Armenian city of Spitak today after the 1988 devastating earthquake
The Armenian Report crew took a trip to the city of Spitak to capture what the city looks like 34 years after the devastating earthquake.
-
On December 7, 1988 at 11:41 local time in Armenia a devastating earthquake took place in the cities of Spitak, Leninakan (Gyumri) and Kirovakan (Vanadzor). These cities were greatly affected with large losses of life and devastating effects to buildings and other structures. A number of the smaller outlying villages away from the larger population centers were also severely affected. The earthquake killed 25,000 and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

Armenia, nestled in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia, is a nation rich in history and culture, often considered one of the earliest cradles of civilization. Known for its scenic beauty, it features rugged mountains, ancient monasteries, and lush forests. Armenia's capital, Yerevan, is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, offering a blend of historical architecture and modern vibrancy. The country takes pride in its unique traditions, exquisite Armenian cuisine, and being the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD. Among its cultural treasures is the medieval Geghard Monastery, partially carved out of a mountain. Armenia's deep historical layers, combined with its warm hospitality, make it a captivating destination for travelers.

FAVOURITE Place in ARMENIA | SOVIET Architecture | Urbex | History | TRAIN BEERS (Gyumri) 🇦🇲
My favourite place (and favourite video) in Armenia! Join us to discover Gyumri, once devastated by an earthquake, and still rebuilding.
We'll see the beautifully rebuilt town centre, and a towering monument, before heading to the awesome Black Fortress - dating back to the Russian Empire.
Next we'll visit a restaurant where the beers are served on toy trains, known as the Gyumri Express. After lunch, we'll see the abandoned hospital - a constant reminder of the damaged caused by the quake in 1988.
Heading into Central park, we'll take on the rollercoaster - and a ferris wheel with suprisingly stunning views over the city.
As we start to close the day, we'll visit some unbelievable soviet architecture left decaying in suburbia - and we'll finish with some armenian cuisine back in the centre!

WIKIPEDIA:
Gyumri (Armenian: Գյումրի,[a] pronounced [ɡjumˈɾi]) is an urban municipal community and the second-largest city in Armenia, serving as the administrative center of Shirak Province in the northwestern part of the country. By the end of the 19th century, when the city was known as Alexandropol,it became the largest city of Russian-ruled Eastern Armenia with a population above that of Yerevan. The city became renowned as a cultural hub, while also carrying significance as a major center of Russian troops during Russo-Turkish wars of the 19th century.
The city underwent a tumultuous period during and after World War I. While Russian forces withdrew from the South Caucasus due to the October Revolution, the city became host to large numbers of Armenian refugees fleeing the Armenian Genocide, in particular hosting 22,000 orphaned children in around 170 orphanage buildings. It was renamed Leninakan during the Soviet period and became a major industrial and textile center in Soviet Armenia. The city's population rapidly grew to above 200,000 prior to the 1988 Spitak earthquake, when it was devastated, with the city's population being reduced to 121,976 as of the 2011 census. The city was renamed Gyumri under modern independent Armenia soon after the breakup of the Soviet Union, and post-earthquake reconstruction efforts continue.
Today, Gyumri continues to grapple with the lasting effects of the 1988 earthquake, but remains known as the cultural hub of Armenia due to the many artists and craftsman who originated from the city. The city is also in particular notable for the large Kumayri historic district that managed to mostly survive the 1988 earthquake, dating back mainly to the 19th century and being one of the few surviving places in the world with authentic urban Armenian architecture.
Sev Berd or Black Fortress is an abandoned Russian imperial fortress in Gyumri, Shirak Province, Armenia. The fortress, which lies 8 kilometres from the Turkish border, was built in response to the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829. It is a national cultural heritage monument in Armenia.

One minute in Gyumri - Roads of Armenia
Holy Saviors Church
They say that once an armenian believer wasn’t allowed to enter the greek church. That’s how Gyumri people decided to build their own church. The highest church was the Greek Orthodox Church called “Urums” at that time. So people wanted to build a higher church that would stand between the Greek and Armenian Catholic churches and throw a shade on them.
It was constructed between 1858 and 1872. The design of the church was derived from the architecture of the Cathedral of Ani. However the Holy Saviors’ Church is much larger than the Cathedral of Ani. The architect was Tadeos Andikyan, a famous master of masters. At beginning of the 1930s, it was confiscated by the Soviet government and the belfry was destroyed in 1932. Later in 1964, the belfry was restored. However, during the Soviet rule, the church building was used as a museum, and later as a classical music concerts hall. During the 1988 devastating earthquake, the Church of the Holy Saviors’ was severely damaged and went through an entire renovation process since 2002. Currently, the renovation is at its final staged, but it is open to the visitors.

LAKE SEVAN | The Jewel of Armenia (Don't Miss This Amazing Place!)
If you come to Armenia YOU HAVE TO go to Lake Sevan! This is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the country and is the main body of water since Armenia is a landlocked country. It is only an hour drive from Yerevan so it is easy to do a day trip to the area or you can stay overnight at a hotel on the lake or a B&B in Sevan City. I would highly recommend trying some of the local seafood, chatting with the very friendly locals and just take in the beautiful mountain lake view. Hope you enjoy the video! xx

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads):
*I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.*
