Hiking Ramsey's Draft Wilderness
This a brief introduction to the Ramsey's Draft Wilderness, a 6,577 acre area located in the North River District of the George Washington National Forest in the Alleghany Highlands of western Augusta County, Virginia. In this part of Virginia, a draft is any creek, stream, or small river. It is an interesting local/regional term and many places throughout the region are named after the local drafts. Ramsey's Draft Wilderness is no exception, named after its main drainage. Besides the draft itself, other notable features of the area are some nice rock formations, some massive Old Growth hardwoods and hemlocks, Civil War history, and evidence of old homesteads from the past. There are approximately 24 miles of trail in the area, with the main access being at the Mountain House Picnic Area off Route 250 near the community of West Augusta. It is here that this short adventure begins, hiking a few miles up the Ramsey's Draft Trail, crossing the draft multiple times. At the time of recording this video, the region was experiencing a moderate drought and the stream crossings were pretty simple. At times of high water, this trail could be difficult or even impassable. This area is also especially prone to flash flooding. Use caution and good judgement if you plan to visit this area after any period of extended/heavy rain or snow melt. I hope you enjoy the video. Thanks so much for watching!
