Places to see in ( Stretford - UK )
Stretford is a town in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. Lying on flat ground between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, Stretford is 3.8 miles to the southwest of Manchester city centre, 3.0 miles (4.8 km) south-southwest of Salford and 4.2 miles (6.8 km) northeast of Altrincham. Stretford is contiguous with the suburb of Chorlton-cum-Hardy to the east, and the towns of Urmston to the west, Salford to the north, and Sale to the south. The Bridgewater Canal bisects the town.
Historically in Lancashire, during much of the 19th century Stretford was an agricultural village, with its own market, known locally as Porkhampton, a reference to the large number of pigs produced for the nearby Manchester market. It was also an extensive market gardening area, producing more than 500 long tons (508 t) of vegetables each week for sale in Manchester by 1845. The arrival of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894, and the subsequent development of the Trafford Park industrial estate in the north of the town, accelerated the industrialisation that had begun in the late 19th century. By 2001 less than one per cent of Stretford's population was employed in agriculture.
Stretford has been the home of Manchester United Football Club since 1910, and of Lancashire County Cricket Club since 1864. Notable residents have included the industrialist, philanthropist, and Manchester's first multi-millionaire John Rylands, the suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, the painter L. S. Lowry, Morrissey, Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis and Jay Kay of Jamiroquai.
Longford Cinema, opposite Stretford Mall, on the eastern side of the A56 Chester Road, is perhaps the most visually striking building in the town. The Great Stone, which gave its name to the Great Stone Road, where it was located until being moved in 1925, is one of Stretford's most easily overlooked landmarks. Stretford Cenotaph, opposite the Chester Road entrance to Gorse Hill Park, was built as a memorial to the 580 Stretford men who lost their lives in the First World War.
Longford Park is the largest park in Trafford, at 54 acres (22 ha). It includes a pets' corner, botanical garden, bowling greens, children's play areas, and an athletics stadium, and is the finishing point of the annual Stretford Pageant. Stretford Public Hall was built in 1878 by John Rylands. Stretford Cemetery was designed by John Shaw and opened in 1885.
Trafford Town Hall stands in a large site at the junction of Talbot Road and Warwick Road, directly opposite the Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Work on the building, designed by architects Bradshaw Gass & Hope of Bolton, began on 21 August 1931. The Union Church was formed in 1862, with John Rylands as its patron .
Stretford Metrolink station is part of the Manchester Metrolink tram system, and lies on the Altrincham to Bury line. Trams leave about every six minutes between 7:15 and 18:30, and every 12 minutes at other times of the day. Stretford has been the home of Manchester United Football Club since 1910, when the club moved to its present Old Trafford ground, the western end of which is still unofficially called the Stretford End.
Old Trafford was originally the home of Manchester Cricket Club, but became the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club in 1864 upon that club's formation. The ground is on Talbot Road, Stretford, where it has been since 1856. Similar to its counterpart, one end of the Old Trafford cricket ground is called the Stretford End.

10 Most Loved Towns in England
What are the most loved towns in England? There is something about the towns in England that makes them famous the world over. Could it be because, in England, there is always a carnival or festival in one place or the other? You probably have to look past the large towns and cities to discover them. That's why we want to look at these 10 most loved towns in England to see why they're loved.
Some of these towns are neatly tucked away, in rolling green hills, on rugged cliffs, near forests, or moorland. Others have beaches and rivers. There’s something about these quintessential towns in England that makes them loved. Follow along and see if you too would love these most loved towns in England.
10. Selby
We start off with Selby a town in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. It is a market town and civil parish in the Selby District. With its status as a town council, Selby is 14 miles south of York on the River Ouse. The town with a population of 14,731 is one of the 10 most loved towns in England.
There used to be a large shipbuilding industry in this town which was historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It was also an important port on the Selby Canal that was bringing trades from Leeds. Something to be loved about this town is the market towns and picturesque villages. It’s one of the most loved also because house prices there are lower and people get more for their money.
9. Frome
When Frome was listed among one of the “Best Places to Live in Britain” by a popular ranking, we know it’s going to be one of the most loved towns in the country. Now, this town and civil parish in eastern Somerset is the ninth most loved town in England. Frome is built on uneven high ground on the Mendip Hills, at the eastern end and it centers on the River Frome.
The town about 13 miles south of Bath and the largest in the Mendip District of Somerset is loved for being welcoming, charming, and vibrant. A part of the parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome, it has a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty. People from outside the town love it for its tranquility and antiquity.
8. Maldon
The next of the most loved towns in England is Maldon. The town council also in the ceremonial country of North Yorkshire is another town in the county on this list. Of course, North Yorkshire has a lot of loved towns, and this civil parish on the Blackwater estuary in Essex is just one of them. It is the seat of the Maldon District and the starting point of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.
Known for Maldon Sea Salt being produced in the area, the town with a population of 14,220 is loved for being a good place to retire. You will find a lot of elderly people from whom you can learn about the rich English history and culture
7. Hart
We would love to include Hart here even though it is a local government district. It’s in Hampshire and derived its name from the River Hart with its council based in Fleet. Formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act of 1972, it doesn’t have city status. However, it’s a merger of the urban district of Fleet, and the Hartley Wintney Rural District.
We consider Hart one of the most loved places in England after it was named the best place to live in Britain by the 2017 Halifax Quality of Life study. It’s indeed one of the richest and least deprived areas in the entire United Kingdom, according to the Indices of Deprivation 2015. The town ranked 326th least deprived out of 326 local authorities in England. That’s why people love Hart.

Walking in Stretford part 1 • 4K60
Stretford is an inner suburb of Manchester, not to be confused with Stratford in east London. It's a typical late Victorian/Edwardian suburb with a dreadful, ill-conceived 1960s redevelopment in the middle - they turned the entire central shopping district into a mall. Other parts are quite nice, however, and there are still a few historic buildings although some are vacant. Here we walk from the Metrolink tram stop to Victoria Park via the library.

The Bridgewater Canal | Stretford, Manchester 4K Walking Tour
Hello, Everyone.
Join me on this mesmerising walking tour from Stretford to Chester Road, following the scenic trail along the historic Bridgewater Canal. Join me on a journey through time, following in the footsteps of generations past and experiencing the beautiful glide of boats over the tranquil waters, as well as the soothing presence of geese as they delicately cross their domain.
In this immersive film, I welcome you to experience the Bridgewater Canal's beauty and charm, which demonstrates human technical ingenuity and nature's enduring fascination. As we walk along the towpath, enjoy in the sights and sounds of this ageless waterway, where every turn unveils a new vista of historic significance.
A little bit of history and redevelopment projects,
📌 Stretford,
The origin of the name Stretford is street on a ford across the River Mersey. The principle road through Stretford, the A56 Chester Road, follows the line of the old Roman road from Deva Victrix (Chester) to Mamucian (Manchester), crossing the Mersey into Stretford at Crossford Bridge, built at the location of the ancient ford.
During much of the 19th century, Stretford was an agricultural village known locally as Porkhampton due to the large number of pigs produced for the nearby Manchester market. It was also an extensive market gardening area, described by one writer as the garden of Lancashire
📌 Bridgewater Canal,
The Bridgewater Canal is a 65km (39 mile) canal stretching from Runcorn to Leigh in the North West of England. The Bridgewater Canal opened in 1761. Built to transport the Duke of Bridgewater's coal from his mine at Worsley, it has a special place in history as the first canal that cut across country rather than following an existing river course.
📌 Bridgewater Way,
The Bridgewater Way is a regeneration project which, when completed, will create a 39-mile (65km) leisure route for walkers and cyclist along the Bridgewater Canal.
