Sravanabelgola: A Magical Journey to the Land of Jainism
Shravanabelagola is a historical town in Karnataka, India, famous for its Jain basadis (temples) and monolithic statues of Jain tirthankaras (religious leaders). The most famous of these statues is the Gommateshwara Bahubali, a 57-foot-tall statue of Bahubali, the 22nd tirthankara. Shravanabelagola is a major pilgrimage site for Jains and is also popular with tourists.
Here are some additional details about Shravanabelagola:
The town is located in the Hassan district of Karnataka, about 160 kilometers from Bangalore. The Gommateshwara Bahubali statue was built in the 10th century CE by Chamundaraya, a minister of the Hoysala king, Vishnuvardhana. The statue is carved out of a single block of granite and is the tallest monolithic statue in India. Shravanabelagola is also home to a number of other Jain basadis, including the Chandragupta Maurya Basti, which is believed to have been built by Chandragupta Maurya, the first emperor of India. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
