Barcelona is a city and municipality of Spain, the capital of the homonymous province and the autonomous community of Catalonia. The metropolitan area of Barcelona, including in the urban region of Barcelona, has 5,029,181 inhabitants (2011), making it the sixth most populous city in the European Union. According to The Economist, in 2015 Barcelona is the fifteenth largest city in the secure world.
Barcelona has hosted several international events that have helped to consolidate and develop and provide global projection. The most relevant are the Universal Exhibition of 1888, the International Exhibition of 1929, the 1992 Olympics. Barcelona is on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, right in the center of the river deltas of the rivers Llobregat, southwestern, and Besos, northeast. The line of the coast of Barcelona has changed over time to the point that in prehistoric times came where today is located the Plaza Catalunya. The land on which settled the Barceloneta does not exist a century and a half before the construction of this neighborhood.
One of the attractions that Barcelona has built in recent years are its beaches. Thanks to the regeneration of the coast held in 1992, during the Olympic Games, Barcelona now has nine beaches and a bathing area they occupy more than 4.2 linear kilometers of coastline. Barcelona has a typical Mediterranean climate of humid and northern hue. According to the criteria of climatic classification of Köppen the climate of Barcelona is of type Csa ( Mediterranean ). The summer drought own Mediterranean climate is tempered by the summer storms.
The limit of Barcelona until 1859 the city decided to dispense with the outdated walls and grow in the plane of Barcelona to engulf the surrounding villages, now converted into city neighborhoods like Gracia, Poble Nou, Horta or Sants. This growth was made following the expansion plan designed by Ildefonso Cerda, known as Cerda Plan, with the now famous mesh orthogonal with chamfered crosses.
Barcelona has many parks. The best known are the Güell Park, located on the mountain of the same name, and Ciutadella Park, located in the center city, which can be found in the Parliament of Catalonia and the Barcelona Zoo, famous for hosting until his death the albino gorilla Snowflake. Recently inaugurated the Diagonal Mar Park, designed by Enric Miralles, and the Park of the Forum, where the enclosure is located hosted the Universal Forum of Cultures of 2004. Near Collserola, north of the city are the Nou Barris Central Park, one of the largest in Barcelona and Horta Maze park where are planted and the hedges trimmed so that they create a small maze where people spend fun times.
Historically Barcelona's economy is based on trade, thanks to its strategic geographical location has always allowed an intense commercial activity with France and the rest of Spain, in addition to all the territories of the Mediterranean, especially through its port. When the regime began to open up European markets, Barcelona rebounded strongly in automotive electronics, publishing, chemical, pharmaceutical, logistics and did convert Barcelona into the main industrial zone of the country. But the growth and prosperity of the city of Barcelona was expelling industrial zones off-limits due to the rising price of industrial land.
This is due to the fragmentation of the Catalan traditional entrepreneurial tissue reduces competitiveness, to the saturation of infrastructure, the largest foreign investment in Madrid about Barcelona, and the transfer of decision-making centers, tax offices and social Barcelona and also from other parts of Spain to Madrid. In industry Barcelona has had serious problems of relocation, relocation basically industries to countries with cheaper labor work, including the case of Braun, Philips and Samsung.
Given the scenario of loss of competitiveness by the economic crisis of 2008-2015, both the City of Barcelona, as the Generalitat of Catalonia nearly ten years ago that started a new program to develop a productive economy based on knowledge, creating large parks research, especially in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology.
For Barcelona, it is as important, or even more, leisure tourism as business. For the development of business tourism, the city has the Fira, Barcelona Trade Fair which organizes numerous exhibitions, shows, conferences and exhibitions for professionals, some of whom are among the first in the world, such as Mobile World Congress is the world's largest in its sector.

So what makes Barcelona such a great place to visit well keep watching to see what options we’d recommend if you only have a few hours to spend in this magnificent place
Getting from the cruise dock to the city is the 1st challenge. It is about a 25 min walk but most cruise lines run a shuttle bus and the cruise dock is also well served by taxis with fares around 8 euros each way.
Buses and taxis drop you close to the Maritime Museum and the impressive Columbus monument with both of these signifying the importance of Barcelonas maritime heritage
And these attractions are at the bottom of Barcelonas most famous street…. Las Ramblas.
This street is an absolute delight and if you do nothing else in Barcelona, then explore this street and the surrounding area. With its plentiful bars and restaurants and pretty courtyards filled with seating it’s a great place to enjoy Tapas and wonderful Sangria .
A must visit whilst on Las Ramblas is Barcelonas famous Boqueria indoor market. Simply wonderful to browse and treat yourself to local culinary delights. This is a real treat and it has a wonderful atmosphere.
Just off Las Ramblas is the Gothic Quarter with its narrow streets and gothic architecture. This area is beautiful and Barcelonas main cathedral is situated centrally within this part of the city. as well as palaces and picturesque squares with fountains and sculptures.
Attractions in Barcelona are fairly well spread across the city and hop on hop off buses can be a way to see the attactions away from the Las Ramblas area. Barcelona is well served by underground trains too as well as buses and of course taxis
Popular attractions include
The impressive arc de triomph and this was constructed in 1888 as a centre piece for a grand exhibition.. this area is filled with entertainers and people enjoying this pleasant recreational space. The zoo and more park spaces are also nearby
The Picasso museum is also a popular attraction and this part of the city is rich with art galleries and art museums also.
For lovers of the beautiful game the camp neu is a must visit and this magnificent stadium has a visitor centre and you are also able to book behind the scenes tours.
Many visitors to Barcelona will want to take the opportunity to see some of Anthony Gaudies architectural masterpieces. With the most visited attraction being the incredible Sagrada Familia cathedral. This is simply breathtaking and is an architectural marvel …it is also however a tourist trap and you’ll need to be prepared for a long queue to enter unless you pay extra for the skip the line tickets
Other popular Anthony Gaudie attractions include the beautiful Parc Guell with its magnificent sculptures and the Casa Mila concert hall which again offers guided tours of this wonderful building
It’s easy to forget that Barcelona is a great beach resort too
And If you have a late sail away - soak up the wonderful nightlife and enjoy wonderful sangria and soak up the atmosphere at a flamenco bar
And For those not wanting to head into the city why not take the cable car to top of Montjuic and explore the castle on top of the mountain
Barcelona is a great place to explore and has an excellent vibe ….A-few hours just isn’t enough and on our most recent visit we simply decided to soak up the atmosphere of Las Ramblas and it’s plentiful bars and restaurants
What a wonderful place and for us it’s a good job so many different cruise itineraries stop here .. it’s definitely not a place we’d ever get bored of visiting.
One of the best day trips outside of Barcelona is only 1 hr hour away in the Costa Brava. . This excursion we did on a beautiful winter day. It is for sure one of the top 10 day trips of Barcelona. With amazing rock formations, crystal clear waters and beautiful towns it is a can’t miss. We kayaked from Cala De La Fosca to Calella de Palafrugell. Terrassa is a city in the east central region of Catalonia, Spain, in the province of Barcelona, comarca of Vallès Occidental, of which it is the co-capital along with Sabadell. The name Terrassa derives from Latin Terracia, either from earlier Terracium castellum (“earthen castle”), or meaning terrace, area of flat land. It is the site of Roman Egara, a former Visigothic bishopric, which became a Latin Catholic titular see. Since 2004, it is again the see of a bishopric. The city is located in the Catalan Prelitoral depression (Depressió Prelitoral), at the feet of the Prelitoral mountain range (Natural reserve of Sant Llorenç del Munt) and the average altitude of the city is 277 meters above sea level. It is 20 and 18 kilometres from Barcelona and Montserrat respectively. Walking the Narrowest Street of Terrassa, Province Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸, 4K
Walking in Spain 🇪🇸: the Narrowest Street of Terrassa (Province Barcelona), 4K Terrassa is a city in the east central region of Catalonia, Spain, in the province of Barcelona, comarca of Vallès Occidental, of which it is the co-capital along with Sabadell. The name Terrassa may be a corruption of Late Latin terra ix ipsa, evolved into proto-Aragonese as terra-iš-sa (that avian/cool place), potentially conflated with terra-ès-sà safe/clean place.
Terrassa is the third largest city in Catalonia, after Barcelona and L’Hospitalet.
History The remains that have been found indicate that the area where Terrassa stands has been inhabited since prehistory. In 2005, during the construction of a tunnel for one of the city's railway lines, a prehistoric site was found in the Park of Vallparadís [1], with stone tools and fossils of hunted animals dating back 800,000 to 1,000,000 years, making this one of the oldest prehistoric sites in Europe.
Terrassa originated as the Roman town of Egara (Municipium Flavium Egara), which was founded during the time of the emperor Vespasian (69–79 CE), alongside the torrent of Vallparadís (nowadays an urban park) close to the Iberian town of Egosa, on the site of which some ceramics and coins have been found.
In the 17th century it was the sight of the Terrasa witchtrials, where 6 women were arrested, tortured and convicted of witchcraft. Five of them were hanged on 27 October 1619 near a present day railway bridge.
Other important remains from the Middle Ages are the former cathedral, the castle of Vallparadís (from 1344 to 1413 a Carthusian monastery and today a municipal museum) and the tower of the castle-palace of the count-king.
In the 19th century the city played an important role in the industrial revolution, specializing in woollen fabrics, and today there is a major Modernista legacy as a result of the city's importance at that time. Particularly notable Modernista buildings include the Masia Freixa (1907), the Vapor Aymerich, Amat i Jover textile mill (1907) (now the Museum of Science and Industry of Catalonia), the Principal theater (1920), the city hall (1902), the Alegre de Sagrera house/museum (1911), the Industrial School (1904), the Gran Casino (1920), the Parc de Desinfecció (1920), and the Independència market (1908). Terrassa is a partner city of the Art nouveau network, a European network of co-operation created in 1999 for the study, preservation and development of Art Nouveau.
