FAQs
========================================
Q: How long did it take?
A: My trip was 14 days.
Q: Which airport should I arrive at?
A: Having travelled from the other side of the globe, I arrived at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei. If travelling from Australia or Asia, there may be connecting flights to Kaohsiung International Airport on the south-west coast of Taiwan.
Q: How much did it cost?
A: You can see a cost breakdown of my trip at 12:37
Q: How did you pay for things or get local currency?
A: I just take money out from an ATM using my debit card. It has a small international transaction fee, but it’s minuscule if you only do it once or twice. You may be able to order foreign currency at better rates, but it’s not something I personally bothered with.
Q: Is it easy to find petrol stations?
A: Yes, you'll find one pretty much everywhere, including remote areas in the mountains! I always went with caution and ensured I had a full tank before entering remote areas, however to my shock, there were petrol stations, and even 7 Eleven stores in remote mountains! Just to be safe, I would highly recommend getting a full tank of petrol before going to the mountains.
Q: Which month did you go?
A: I visited mid November to early December and spent 14 days there.

15 Secrets & Things to do in Tainan, Taiwan
This is my ultimate travel guide for Tainan, Taiwan including 15 best things to do and best places to visit which I carefully selected, like Fort Zeelandia, Du Xiao Yue for its epic Dandan noodles, Chun Sui Tang - the inventor of bubble tea, mega gachapon machine and the eating bizarre chicken butts. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!
Download my FREE Tainan Guide
(including maps, photos and secret tips)
Sadly, #Tainan is not popular with foreign tourists even though it is the oldest city in #Taiwan. Tainan became a top priority on my bucket list for the simple reason that it was found by the Dutch in 1624. The city is home to Dutch VOC fortresses Zeelandia and Provintia which were massive fortifications for its time. I visited Tainan to find the remnants of my ancestors since I am Dutch myself.
Tainan is known by the Taiwanese as the food mecca of the country due to its many locally grown produce, from epic mango shaved ice desserts to Chun Sui Tang - the original restaurant where bubble tea was invented but also its delicious beef noodle bowls called dandan noodles at Du Xiao Yue.
My first stop was the Dutch Fort Provintia where the Dutch VOC's (Dutch East India Company) administrative heart of Taiwan was located. I was blown away to learn that the foundation of all these Dutch forts was made with a mortar recipe containing crushed oyster shells, sugar and sticky rice since cement was hard to come by on the island.
In the evening I went for dinner on the ancient Shennon street which is gorgeous during the evening for its small historic shops and cozy atmosphere. At a local street restaurant I went all out and tried their bizarre local delicacy; grilled chicken butts. One place where you should definitely eat is Du Xiao Yue, the oldest noodle shop in Taiwan founded in 1895 and order the Dandan noodles! Alternatively, try their milk fish, rice eel and incredible fried shrimp rolls. Let's not forget about the delicious beef soup and beef tongue and Win Chang restaurant..
The highlight of my visit was Fort Zeelandia, a massive Dutch VOC fortress on the Anping peninsula which the Dutch held onto until 1662 when the Ming Dynasty sent Koxinga to take over Formosa (Taiwan's original name) and banish the Dutch. Fort Zeelandia showcases a huge collection of Dutch artifacts from that time period. If you want even more Dutch history, check out the Merchant House for many ancient Dutch maps and VOC ship scale models, additionally visit the incredible treehouse, a warehouse completely engulfed by nature.
My favorite object was the scale model of Fort Zeelandia, the sheer size was absolutely mindboggling. The Dutch were besieged by Koxinga for 9 months which left them with no other option than to surrender after which Taiwan became Chinese territory and the Dutch retreated back to Batavia in Indonesia, nowadays known as Jakarta.
Tainan doesn't really have a big nightlife, for good parties you'll have to go to either Taipei or Kaohsiung but luckily Tainan has one major nightclub called MUSE Tainan where I had a great time drinking and socializing with the locals. For just 700 NT ($25 USD) it was an all-you-can-drink party. It was a crazy experience seeing not many people at the bar even with it being an all-you-can-drink event, I guess the Taiwanese know their limits very well.
In conclusion, I had a fantastic time in Tainan and I will consider visiting Tainan in the near future to see what other great places this magical city has to offer so I can create another #TravelGuide for you guys!

From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2018-5-6:
Tainan Judicial Museum
The Tainan Judicial Museum (No. 307, Sec. 1, Fuqian Rd., West Central Dist.; Chinese) complex, inaugurated as the Taiwan District Court in 1914, is considered one of Taiwan’s three supreme Japanese-era works of architecture.
Blueprint Culture and Creative Park
This is a narrow-lane complex of renovated simple, cement-walled dormitories originally built by the Japanese to house judicial-authority employees. The dorm buildings are today home to an attractive cluster of artisanal outlets and creative eateries.
Little Secret
The “hidden-away” Little Secret (No. 17, Ln. 689, Sec. 1, Ximen Rd., South Dist.; restaurant is the go-to foodie haunt here. The emphasis is on bringing cultural-creative flourishes to familiar Taiwanese noodle classics, each dish celebrating a regional icon ingredient.
Old Taiwan Magistrate Residence
The Old Taiwan Magistrate Residence (No. 1, Weimin Street, East Dist.; built in 1900, was used as a residence by visiting Japanese royals, most notably the future Emperor Hirohito during his 1923 grand Taiwan inspection.
The Place Tainan
This new boutique hotel is situated at one end of a monstrous block-style retail/entertainment/leisure complex. The contemporary-décor hotel has minimalist-theme guestrooms with strong black and white schemes.
Lin Mo-Niang Park
Overlooking the south side of Anping Harbor is a giant 16m-high hilltop statue of Lin Mo-Niang located in the breezy Lin Mo-Niang Park. Lin was the young mortal maiden who became the immortal Mazu, Goddess of the Sea, protector of seafarers.
Eternal Golden Castle
This “castle,” actually a fort (No. 3, Guangzhou Rd., Anping Dist.), was built by the Chinese in the 1870s as protection against grasping colonial powers. Massive bastions are found at the ends of the four high, thick walls, with a moat making enemy access even more difficult.
Taijiang National Park Visitor Center
Taijiang National Park ( is a watery world of estuaries, sandbars, tidal flats, old irrigation canals and small-craft shipping channels, mangrove swamps, wetlands, and aquaculture farms. The white-walled buildings of the visitor complex, built on stilts above retired fish farms, resemble traditional fishermen dwellings and circle a faux “lagoon.”
Anping Fort
This stronghold, originally called Fort Zeelandia, was built at the north-end head of a great sometimes sandbar/sometimes silt island (at high tide) that jutted out from the mainland.
Anping Tree House
Old Tait & Company Merchant House (No. 108, Gubao St., Anping Dist.) and, directly behind, the Anping Tree House, were both built by a British trading firm after the Second Opium War forced China to open ports to Western trade in 1858. The treehouse, originally conjoined warehouses, has been completely overrun by massive banyan trees, creating a fairytale maze.
Chou’s Shrimp Rolls
This restaurant (No. 125 Anping Street, Anping Dist.) is one of the best restaurants in Anping serving shrimp rolls, a local the delicacy.
Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields
Just south of the fishing village of Beimen are the Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields, Taiwan’s oldest salt fields, created in 1818. This site is a showcase example of how the bottom of evaporation ponds were paved with pottery shards, producing cleaner salt and making harvesting easier.
Taiwan's Oldest City: Tainan Top Attractions (Anping District)
Tainan is the former capital of Taiwan and its oldest city. It's also often referred to as Taiwan's food capital too. In this vlog, we visited the old historic Anping District where everything was in walking distance to each other.
