South Ockendon Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Essex, and around 20 miles east of central London, is the town of South Ockendon (N.B. in some instances, including local signage, it is referred to as a village, although with a population of over 22,000, this would make it arguably the largest village in the country).

Geographically, South Ockendon is situated just outside the M25 and a mile south of North Ockendon, which is the easternmost part of London. Its name is derived from Old English for 'Wocca's hill', where Wocca was a Saxon leader.

At the heart of the town is the Church of St Nicholas. This dates all the way back to the 12th century, with a round tower from the 13th century (unfortunately obscured with scaffolding during this walk). The church is Grade I listed. Just across the green is the Royal Oak - a pub which dates back to the 15th century, or possibly earlier.

In 1892 the railway arrived in South Ockendon courtesy of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. Trains from the station, known as Ockendon, reach Fenchurch Street in the City of London in around 30 minutes, and Southend-on-Sea in around 45 minutes.

From the late 1940s, South Ockendon grew significantly as part of the effort to rehouse those whose homes had been destroyed during the Blitz. As such, many prefabricated houses were installed, although these were later demolished and replaced with a council estate made of concrete in the '60s.

Famous people from South Ockendon include darts referee Russ Bray.

Industry along the Thames includes a Unilever chilled distribution centre for all its chilled food products including Flora, Bertolli, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, Stork, Peperami and AdeZ. A Procter & Gamble (originally Hedley's) plant manufactures detergents and soaps.

The large coal-burning West Thurrock Power Station closed in 1993, and was replaced by a plant making industrial chemicals, particularly the raw materials for detergent manufacture. The 190 metre tall electricity pylons of 400 kV Thames Crossing, the tallest electricity pylons in the UK, remain. Just upstream of the pylons the tunnel of High Speed 1 passes under the Thames.

West Thurrock was formerly the site of a large chalk quarrying and cement making industry, today represented only by the works of Lafarge below the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. A new plant for the production of aluminous cement was completed in 2003.

West Thurrock is the location of the Lakeside Shopping Centre.
The parish church (now redundant) was used for the funeral in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral. Belmont Castle, England, a neo-Gothic mansion, was built in West Thurrock in 1795 but was demolished in 1943 to make way for a chalk quarry. Thurrock is a Saxon name meaning the bottom of a ship. West Thurrock is one of three Thurrocks, the others being Little Thurrock and Grays Thurrock.

The 347 London's Least Frequent Bus

Out in East London in the Borough of Havering is a bus that only runs four times a day - a total of 24 times in a week. It heads across the Greater London boundary into Essex ... but where does it go? And who uses it? It's time to ride London's Least Frequent Bus Route!

Note - This doesn't include the 6xx School Buses or the 969 Mobility Service ( At somepoint, I will go and ride and make a video on the 969! )

The Mike Harris excellent Bus Map is here:

The TfL Consulation of the future of Route 347 is here :

Ockendon Station 6/6/22

Ockendon Station is located on the C2C network between London Fenchurch Street and Grays via Upminster,

The station is managed by C2C and like all the stations outside the London Travel Zone on their network only sees services by C2C call here using at the time of filming Class 357 Electric Multiple Units,

Brand new Class 720's Electric Multiple Units were on order at the time with these being introduced to the network at the end of 2022 to strengthen the pre-existing rolling stock allocations.

Services on the C2C network operate several times a hour in each direction throughout the day with services starting/terminating at London Fenchurch Street

Services head out of the capital to the Essex coast with services terminating at different locations including: Southend Central, Grays and Shoeburyness;

SOON TO END: Passing Harrow & Wealdstone on the Slow Line

#shorts From December 2022, All Trains on the Slow Line will stop at Harrow & Wealdstone, increasing London Northwestern Railway services from 4 to 8tph existing Southern, London Overground and Bakerloo Line services. There will be the odd Train that passes on the Slow Line and on Sunday's but it will be a lot less frequent from December.

Greater Anglia vs C2C, London to Southend and back - which commute is better?

Join me on a day out to the seaside, in particular Southend on Sea on England’s South East coast.

There are two routes serving Southend from London , one from Liverpool Street with Greater Anglia to Southend Victoria and from Fenchurch Street to Southend Central with C2C.

Which one is better?
