OAXACA, MEXICO | The Perfect Oaxaca Travel Itinerary (Coast to the Mountains in 2-3 weeks)
Oaxaca lies in the southwest of Mexico. It’s made up of a vast coastline and rugged mountains, with narrow valleys, canyons and ravines between them. Oaxaca is best known for its unique cuisine as well as its indigenous people and cultures. The largest indigenous groups are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen groups that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better than most others in Mexico thanks to the state's isolating terrain and commitment to honoring traditions. In this video, we will show you the perfect Oaxaca itinerary. This itinerary is recommended for at least a 14 day stay in Oaxaca and can be completed by public transportation, rental car, or a mix of both!
Stop 1: Puerto Escondido
How to get here: Direct flights from Mexico City and Guadalajara
Recommended stay: 3-5 days
Stop 2: Mazunte
How to get here: Bus from Puerto Escondido to Pochutla and tell the bus driver that you want to get off at San Antonio. From there, you’ll have to take a taxi or local collectivo.
Recommended stay: 1-2 days
Stop 3: Zipolite
How to get here: 20-minute taxi ride from Mazunte
Recommended stay: 1-2 days
Stop 4: San José del Pacifico
How to get here: Bus from Lineas Unidas Bus station in Zipolite directly to José del Pacifico
Recommended stay: 2-3 days
Stop 5: Oaxaca City
How to get here: Bus from San José del Pacifico main road to Oaxaca City (bus leaves every hour)
Recommended stay: 7 days including day trips as mentioned below
Stop 6: Mitla
How to get there? Take a bus or rent a car from Oaxaca City, which will take you here in approximately 1 hour.
Recommended stay: day trip
☑️ Mitla day tour from Oaxaca City (in combination with Hierve El Agua):
Stop 7: Hierve el Agua
How to get there? Located 70 kms or 43 miles from Oaxaca City, this is another site you can do as a day trip. You can rent a car or take a tour from Oaxaca. Alternatively, you can come by collectivo from Mitla.
Recommended stay: day trip
☑️ Day Tour from Oaxaca City to Hierve el Agua and Mezcal Distillery:
Stop 8: Pueblos Mancomunados
How to get there? There are buses to Cuajimoloyas and Benito Juárez that leave from the “second class” bus station in Oaxaca City a few times a day. The driver will drop you off near the “tourist office” where you can book your activities and accommodation.
Recommended stay: 1-5 days
Where to next?
After exploring the highlights of Oaxaca, you can continue your journey across other states in Mexico. The most common travel route goes to the southeast to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. It’s possible to take the ADO night bus from Oaxaca City, which takes about 12 hours.
Alternatively, you can head to the north towards Puebla and Mexico City. Puebla is another beautiful city and gateway to the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. It takes about 4 hours to get here.

Things to do in OAXACA, Mexico. The BEST tour of OAXACA!? MITLA, MARKETS, MEZCAL and MORE!
Looking for things to do in Oaxaca, Mexico? Come along with us on THE BEST TOUR OF OAXACA to Mitla, Tlacolula’s Sunday Market, Teotitlan del Valle, Don Agave Mezcal Distillery, Arbol del Tule, and Caldo De Piedra!
Hello fellow Country Collectors! Today our adventure is taking us to the east of Oaxaca city. We are starting at Mitla - one of the most famous sites of Zapotec Culture, and then continuing back towards Oaxaca stopping next at Tlacolula de Matamoros. This town is famed for their traditional Sunday Market, where we are going to try to find some delicious barbacoa - bbq goat (including the head)! The next stop will bring us to Teotitlan Del Valle where we will learn all about their famous weavings. We’ll be feeling thirsty by then, so the next stop on the tour is at Don Agave Mezcal distillery where we will tour the grounds and learn all about how this magical beverage is produced and of course how it tastes! Stumbling to our next stop, we won’t believe our eyes at what we see! The WIDEST tree in the world! Is this the mezcal talking? Haha.. Our last stop on this incredible tour will bring us to Caldo De Piedra, aka Stone Soup for a once in a lifetime dining experience! Come along with us and see what this region of Oaxaca has to offer! XOXO

Must Do Near Oaxaca City Mexico - El Picacho Hike #shorts
One of our favorite things we did on our trip to Oaxaca Mexico is the El Picacho hike. It was recommended to us by a local and it did not disappoint. The panoramic views at the top are so impressive! It’s located in the charming village of Teotitlan del Valle which is about 50 minutes drive from Oaxaca City. If you want to see more about our experience check out our Youtube video (second half of the Monte Alban video).

Travel to Mexico during covid comes with a new set of concerns you need to prepare for. Unlike other areas I have traveled to in Mexico recently, such as Quitano Roo, Oaxaca was on par with Merida in Covid awareness and safety precautions. Masks were worn by most folks. Hands, feet, bodies, and bags were all sprayed with sanitizer at most establishments. The spraying down of your body with sanitizer is a Covid prevention protocol that is even more intense than what is done in the Yucatan.
Also, Oaxaca city felt very safe with a good police presence everywhere near the city center. I felt extremely safe walking about early in the mornings around the town. Oaxaca is one of the safest places in Mexico, so I can see why many people would choose to move to Oaxaca or retire in Oaxaca.
If you are visiting Oaxaca or considering different places to live in Mexico, I would highly recommend the things on this list to get a feel for the city and its vibrant food culture. If the way to a man’s heart is through his belly, Oaxaca may win you over. Subscribe:

Cooking Mexican at a OAXACA COOKING CLASS & visiting TEOTITLAN MARKET | Teotitlan, Oaxaca, Mexico
Subscribe for more food and travel videos:
Chasing a Plate is in Teotitlan, Oaxaca, Mexico! And we're experiencing a Oaxaca cooking class!
Today we join Reyna Mendoza at her cooking school El Sabor Zapoteco in Teotitlan, a small Zapotec town outside of Oaxaca to learn how to cook some traditional Zapotecan dishes.
At Teotitlan market, we pick up some ingredients for a soup, a mole, a dessert and a cactus dish. Teotitlan is a Zapotec town outside of Oaxaca. The Zapotec people are the largest indigenous group in Oaxaca so we are cooking Zapotecan food today.
You always start with dessert before your main meal so we had hot chocolate and the traditional way is to make the hot chocolate with water. We had some Mexican sweet breads which we dipped into the hot chocolate, it was delicious.
Time to cook! We roast corn on the comal and grind corn and chillis on the metate. Beyond learning to cook, look where we're learning to cook, it's just beautiful, these grounds are really authentic. It's really, really nice.
After most of the prep and cooking is done we have have a menu of sageza which is like a mole, Oaxaca is known for having 7 famous moles but Reyna says in fact there's like a hundred, so this is just a type of mole that we're having. We're also having a soup and it's got lots of herbs and squash blossom and chicken in it, or chicken stock and then we're having some nopales or cactus in a chilli sauce with fresh cheese sprinkled on top and then we have our gorgeous desserts to finish and we spot some mezcal as well.
What an amazing day learning how to cook traditional Mexican food at a Oxaca cooking class with El Sabor Zapoteco i Teotilan.
We hope we've inspired you to eat and explore like a traveler, not a tourist.
To book your cooking class at El Sabor Zapoteco check out their website here:

Mexico - Visit OAXACA with KARMA TRAILS
Oaxaca State is considered one of the most emblematic region of Mexico. It's capital is OAXACA CITY, an icon of typical Mexican cities in the world, very rich of colonial art, architecture and vibrant cultural traditions.
TEOTITLAN DEL VALLE: this is a small village known for its textiles, especially rugs, which are woven on hand-operated looms, from wool obtained from local sheep and dyed mainly with local, natural pigments;
MONTE ALBAN: The most majestic of Oaxaca’s ancient ruins, Monte Alban, meaning “White Mountain,” is an ancient Zapotec capital and archaeological site with a spectacular mountain top location overlooking the valleys of Oaxaca. It is one of the culturally and historically significant places to visit in Mexico, and received the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 1987.
MITLA: is an archaeological site located just 46 km (28 miles) southeast of Oaxaca city, and is considered one of the most important places to visit the área. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, Mitla was once an important Zapotec religious and ceremonial center. Here you’ll find a series of structures and patios adorned in stonework mosaics. These ancient cut-stone mosaics, created by fitting together thousands of polished cut stones,
BEST Day Trips from Oaxaca to Hierve el Agua - 2022 Mexico Travel Vlog ep 3
Why should you book a day trip tour to Hierve el Agua? I did a day trip tour from Oaxaca through a tour group and was so glad I did! I discuss: how Zapotecs in a local village called teotitlan del valle weave rugs and textiles using traditional methods of cochinea bugs, how to get to hierve el agua, what to expect from this tour, where we at (buffet lunch, tourist trap but had delicious moles!), and a mezcal tasting tour. While you’re in Oaxaca, likely for Dia de Muertos day of the dead, you could book this tour and get out of the city for a few hours. It is also a nice break from day of the dead festival festivities. This hierve el agua oaxaca tour cost $60USD. Comment and let me know if you found this helpful!

We booked this tour through AirBnb after seeing it on Tangerine Travels. This is a great tour if you want to learn about the artisan culture in Oaxaca. Pack snacks as this tour runs straight through without stopping for lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing behind the scenes and learning the ancient methods used at each stop. Highly recommend!
Lucha Libre

We added this event last minute and bought tickets through Whatsapp. We decided to purchase front row which was a wise choice! The crowd & atmosphere was incredible! The fighters really embraced their roles which made the experience a fun one! This is an outdoor arena but situated under a large tent. Bring extra pesos for snacks, drinks, and merchandise. Street parking is available.
Hierve El Agua
Hours: 9am – 5pm
Cost: 25 pesos per person & 50 pesos for parking
Total time: Up to you!

We were so excited to hear that Hierve El Agua opened a couple weeks prior to our arrival into Oaxaca. This was our number one thing to do, and it did not disappoint! We recommend going as soon as they open. It’s about an hour and half from Oaxaca so leave as early as possible to arrive as they open. You’ll want to be sure to visit on a clear day as the road there turns into a very windy dirt road up the mountain with some very steep parts. If it rains, the road will become dangerous and there’s a couple bridges you must cross on the way that are prone to flooding. Tour buses are available for transport at the bottom of the mountain in the village below. There are 3 large pools to swim in and a short hike. You can bring a picnic and snacks, or they have vendors with everything you need there. It’s an absolutely stunning experience, we could have spent all day there!
Dia De Muertos
Hours: No set hours
Cost: Free!
Total time: Up to you!
Due to COVID, I don’t believe there was as much going on in El Centro as in the past years, but it was still a great experience to be a part of. There were a few main streets where most of the people gathered a few bands playing a few short parades. With the city décor, muchas ofrendas, face-painting, food & more it makes for a unique experience!
Temazcal
Hours: Hours vary per appointment
Cost: 500 pesos per person
Total time: 2 hours

This traditional sweat lodge is tucked away in a village 15 minutes from the center of Oaxaca. This experience comes with 30-50 minutes in the sauna and an hour-long full body massage. This was such a special tradition to experience and a fantastic way to end our trip. Highly recommend!
Wilson’s Tips for Oaxaca:
Hire a driver: our car rental plans fell through and we ended up connecting with a local through our Airbnb house manager. Not only was his pricing reasonable, but this also made our week effort free as we no longer had to worry about driving, parking or paying for gas. Sometimes hiring a local driver may be a cheaper option than renting.
Tacos Al Pastor: We highly recommend you search for local taco vendors that sell tacos al pastor! We tried as many places as possible and most were delicious and such a great price!
Picking an alebrije: Prior to choosing an alebrije tour, we recommend you ask if they offer an opportunity to discover what your own alebrije is. We toured the Jacob & Maria Angeles workshop and were pleased to discover what our alebrijes were and were able to take home our very own pieces.
