S1 – Ep 414 – Stutterheim!
Our journey through Stutterheim was a pleasant surprise. As we drove along the main road, we unexpectedly came across the Engine Museum, which, despite being closed, generously opened its doors for us, providing a fascinating experience. Our next stop was the old Bethel Mission Church, where we were disheartened to witness the near-total destruction of this nearly two-century-old structure. However, our spirits were lifted when we discovered the train station and learned that the trains were once again running from Johannesburg to East London. Adding to the delight, we explored the nearby forest, just on the outskirts of town. Stutterheim proved to be a memorable and enjoyable visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #stutterheim

This channel documents my adventures travelling around Southern Africa in my caravan.
Two years ago I left the big city of Cape Town, towing my caravan and a speedboat with my lovely cat for company, never to return to the big city. I'll be documenting my adventure and showing caravan parks that I spend time at in Southern Africa as well as some other subjects of interest to caravanners and adventurers in general.
This channel takes an in-depth look at smaller and off-grid living in Southern Africa. The tiny house movement is small in Southern Africa, but is growing exponentially very quickly.
Southern Africa is vast and has areas of great beauty with weather that is unique and superb. These videos will interest adventurers of all ages.
There are still ways to live in this world that allow one to wander the world, as John Wayne used to do in the old western movies. As I get older I have the choice to sit in four walls, watch TV and get grumpy, or go off and have an adventure in my old age. I've decided to choose the adventure and I'm surprised at what I've found. I'm seeing some great places and having some fantastic experiences.
Hopefully these videos will bring out your inner 'John Wayne'.

AUCTIONEERS NOTE – THE HISTORY OF OLD THOMAS RIVER – NARRATED BY JEFF SANSOM.
The quaint little village of Old Thomas River is situated on the N6 between Stutterheim and Cathcart. It is 5km off the N6 to the left if you are traveling from Stutterheim. Old Thomas River forms the center of the Thomas River conservancy consisting of 33 000 hectors of prime farmland. It was named by Theodorus van der Kemp in 1800 after Thomas Bentley who was shot by a bushman with a poison arrow while crossing the river. The river was named Thomas River in memory of him.
Everything that needed to be transported to the north had to travel through Thomas River from Port Rex (East London) in those early days until they decided to build a railway. The train line was started in East London in 1876 and had reached Thomas River in 1878. The 9th frontier war had broken out and a fort was built at each corner of the original railway station building to defend themselves in case of attack. There was no anger or fighting at Thomas River and the forts were never used, three are still standing to this day, with the fourth making way for the new and current station building built in 1926. The 1926 station building is currently the home of the historians who restored Old Thomas River, Jeff and Ann Sansom.
Another interesting fact, was a British soldier during the Anglo Boer war that guarded the railway line and donated the barracks to Thomas River as a school at the end of the war in 1902. It was a school up until the 1950’s and when I arrived I kept it a place of learning and made it into a library. 2 British soldiers are buried in the Thomas River cemetery. They were killed by accident, one drowning and the other falling off the Gilfillan Bridge in the dark, Christopher Thompson and William Badman.
In 1860 Prince Alfred (Port Alfred is named after him) son of Queen Victoria had breakfast at Thomas River.
Queen Elizabeth passed through Thomas River on the Royal Visit to South Africa in 1947.
In 2008 Prince William and Prince Harry had lunch in Thomas River during a charity ride and all of the 100 motor bikes ridden were donated to the Doctors in Africa on its completion.
In 3 different centuries we were visited by royalty, which up until a few months ago 3 of the four were still living.
The Italian prisoners of the 2nd world war where tasked to build 13 tunnels between Stutterheim and Queenstown. The gradients were getting too steep for the increasing load for the steam engines. The tunnels are all on the right side of the N6 and the station at Old Thomas River closed in 1948. The rest of the village kept operating with a Post Office, Trading Store, Blacksmith Shop, a Farmer Co-op, and the school.
In 2001 after a Thomas River Mountain Bike Challenge, the wonder that was Old Thomas River was shared with Jeff and after a visit, a 20 year journey began. As a historian and lover of anything old and unusual, this was the perfect place to showcase history.
Today we are proud of:
A library showcasing not only many book collections but a collection of early communication and photography.
A museum of early transport with wagons and carts, antique bottles and blacksmith tools.
A heritage museum showcasing bushman paintings.
We have a museum of early film and sound.
We have two notable collections. One with Marjorie Courtney Latimer and the other Joan Harrison.
The Ramble Restaurant is made up of a cozy pub area perfectly situated to welcome all the guests and explorers alike. There is a 100+ seater dining hall that has endless possibilities and often used for functions like weddings, birthday parties, school farewell dances, events, etc. Off the dining hall is a very large enclosed deck area and another pub area.
The beauty of the Old Thomas River Village is further extended to the option of staying over to enjoy its facilities to its fullest.
THIS A MONUMENTAL SALE WITH MUCH HISTORY, VALUE AND SIGNIFICANCE TO THE EASTERN CAPE AND SOUTH AFRICA. YOU WILL HAVE TO AGREE IT IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO OWN THIS ENTIRE VILLAGE!
