Westonbirt Arboretum lie just outside the town.

Tetbury has won five consecutive Gold awards in the Regional Heart of England in Bloom competition in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was category winner Best Small Town in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2010 Tetbury was Overall Winner of Heart of England in Bloom and won a Judges Discretionary Award for Community Achievement. Tetbury won Silver Gilt as a first-time entrant in the National Britain in Bloom Campaign in 2009 and a second Silver Gilt in Britain in Bloom in 2011. The Tetbury town crest features two dolphins.

Tetbury is situated in a landscape of gently rolling hills primarily used for farmland, including grazing of sheep and grain production. Its location is associated with a nearby major east-west trade or drovers trail, which would account for its early importance as a wool trade centre. Nearby to the west are Owlpen Manor, Beverston Castle and Calcot Manor. The Tetbury Avon, a tributary of the Bristol Avon, known locally as the Ingleburn rises to the north of the town.

Tetbury is renowned for its antique and bric à brac shops. The town centre also has a number of independent specialist food and clothing shops, banks, charity shops, estate agents and other shops including lifestyle clothing brand Overider and the Prince of Wales's original Highgrove Shop.

Tetbury has bus services which serve local towns. Tetbury railway station closed in 1964, and the nearest railway station is now at Kemble; the nearest major airport is Bristol Airport. General aviation uses Kemble Airport at Kemble. The former airfield at Long Newnton (1 mi southeast of Tetbury) was originally the home of the Cotswold Gliding Club, which has since moved 6 mi to the north to Aston Down. Tetbury is on the A433, with easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways. The A4135 originates in Tetbury and proceeds westerly through Beverston.

12 Most Beautiful Towns in England to Visit

What are the most beautiful towns to visit in England? The United Kingdom is obsessed with beautiful surroundings and countryside. England is attempting to blaze the trail and lead the other parts of the Kingdom. Yes, many of the most beautiful towns in the world are in England. Just anyone will have a hard time selecting the most beautiful towns in England to visit. However, we will attempt to list 12 of these based on certain yardsticks that all or most of us can agree upon. Some of these towns are coastal, rural, or castle towns. What we’re sure of is that almost everyone will find one or two of these beautiful towns attractive enough to see something lovely there during the next vacation.
12. Burford, Oxfordshire
Our starting point is Burford, a town on the River Windrush in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire. Tucked in the Cotswold Hills, Burford is often called the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds, and for good reasons.
This town derives its name from the Old English words ‘burh’ which can mean a ‘fortified town,’ ‘a hilltown and ford,’ and ‘the crossing of a river.’ That connotative meaning draws some mental picture, not so? Burford has been listed among the most picturesque towns in England, with its medieval bridge and stone houses together with the attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages.
11. Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire
Tewkesbury, a medieval market town and civil parish is the next. The Gloucestershire northern town has a significant history in the Wars of the Roses. Located at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon, the town is on the border with Worcestershire.
This town with a character all of its own is one of the few places in the Cotswold with buildings of black and white half-timbered. It’s a town to visit by those who love spending time on riverbanks.
10. Painswick, Gloucestershire
We still have good places to visit in Gloucestershire. This time it’s the beautiful town of Painswick. Mainly constructed of locally quarried Cotswold stone, the small town is known for the local Rococo Garden.
This is a budget-friendly town where you can explore a lot during your visit. That’s why we consider it one of the most beautiful towns in England to visit. You have a variety of attractive things to see such that you may be tempted to extend your vacation. Painswick Beacon, for example, is an apt place to go cycling and hiking.
9. Bakewell, Derbyshire
This market town and civil parish is a lovely place in England to visit by anyone who appreciates its local Bakewell pudding. There is no shortage of bakeries dispensing this delicious pudding. However, you can feel some difference if you buy your Bakewell Pudding while visiting the Old Original Bakewell Pudding shop. You can delightfully sample this delicious dessert of pastry with jam and frangipane and top it with toasted almonds.
Its market which is held every Monday is also a must-try if you’re in the town so that you can have something like unique plants, giftware, homeware, fashion items to tools, and carpets to take home.
8. Sandwich, Kent
We come across a Kent location on this our list. The historic town of Sandwich which is also a civil parish in the Dover District of Kent lies on the River Stour. It’s a cool place to visit as one of the Cinque Ports. You can still see many of the original medieval buildings in Sandwich.
Visitors to Sandwich can enjoy nature reserves where two world-class golf courses, namely Royal St George's and Prince's are situated. There are educational and cultural events to witness in this town with Bird Observatory and Nature Reserves which play home to varieties of birds, flora and fauna.

Tetbury, Cotswolds, England

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Next we are heading to the second largest town in the Cotswolds, Tetbury.
see my new website
For text, maps, links, videos and more.
It's situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, surrounded by landscapes of gently rolling hills, primarily used for farmlands, including flocks of sheep and grain production. We'll be looking at a few blocks right in the center of town. Tetbury is located in the southern Cotswolds, about 30 kilometers from Bath.
Our van parks in the nearby lot and we step out excited to explore yet another Cotswold village. Right away, next to the car park, we see the historic cobble lane called Chipping Steps, lined with picturesque stone cottages. These steps are an old entrance to the town, and that row of stone cottages running down the side were probably home to wool weavers.
During the Middle Ages,Tetbury was near a major East-West trail for trade, and so it became an important market for Cotswolds wool and yarn. The historic Market House is at the crossroads at the center of town. It was built in 1655 and it's the most famous building in Tetbury, listed as a historic protected property. We'll see more of this marketplace in a little bit.
But first, we're going for a walk down the main shopping street of town, called Long Street. This is where most of the retail action takes place. It's very easy to explore. Just walk all the way down one side and then cross over and walk back up the other side. Although it's called Long Street, it's just 300 meters from one end to the other.
The town is known as an architectural treasure, with many of the wool merchant's houses remaining the same as they were in the 16th and 17th centuries during the height of the town's prosperity from the wool trade, built from that famous Cotswold stone. Most of Tetbury is a protected conservation area. The center of Tetbury is especially renowned for its antique shops and independent boutiques.
This High Street has been named one of the UK's top ten favorite streets for shopping by Homes and Antiques Magazine. You'll find a number of specialist food markets selling cheese, breads and meats, along with clothing shops, banks, charity shops, estate agents, lifestyle, clothing. And there's even a store here that's owned by Prince Charles. It's called Highgrove, featuring organic food and branded homeware.
The gardens of the Prince's Highgrove estate are just two miles south of town and open to the public with guided tours. The town has many fine stone buildings in various styles, reflecting the architecture and fashions of the last 400 years. The town has pubs and hotels, including the Royal Oak Inn, with six bedrooms in an 18th century building that's been fully renovated.
Completing our walking round trip, returning to the top of Long Street brings us back to the Market House. This is one of the best surviving pillared market houses in England, and it has had many uses in the past, sales of wool especially, but also administration of the town, storage of the hand fire pump, and it was even used as a lockup until a police station was built.
For centuries, this building has been the hub of town and markets are still held here regularly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. And that completes our short visit to Tetbury. We've been visiting the Cotswolds on a day trip with a company called Mad Max, continuing along on our Mad Max tour of several Cotswold villages from our home base in the city of Bath. Our guide takes care of all the driving on these narrow country roads.
That's all for now. But we have other movies about villages in the Cotswolds, including a film about Castle Combe, Malmesbury, Bibury, Stow-on-the-Wold, Slaughter, Bourton-on-the-Water, Lacock and Cheltenham. Look for them in our collection. We frequently upload new movies, so please subscribe to our channel and click that little alarm bell so you'll be notified. And if you enjoyed the movie, how about thumbs up and we always welcome comments down below. Or if you have questions about the destination, make note and we will answer them. Thanks for watching.

“You guessed it right! It’s called Chipping Steps. The entire street looks like a staircase! Each cottage on this street has a nice little front garden. Those 16th century cottages once belonged to wealthy wool merchants. In the Middle Ages Tetbury became an important market town for wool and yarn in Cotswolds. The town has ample parking and certainly doesn’t feel overcrowded. I love how the elegance of urban town planning is comfortably situated in a beautiful countryside. When we were filming one local lady so elegantly described this town with one very profound saying. She said: its a sign of a civilised place when you can walk to buy a book. In today’s context this means - you are in the countryside but few steps and the world of civilisation is right in front of you. This is Tetbury Market House. The name describes its purpose. It was built in 1655. It is petty unique - the ground floor is missing and instead we see rows of orderly stocky pillars supporting lions share of the construction. Moving on we are on a very special street. This street is known for the vast number of Antique shops. At some point it had 31 antique shops on it! Even when window shopping strikes you with grandeur and stateliness”

Exploring The Cotswolds In England - Tetbury And Westonbirt Arboretum

A trip to Tetbury and Westonbirt Arboretum in the Cotswolds part of England over the Easter weekend. Tetbury is a small town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire.

The Cotswolds is an area of England, about 800 square miles which is famous for pretty little villages, bustling market towns and beautiful countryside, hills and landscapes.

Just south of Tetbury is Westonbirt - The National Arboretum.
Trees from around the world were first planted in the 1850s by the Victorian landowner Robert Holford and now there are over 15,000 trees around from the world including Britain, China, North America, Japan and Chile.

Westonbirt Arboretum is now run by the Forestry Commission and is open every day except Christmas Day.

The Cotswolds | 24 HOURS TO EXPLORE | Best Places To Visit In One Day

The Cotswolds is one of Britain’s most popular holiday destinations and somehow we just made it there after almost 2 1/2 years in England! This picturesque part of the country is very well known for its beautiful little villages, adorable shops, and cozy feel. We tried our best to hit as many key spots as possible. Basically, we started pretty far North and just drove South stopping anywhere that excited us. We ended up seeing a fair bit! Bourton-on-the-Water, Cirencester, Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold, Broadway Tower, Bibury, Burford, and St Edward’s Church!

England has so much to see The Cotswolds has been on our must-see list for forever and we are so glad we finally did get out to see some of it. As per our usual though, the weather did try and keep us at bay, but that was just a preview of these English storms we have rolling in right now.

We missed a lot of beautiful places in our haste though, we still desperately want to see Berkeley Castle, Westonbirt Arboretum, Tewkesbury Abbey, Sudeley Castle, and Castlecombe! Hopefully one day soon we will have more time to explore (with better weather!)

Tell us, where, in the UK, we should try and go to next! What would you like us to share? What did you think of the video? Leave a comment, like, and subscribe for more!!

THE COTSWOLD TOWN OF TETBURY

Visit to the town of Tetbury, Gloucester, Southern Gateway to the Cotswolds UK

COTSWOLD VILLAGES TOUR Including ENGLANDS PRETTIEST VILLAGE!

COTSWOLD VILLAGES TOUR Including ENGLANDS PRETTIEST VILLAGE!

In this weeks video we take things a bit easier (a short break from hiking, adventuring and camping before next weeks craziness) and spend the afternoon exploring a few villages in the Cotswolds in England. We start off by showing you the village voted as Englands prettiest village - Castle Combe! This area is filled with chocolate box houses, beautifully kept thatched roofs and has that unique Cotswold look throughout. We travel between Wiltshire and Gloucestershire which are just two of the five counties that the Cotswolds span across.

We show you a few nice places to eat including a lovely country pub where we grab some lunch before heading off to explore Bibury and the famous Arlington Rowe, a set of grade 1 listed cottages which were originally built as a wool store in the 14th century and converted to weavers houses in the 17th century (also featured in the movies: Bridget Jones Diary and Stardust). Finally we finish the day in Tetbury where we followed our noses into a lovely Italian restaurant for dinner.

To really enjoy the Cotswolds to the full we recommend having access to your own car, it’s a vast and scenic place to drive around and there are so many beautiful places to visit for all ages, we had a really calm and peaceful day out as you can see from the footage in this video.

Upcoming Videos!

Join us next time when we head off into the wilderness of Dartmoor National Park for a few days of hiking with just our backpacks, a sense of adventure and our first ever wild camping experience!

A British couple from just outside London, England. We got married in 2018 and decided instead of a honeymoon we’d travel the world together. We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this Youtube channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)
