Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, 🇩🇪 Germany, Tour 2022

#osnabrück a city in the German state of #lowersaxony . It is situated on the river Hase in a valley penned between the Wiehen Hills and the northern tip of the Teutoburg Forest. With a population of 168,145. Osnabrück is one of the four largest cities in Lower Saxony. The city is the centrepoint of the Osnabrück Land region as well as the District of Osnabrück.

The city of Osnabrück is connected by road to the A1, the A30 and the A33. It shares its airport with Münster.
The origin of the name Osnabrück is disputed. The suffix -brück suggests a bridge over or to something (from German Brücke = bridge) but the prefix Osna- is explained in at least two different ways: the traditional explanation is that today's name is a corruption of Ossenbrügge (westphalian meaning oxen bridge), which is etymologically and historically impossible, because the town is older than this corruption of consonants (documented in 13. century, Osnabrück was founded in 8. century), but others state that it is derived from the name of the Hase River which is arguably derived from Asen (Æsir), thus giving Osnabrück the meaning bridge to the gods, and previously Tacitus named people living near the grey river (Hase) Chasuarii. It may also be noted that Osnabrück is situated on the northern end of the Teutoburg Forest, which until the 19th century was known as the Osning. The way in which the city's name is pronounced can also serve as a means of telling if the speaker is a native of Osnabrück or a visitor: most locals stress the last syllable, while those from elsewhere tend to stress the first one.[citation needed] The city gave its name to the textile fabric of osnaburg.

Enschede lies in the eastern part of the Overijssel province and in the Twente region. It's the easternmost city in the Netherlands and lies a few kilometres from Germany, which borders the municipality. In the west, Hengelo is the first important place.
The world-famous Grolsch beer (the brewery founded in 1615) is brewed in Enschede. 😉 🍻

exploring bentheim Castle germany

Bentheim Castle is widely considered one of the oldest and most impressive castles in north-western Germany. Standing high over the valley on top of the mighty sandstone cliffs of the Bentheim Ridge, the castle towers over the small spa town. Bentheim is first mentioned in historical records in 1020. Walls that are five-and-a-half-metres thick and made of solid Bentheim sandstone protect the inhabitants against intruders. A branch of the noble family still lives in the castle, a large part of which is open to the general public all year.

History is still very much alive behind these walls in the knights’ hall, the powder tower and the torture chamber. Sandstone is the material that defines Bentheim, and nowhere is this more masterfully in evidence than in the Kronenburg wing, which was built in the Gothic style and features spacious chambers with historic furnishings, such as in the Ernst-August-Salon.
