S1 – Ep 256 – Somerset West – Taking a Drive to a Few of our Favourite Places!
We love to spend time at the Helderberg Nature Reserve where we can enjoy the peace and quiet. There are beautiful hikes to be done here, even an eight-hour one to the top of the Helderberg Mountain which I have done a few times, Our next stop was the Lourensford Market which was spectacular as usual. We bought some beef shawarmas and they we great. Afterwards I did a quick walkthrough at the Erinvale Hotel and Spa which is another classy place and one we visit very seldom, but it's always great when we do. To top it off, we visited the Cheetah Outreach in Paardevlei. They do fantastic work here and it was great to see the wildlife in fantastic shape and so well being taken care of. Eastern Cape - South Africa
The Eastern Cape is known to be South Africa’s second largest province following the Northern Cape as the largest. The capital of the province is Bhisho. This province is one of natural beauty and diversity unmatched in another province. The Eastern Cape moves from the desert-like Great Karoo to the lush forests of the Wild Coast and the Keiskamma Valley, on to the Langkloof Valley.
Home to a number of renowned tertiary education establishments like Rhodes University, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the Walter Sisulu University of Technology, the Eastern Cape is a proud student supporter. Transport in and out of the Eastern Cape is not a problem as there is a good road system and there are airports at Bhisho, East London, Mthatha and Port Elizabeth, along with two major harbours in East London and Port Elizabeth.
The Langkloof Valley has large deciduous fruit growing communities while the arid Karoo is known for its sheep farming. Port Elizabeth is the largest city within the province and an important harbour. The city is also home to many sporting events throughout the year and a popular holiday spot.
The majority of the economy in the Eastern Cape is centered around manufacturing primarily automotive, with it being the hub of South Africa’s motor industry.

S1 – Ep 185 – Hofmeyr – A Pretty Town close to the Bamboes Mountains!
Hofmeyr is yet another pretty Eastern Cape Karoo town which we enjoyed visiting. This town is very close to the Bamboes Mountain Range and its original name was Maraisburg and later renamed after Jan Hofmeyr. While driving around we found the Anglo Boer War Memorial in the park as well as the Great Trek centenary celebratory pyramid which was in the same park in the centre of town. Then it was time for us to leave this beautiful town and find our accommodation at Waterlea-on-River Tented Cabins about 35km from Hofmeyr. What an amazing stay we had, on the river in a fancy tent! S1 – Ep 184 – Steynsburg – Surrounded by Mountains and Hills in the Eastern Cape’s Karoo!
The hills and mountains as you approach Steynsburg are amazing. When we entered we could see that it was surrounded by them. This small town is located in the Eastern Cape’s Karoo and we love the Karoo. After filling up with fuel, we made sure to find the train station. The station building must have been a grand old building in its day but it is not in use anymore and is not in good shape. We then took a drive to the Town Hall and found it also not to be functioning anymore. The churches seemed to be in good condition except for one which looked totally abandoned. The caravan park was another spot we were very keen on visiting but it too was sadly not open for business anymore. I was happy to see that the local authority is working on the roads and improving them. Despite the town in some need of serious attention and upliftment, it was a very interesting visit to Steynsburg. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #steynsburg #easterncape #karoo #mountains

Somerset West is a town in the Western Cape, South Africa. Organisationally and administratively it is included in the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality as a suburb in the Helderberg area, about 50 kilometres east of Cape Town central city area, and bordering on Strand.
South Africa – Into the Wild!
Joseph heads back to his first African adventure when he safaris through South Africa for close encounters with its animals and people. His journey begins in Cape Town, South Africa’s mother city, so called because it’s the country’s oldest city. Then in the shadow of the city’s landmark Table Mountain, he visits South Africa’s oldest wine country and samples some of South Africa’s finest wines. While we can expect to find lions and elephants on Joseph’s African journey, at the Cape of Good Hope Joseph also introduces us to ostriches and a colony of three thousand African Penguins.
The climax of the episode is Joseph’s safari at Shamwari Game Reserve, a 61,000 acre preserve. Surrounded by the multitude of Shamwari’s amazing animal residents is as inspiring as his experience Alicedale, an abandoned rail town on the edge of the reserve. There he learns that sustainable tourism, attracted by the reserve, has given the people new hope. Joseph’s South African journey teaches us that although predators kill by instinct, people choose whether to attack or embrace each other and choice is what makes us human and allows us to celebrate our connection.
