Top 10 Places to Visit in Greece - Travel Guide
For many years, Greece has been consistently ranked as one of the most popular destinations in Europe. It features a rich history, numerous islands, luxurious beaches, ancient orthodox sanctuaries, fascinating scenery, and delicious Mediterranean cuisine. At the same time, every part of the country has so many distinctive aspects that you can explore it for years. In this video, we compiled a short summary of the ten most interesting places in Greece which should be visited at least once in a lifetime.
Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
1:18 - 10. The Saronic Islands
The Saronic Islands are the closest to Athens, so it's easy to get here even if your stay is limited to the capital. The largest island in the archipelago is Salamin, but Aegina, Poros, and Hydra are real travel attractors.
2:30 - 9. Chalkidiki Peninsula
Chalkidiki Peninsula, shaped like a trident, is primarily known for its extremely clean sea and well-maintained beaches. No wonder why, even in Greece, famous for its coasts, Chalkidiki firmly holds the leadership in the number of blue flags for the cleanliness, environmental friendliness, and quality infrastructure of the beaches.
3:53 - 8. Rhodes
Rhodes is one of the most popular Greek islands, and it is not only because of its natural beauty and abundance of resorts and beaches. Settled in Neolithic times, Rhodes was one of the famous centers of an ancient civilization.
5:03 - 7. Mykonos
The island of Mykonos belongs to the Cyclades group and is considered one of the most bohemian islands in the Mediterranean and the Greek Ibiza.
6:16 - 6. Peloponnese
The opening of the Corinth Canal in 1893 added an extra attraction to the Peloponnese, but also separated it from the mainland and turned it into a full-fledged island.
7:24 - 5. Corfu
Corfu, or as the Greeks call it, Kerkyra, is a real gem in the Ionian Sea. First of all, Corfu captivates with its green and rich vegetation, which can't be compared to the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands.
08:45 - 4. Athens
Hardly a dozen cities in the world can boast such an ancient, deep, and distinctive history as Athens. As early as the 5th century B.C., thanks to its powerful navy and advanced political structure, Athens became the most important center of the entire Mediterranean.
09:54 - 3. Kalambaka
The small Greek town of Kalambaka would most likely remain off the main tourist routes if there were not Meteora, one of Greece's most important natural and religious sights.
10:58 - 2. Crete
The largest and most populous of the Greek islands, Crete is a real state within a state, with its own history, culture and traditions.
12:21 - 1. Santorini
Greek islands are amazing in their diversity, but still Santorini has a special place among their incredible abundance. This tiny volcanic island has long ceased to be just a resort, becoming a real hallmark of the whole country.

Top 10 Greece Cities By Population
Greece has a rich and diverse population history that spans thousands of years. Here's an overview of the population history of Greece:
Ancient Greece (8th century BCE to 4th century CE):
During ancient times, Greece was home to several city-states, such as Athens, Sparta, Corinth, and Thebes. The population of ancient Greece varied over time, but estimates suggest that it ranged from about 1 million to 3 million people. The Greek population was largely composed of Greeks, with various dialects and city-state affiliations. Slavery was also prevalent during this period, with a significant number of enslaved individuals serving in various capacities.
Byzantine Empire (4th century CE to 15th century CE):
Following the decline of the Western Roman Empire, Greece became part of the Byzantine Empire, which was the continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire. The population of Greece during this period fluctuated due to factors such as wars, invasions, and epidemics. The Byzantine Empire saw an influx of Slavic and other non-Greek populations, particularly in the northern regions of Greece. However, the majority of the population remained Greek-speaking.
Ottoman Empire (15th century CE to 19th century CE):
In the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire conquered Greece, marking the beginning of nearly four centuries of Ottoman rule. During this time, the population of Greece experienced significant changes. The Ottomans practiced a system known as the devshirme, where they recruited Christian boys to be trained as soldiers or administrators for the empire. As a result, there was a conversion of some Greeks to Islam, while others remained Christian. The population also suffered from conflicts, forced migrations, and epidemics.
Greek War of Independence (1821-1832):
The Greek War of Independence marked the beginning of Greece's modern history and its emergence as an independent nation. The war resulted in the establishment of the modern Greek state. Following independence, Greece underwent a period of population growth due to factors such as the repatriation of Greeks from other regions, natural growth, and immigration from neighboring countries.
20th and 21st Centuries:
In the 20th century, Greece experienced various geopolitical changes and events that influenced its population. These included World War I, the Greco-Turkish War, World War II, and the Greek Civil War. These conflicts led to significant population displacements, migrations, and loss of life. After World War II, Greece saw a period of rapid urbanization and industrialization, leading to increased migration from rural areas to urban centers.
In recent decades, Greece has experienced some demographic challenges, including a declining birth rate and emigration. Economic factors and the European debt crisis have contributed to emigration, with many young Greeks seeking opportunities abroad. However, Greece continues to be a popular destination for migrants from other countries, particularly from the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa.
It's important to note that the population figures provided in this response are estimates and can vary depending on different sources and historical periods.
