Villa de Santiago de los Caballeros de Somoto Grande or simply Somoto (from Nahuatl : Xomotepek 'On the hill of the geese' ) is a municipality and a city in the Republic of Nicaragua , head of the department of Madriz . It is located on the Pan-American Highway at a Honduran border crossing at El Espino.
Being one of the most welcoming cities in the country, it is called Flor del Henequén due to its cultivation in the hills that surround it, Oasis of Peace , in times of the Sandinista insurrection and currently Capital of Friendship. or City of Donkeys ; given the affection that has traditionally been shown to these noble animals and so much so that the local football and ball teams display it in their emblems.
The city of Somoto has 51 communities, among which the towns of Uniles, Cacaulí, Sonís and Icalupe, among others, stand out.
Toponymy
Its original name, Xomotepek , means Goose Valley or Goose Hill.
The xomotl were birds whose plumage was used to make headdresses and clothing worn by the main indigenous people of the region.
The name of the town was modified, from Tepesonate , Tepesomoto until the colonial era when it was named, through royal decrees, with the title of Villa de Santiago de los Caballeros de Somoto Grande. And today it is known as Somoto.
Somoto is today the head of the department of Madriz, after it was split or separated from the department of Nueva Segovia , or Partido de Segovia, to form the departments of Madriz and Nueva Segovia. Leaving the city of Somoto as the head of the department of Madriz, with 9 municipalities and the city of Ocotal as the head of the department of Nueva Segovia.

Here is a glimpse of our short stay in lovely Nicaragua!We spent most of our time in the luxurious Guacalito de la Isla to visit family. We also spent a weekend together in Granada where we got to hike an active volcano! Everyday we enjoyed waking up to the tunes of the tropical birds and saying goodnight to our howler monkey neighbours. Each evening the skies would be filled with the most gorgeous sunsets and incredible hues!
