The largest city in Slovakia, as well as being the capital, Bratislava lies on the River Danube and borders both Austria and Hungary. Come here for a trip to the imposing Bratislava Castle, perched on a plateau above the city and originally built in the 10th century.

Slovakia is home to almost 2,500 caves, and more are being discovered as time goes on, with some 400 having been explored to date. The entire Slovak Karst region of caves has UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and if you like spelunking then you can’t miss a trip to one of the spectacular caves in the region.

Passing through the region of Liptov, from Liptovský Mikuláš to Ružomberok, one must notice a huge water area of the dam Liptovská Mara. It is the largest water reservoir in Slovakia in terms of the confined water volume.
The reservoir, namesake of one of the flooded communities, was built in the years 1970-1975. With the principal aims firstly to palliate the floodrisk on the river Váh and secondly for the production of power.

Liptószentmiklóstól Poprád felé haladva nem maradhat észrevétlenül a hatalmas vízfelület a Liptovská Mara, ún. Liptói tenger. A vízmennyiséget nézve, ez a legnagyobb víztározó Szlovákiában.
A vízierőmű 1970 – 1975-ben épült és nevét az itt elárasztott faluk egyike után kapta. Elsősorban azért épült, hogy a Vág vízgyűjtőterületén csökkenjen az árvízveszély és a villamos energia termeléshez is szükséges.
Az építkezés során több falut is teljesen kitelepítettek és elárasztottak. A víz elöntött sok történelmi műemléket, melyek közül a legértékesebbeket szétszedték, újból felépítették és így ezek Pribylinában a Liptói falumúzeum (Múzeum liptovskej dediny v Pribyline) részévé váltak.
A Liptovská Mara partján a legjelentősebb üdülőközpont a Liptovký Trnovecben található kemping – Mara Camping. A közeli strand, sporteszközkölcsönző, hajókikötő, kitűnőszörfözési és vitorlázási lehetőségek teszik Liptovský Trnovec-et oly vonzóvá. What is there to do in Slovakia? Well, a lot, it turns out! From exploring the capital city of Bratislava, to spending time in the Tatra Mountains, to eating dumplings - and if you like to drink, they have a huge selection of local beers, wine and a number of spirits (yes we did do a few shots as part of our research)! But most amazingly for us, is that in a short train ride out of the cities, you can be in the mountains, covered in snow and checking out some amazing views. So whether its hiking, snow shoeing, or skiing - you'll be spoilt. Here's how we spent a long / fun weekend in Slovakia - our best tips to maximise your stay and time over there. Discover with us the most amazing things to do in High Tatras & Top High Tatras Attractions. If you like skiing or snowboarding in winter or hiking in summer, High Tatras is the right place for you. You will easily fall in love with beautiful nature, splendid grand hotels and little picturesque villages such as Starý Smokovec or Tatranská Lomnica. The most famous attraction is “Štrbské mountain lake“ where you can get by a cog rail. In summer, you can rent a boat here and in winter the surrounding area is popular for winter sports. From here you can hike to beautiful Popradské pleso which is a magnificent place to be thanks to its lake and numerous trees. If you are not scared of heights, take a cable car to Lomnický peak, the 2nd highest peak of the mountains. When you come in winter, you cannot miss Tatra Ice Dome on Hrebienok, which is full of ice sculptures. We recommend you visit some of the few aqua parks in wintertime, they are filled with thermal waters and they provide many adventures.
