CHICKASAW NATIONAL RECREATION AREA | SULPHUR, OKLAHOMA
Day 26 of our road trip we spend about half a day in Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur, Oklahoma. We didn't realize there was so much history in this area. This park was originally Sulphur Springs Reservation in 1902, with bath houses because in the late 1800's early 1900's people used hot springs to bathe in and drink because they thought they provided healing. 4 years later it became Platt National Park (1906) then in 1976 it was redesignated as a National Recreation area. We viewed a few springs and some man-made waterfalls/dams that the CCC constructed in this park.

America's Best Resort, THE GREENBRIER! - #1 Hotel in the USA
Today we travel to our favorite hotel and resort, The Greenbrier. The Greenbrier is Americas Resort and I think America's best resort. This is where you stay in America. The Greenbrier is located it White Sulphur Springs West Virginia. The resort sits on 6,500 scenic acres in the Allegheny Mountains. People have been making the journey to White Sulphur Springs because that waters here have been know far and wide to be healing. The Greenbrier is the place where presidents and royalty stay, being that it is the #1 hotel in America. The Greenbrier has had guests such as Davey Crockett and over 26 US Presidents! In World War II this luxury resort was turned into a hospital. When the was was over the Greenbrier hired famous American designer Dorthey Draper to renovate the grand resort and give it a bold new personality. Draper worked her magic by adding bright colors, oversized patterns and an artists touch. Every room in the Greenbrier is over the top.
There is so much to do at the Greenbrier. Make no mistake, Golf is King and this resort. The Greenbrier has 3 championship 18 hole courses, a prestigious gold academy, and courses designed by Jack Nicholas. My family is not into golf, so we sign up for the ancient sport of Falconry. We are able to get up close and personal with Big Birds of prey hawks, falcons, and owls. We learn about the different birds and the sport of Falconry. Falconry is the training of birds of prey to not hunt for themselves but to hunt for their trainer or falconer. We all got to participate. And had an opportunity to have one of the magnificent birds land on our gloved hands.
Mr. Travel Bug and his friend also signed up for the Sporting Clay Course. Their is also horseback riding, Jeep off roading, mixology and painting classes, white water rafting, mountain climbing and so much more.
I find that my favorite thing to do is relax in the Greenbrier Spa and take in the waters. This is one of the oldest spas in the country. They have been performing hydrotherapy treatments for 250 years and other spa services.
There are so many places to choose from to eat. Drapers Café, Sam Sneed's, a sushi bar, pizzeria. The hotels main dining room is jacked required for it's old school dining experience. Prime 44 is the resorts signature steak restaurant. And let me just say if you are ever lucky enough to visit the Greenbrier, their 5 onion soup and lobster mashed potatoes should not be missed.
What really sets this resort apart is the underground bunker. The Greenbrier offers tours of the bunker daily. The bunker was a US secret for over 30 years. it was a secret bunker that Congress was going to live in if DC was ever under nuclear attack. The man who owned the Greenbrier also owned the railroad. When ever anyone in government would travel by train, the government would crazy over pay for their ticket and that is how they funneled the money to build this massive underground bunker. The Bunker was discovered in the early 90's by a Cleveland man, a professor. The professor was doing research on Hiroshima and how the only thing to survive the bomb was a bank because of its giant blast door. The professor then began to research the company that made these doors able to withstand a bomb and looked up their clients. It turns out, The Greenbrier the #1 hotel in the USA, purchased 3 of these blast doors. What!!!! So now that the cat is out of the bag it is open for tours.

Day Trip to Sulphur Springs 🥛🐮 (FULL EPISODE) S7 E7
Back in the day, it was the natural springs that brought travelers to town. Sadly, those springs have dried up, but fortunately the town still flows with things to do.
When you first arrive, head toward the action on the Sulphur Springs Town Square (which is actually a pentagon. Ha!). On the grassy lawn you can lounge, play chess or visit the Hopkins County Veterans Memorial. They also boast the prettiest glass public toilets you’ve ever seen. Part art, mostly functioning restroom, the stall has a two-way mirror, so you can enjoy the outside show while you attend to your private matters, and no one can see you inside.
Smack in the middle of town square, you’ll find the Hopkins County Courthouse. Constructed in 1884, the Romanesque revival architecture makes this building one of the finest courthouses in Texas.
Got Milk? Sulphur Springs does, and you’re sure to have the “dairy” best time at the Southwest Dairy Museum learning about the history of the dairy industry and the process of making milk. You can even test your milking skills on the mechanical cow or grab an ice cream at the soda fountain!
Another must-see stop is the Leo St. Clair Music Box Collection. This collection of over 150 music boxes includes sculptures you’d never expect to find like a lacy gun and a stubborn donkey. And the best part is that all of them still play music! You’ll find this Texas curiosity tucked away in the Sulphur Springs Library.
No luck on the lake? Don’t worry, there’s plenty of fish to chow down on around the lake including at A.J.’s Fish House in nearby Alba, TX. It’s an all-you-can-eat fried feast. So forget about your diet, slip on your comfiest pair of pants and devour mountains of cornmeal battered catfish, chicken and shrimp to your stomach’s content.
If you’re starving on the Square, head to The Potato House and greet the town’s favorite mascot. Here, you’ll find potatoes come filled with everything from broccoli cheese soup to chicken fried chicken. You can’t go wrong with any tater, but for those who like it hot — go for the “Easy Rider,” which is piled high with jalapeno, hot sausage and pepper jack cheese.
If you know bass fishing, then you know Lake Fork. Twenty minutes outside of town, this 39-mile lake is full of Texas-sized bass. The largest fish caught in its waters weighed 18.18 pounds and remains the Texas record! So grab your buddies and have the ultimate battle to see who can catch the most behemoth bass. There are lots of friendly local guides, and we highly recommend Mike McFarland who can show you all the tricks. And thankfully, if you reel in more branches than bass, there are plenty of other fish in the lake — no, really! Try fishing for Black and White Crappie or Sunfish.

We never expected to find a lively, revitalized town square with lots of great restaurants, shopping and fun things to do.

Sulphur Springs Camp | Bend Texas
Welcome to a brief drive through Sulphur Springs Camp. This campground is located near Bend Texas in San Saba county. This area is part of the Texas Hill Country. The river winds and bends from just south of Lubbock Texas through several lakes and reservoirs and ultimately empties southeast of Matagorda Bay in to the Gulf of Mexico.
Along this beautifully landscaped river lies several wonderful areas for camping. One of those campgrounds is named Sulphur Springs Camp. Join us as we take a quick peek at this great looking campground.

On the Colorado River, six miles below the village of Bend, there is a beautiful spring that has a long history as a camp and health resort. As early as 1850, people came from all over the state to drink and bathe in the waters of this spring. Today Sulphur Springs is still a strong spring that flows hundreds of gallons of pure sulphur water per minute.
